Championship Shield - Round 4 Predictions

Three out of the four games on Monday will have a bearing on the relegation dog fight.  The objective for each club will be to win their home game; any away wins will undoubtedly throw a cat amongst the pigeons,

Oldham v Sheffield

Lots of ingredients in this game to suggest an intriguing encounter where Oldham return to action after the Odsal horror show.  We've beaten the Eagles home and away this season so completing the treble is possible and in doing so we could secure our Championship status for next season.  If results elsewhere go our way, come 4.45pm on Monday we can all relax and start thinking about 2017.

Sheffield have well-publicised off the field problems and although they started the Shield games well they lost at home to Swinton last week.  Maybe that loss will elicit an improved performance but I get the feeling that Oldham will have a greater hunger for the points.

Whitehaven v Halifax

Hapless Halifax are in a bit of a rut and they find themselves making the long journey up to Cumbria searching for their first win in the Super 8s.  Whitehaven beat neighbours Workington last week to draw level at the foot of the table.  They'll be looking to build on that victory, beat Fax and then potentially close the gap on Oldham and Swinton.

Should Fax win, Haven fans will be looking at scores elsewhere because the spectre of relegation might finally become a reality.

Dewsbury v Bradford

Bradford have nothing to play for and Dewsbury are more or less safe so who knows what will happen here.  A Bradford win would keep alive Oldham's hopes of a semi-final place and after last week's demolition job at Odsal you'd have to tip the Bulls to win again.  If they do, Oldham could find themselves playing Dewsbury on the last day of the Shield games with the victor winning the right to play Bradford away in the semi-final.  What a lovely prospect.

We are however in the silly season and nothing would surprise me.  I'd do a big eye-roll if the Rams pull off a victory.

Swinton v Workington

Swinton bounced back from the Oldham loss by going to Sheffield and winning last week.  Workington will be gutted after losing at home to Whitehaven and even the loyal Worky fans are now accepting their fate.  I expect Swinton to do themselves and Oldham a favour by winning.
