Half man half grapefruit
Please tell me that I am not alone in thinking that our kicking for touch by LP or SR from penalties leaves a lot to be desired. Surely it is a skill that can be improved if enough time and effort is invested in it. I would have thought that anything to gain precious yards and conserving energy would be worth pursuing. I know that going for distance increases the chance of not finding touch, but it must surely be something that it would be worth the risk, after all, the greater the risk, the greater the reward. Indeed,a great exponent of this art,Jarrod Sammut, showed how it should be done at Derwent Park recently. It may be worth exploring the place kick option, popular a few years ago,but seldom,if ever seen now. I remember our own David Hobbs employing this tactic successfully in the eighties. If we try to improve several aspects of our game by just 1%,the overall improvement could be the difference between survival and possible obscurity. fiftiesremembered
Mick Parish was also capable of some cracking touch finders. I quite agree with the above, although I think also that the touch judges too often just stand still after guessing where the ball is going out. eclecticsheep
I mentioned this some time ago...let the ball do the work when we have the opportunity, its the smart option and we will have to be smart in every aspect of the game to survive in the Championship. Hobbses penelty kicks were something to behold.Often they would hang in the air and look like they weren't going to find touch.

Fred Hall could kick a blinder for touch , just look at the Sheffield video on the "Sunday Match " posting on how NOT to kick for touch
Monk
Agree. Can't understand why we don't make the most of these opportunities. It leaves me baffled.
clifford
Mick Burke had a boot on him, and Doris Platt could kick as well Martin Strett was decent kicker but he did come from Orrell RU, but his game management wasn't the best
eclecticsheep
I still remember all the restart possession we thrived on with Big Adrian Alexander leaping like a salmon on the RU style restarts...as for Big Mick...One game just the one when someone got his dander up and he played like a world beater but my he could kick, as could the other mick (Nanyn). Roughyedz
Another poor display as far as kicking for touch is concerned today in the first half against Sheffield. No comment about kicking down the throat of the full back !!!!
Pigeon Lofter
Johnny Blair was the best kicker I remember, both from hand and place kicking. As a fullback he didn't get much play as Martin Murphy was the regular choice. This of course from the mid seventies, the last time I was in Oldham. Phil Larder was the place kicker and Frank Foster the touch finder and drop kick guy...but I always felt it should have been the other way round.Ian Holland took over the kicking duties at some point but he wasn't the same standard as JB. I heard John Blair died a few years ago.....well before his three score and ten.
BOLTON ROUGHYED
Totally agree. Very frustrating when you see the ball go out and over the top of the stand but only actually go about 10 yards forward. What's with that?
thinboyfatter
I find it even more frustrating BR when I see the touch judge running 5 to 10 yards back towards the kicker regularly. That really does tell a story.
