Some interesting points. Nice to move the debate beyond vague demands that we get more press coverage somehow to the specifics on where sports coverage is these days. Those suggestions seem eminently doable

Predictions for the future -

Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG

Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

What is suggested isn't difficult to achieve either. Will a Wood respond?

Nope, he thinks Brian Batty still reports for the Daily Mail and wonders why he hasn't had a phone call from him.

It absolutely isn't difficult. I used to write similar articles with photos when at Newcaslte University in 2000-2002 for our RL side. I'd send them to a point of contact at the Chronicle (plus another paper) and they'd be published. We worked this out over 15 years ago; why hasn't a sporting governing body?

The fact this article has been written speaks for itself.

Its not the failing its the not bothering that winds me up.

We don't have any credible advocacy in the game at the moment.

BARLA is not what it was and the Parliamentary group is turning into just a nice photo opportunity.

The guy who wrote the article should be part of a working group looking at resolving issues we have.

Supporters Direct are trying to work with the RFL in creating a fans group.

I honestly believe they offer the best hope for the game to get some advocacy back in the game.

Yep. I have books full of articles from the Derby Telegraph when they published just about everything I sent them. Previews, shirt presentations, match reports etc. etc.

Just establish a relationship and they will oblige.

Everything mentioned there makes complete sense and is easy to achieve. In fact the RFL could go a lot further than that to help boost their coverage.

Providing previews, match reports, access to players, video highlights or cut up inventory, media lists, etc are all things that can make a significant difference between a story being run or not and thus increasing coverage of the sport.

Make sure games end earlier

I don't think, these days, it matters how early matches finish. When the papers can be bothered, they will cover sporting events that finish later. This isn't the era of metal type-setting, after all, so that excuse has been obsolete for at least two decades. Papers update their printed issues as the day goes on, and their websites get updates even more often. But they still keep using the excuse, while running stories on other sporting events that finish at the same time or even later.

Give us pictures

I don't know if the RFL or the clubs supply pictures or not. Can somebody verify this, one way or the other?

Take the County Championship’s lead

This is the Cricket County Championship that struggles to attract more than a handful of supporters? We should follow their lead?

And I'd really like to hear from both a local and a national paper about how many press releases they actually do get from RL (either the RFL or individual clubs), because the main complaint I hear is furious people shouting that the RFL don't do anything at all. But the same people say that every week about every aspect of the sport's administration, so it isn't the most convincing argument.

All common sense stuff also. Pretty sure in the past the RFL, or people within the organisation (sic), have done similar things before.

I seem to recall Dave Lawrenson writing a number of articles for sport magazine here in London, which were clearly done because Sport mag were never going to do it themselves.

If a newspaper won't cover your game, the next step is clearly to provide them with content. Maybe this has slipped in the last few years, who knows.

But as has been said, all the comments from Matt Butler are very easily achieved. KO times might meet a bit of opposition from SKY and some fans, but it's not a huge stretch.

I recall reading an article by a sports journo about his first NFL game here in London, and how at the end of every quarter all the sports journos in attendance were given a written summary of the quarter along with detailed stats of key players. That always struck me as such an easy and extremely helpful thing to do, and what a pity RL didn't do something similar.

I tend to agree with this.

Also, how do we know that the RFL dont already bombard the various media outlets with reports and picttures etc?

The real Mick Gledhill is what you see on here, a Bradford fan ........, but deep down knows that Bradford are just not good enough to challenge the likes of Leeds & St Helens.
