It's an absolute disgrace that Scotland are in the 4 nations!

Recommended Posts

Even in Serbia there is more grass roots activity.

I honestly cannot believe that even by RL'S standards it can be so catastrophically wrong.

- No games being played in Scotland but in Hull and Cumbria (seriously???)

- No warm up games before they take on the number one team in the world (yep that's gonna go well)

- Not a single pr/launch event in Scotland

- Absolutely no media coverage in Scotland whatsoever

- No local youth teams in Scotland

- Not even any league clubs

- No future planning to develop the sport or even capitalise on the coverage they might get

- Scotland Rugby League governing body almost non existent

Surely at the very minimum when teams are put forward to qualify for such a high profile event it's considered whether they can actually play home games in their own country??

Serbia, Spain and Czech Republic are doing better for the game than Scotland.

Where would Scotland be without :

A. English heritage players

B. Aussie heritage players ?

If any of those teams qualified for a World Cup heritage players would be selected

Every country who plays RL has selected players based on heritage or residency at some point. The problem won't go away until the rules are changed

I think it's more of a disgrace that Wales and France allowed Scotland to win in the qualifying tournament.

France should be a lot better than recent results, the same for Wales

1. I don't think France or Wales allowed Scotland to win.

2. 90% of professional rugby league clubs are Australian or English.

3. All the Scottish team are English or Australian.

4. There is one professional top level French team.

5. All the French team are French.

6. There is no top-level professional Welsh team.

I agree that the rules need to be changed. I think in some ways it is a bit like licensing. In theory qualification for the four nations is the right thing to do. But in reality it may be better if there was simply a play-off between Wales, France, PNG and Fiji?

3. You might need to research this before posting.

5. France have used the residency rule previously.

1. They had the opportunity to beat Scotlsnd and qualify themselves. They both messed up in the tournament

2. Not sure if point. Are you saying there should only be two international teams?

3. No they're not. There are Scottish born players in the team

4. One SL plus plenty in Elite one - which a lot of the current squad are drawn from. Not sure what this point is either

5. Clint Greenshields was selected by France not so long ago

6. No top teams. But plenty of Welsh still playing in SL due to previous incarnations of Crusaders. If that club was ran a bit better if have expected more players

7. Eligibility - agreed

8. Playoffs. Idea was to have a 4th nation from the hemisphere in question. Previously teams were slotted in in the northern hemisphere. For this you among they organised a meaningful qualifying tournament for the top ranked European clubs and Scotland won it

Couldn't agree more but they qualified fair and square by beating the French and welsh. I think we've just got to hold our collective breath and get Scotland's participation in this years 4nations out of the way and make sure that this embarrassing episode never happens again.

Jared Taylor, James Wynne, John Wilson and Clint Greenshields. 4. In 10 years. Through residency. And none as of today.

If France continue to lose meaningful games. Who's to say they won't do it again

England are just as guilty. As to are Australia & New Zealand

All four countries should have no need for residency or heritage players with the playing pools at their disposal

Sorry but you're wrong. Scotland never beat France to qualify for the 4 nations.

France choked against Ireland then beat Wales 42 - 22 and Scotland 22-38. We did not qualify because of point difference.

You're quite right and I should have said Scotland topped the group.

They'll need to score more next time then.

It's not a disgrace at all that shortly Scotland are in this comp. The disgrace is not taking advantage of it.

Maybe we'll select Louis Anderson on residency if he wants to.

Though, if Scotland needed to select players through residency, there would be no Scotland team right now.

The disgrace is that the Scotland Federation is unable to capitalize on the 4 Nations to even build something. It's basically a shot for nothing. IMO the best option for the comp would be Fiji. Fiji in the 4N, Fiji team in NSW cup, at long term a Fiji team in the NRL. But that can only be possible with decent eligibility rules.

All that I was highlighting was that every country takes advantage of eligibility rules. It's not just a Scotland problem

If I was French is be much more concerned with the lack of meaningful results at international level than who another country picks to represent them.

If memory serves me right. They had a chance to qualify in the Southern Hemisphere comp. but Samoa won that right.

Any decent Fijians just end up getting picked up by Australia anyway

That's what I'm disappointed with. I do think it's a mutual problem with the organisers as Scotland we adamant that they wanted a "home" fixture. But for whatever reason they couldn't secure one

Probably because they've not had a home ground up there - that is a disgrace

It seems Workington is their home ground for now. This is just bonkers

you dont have to make stuff up to make your list longer.

There has been media coverage and there will be more at the time. There have been a couple of events round edinburgh this week with sponsors and at the castle.

Thankfully the RFL sold the rights to 2 of 3 Scotland games to Premier for 5000 people to watch.

These two issues are one and the same. We struggle at international level because we have to grow our players and most other nations don't.

You're right. This is the problem. Australia should not get first choice on players, this would ensure stronger Pacific Nations as top Pacific players would not have the right to switch allegiance.

whilst I agree that Scotland's inclusion in the 4 Nations is disgraceful, to me, it has nothing to do with local participation and nor should it.

To me, the disgrace has to do with the fact, Scotland qualified for a 2016 competition in 2014 when 2 yrs has passed and more recent results should have determined the qualifier.

As for the rest of the OP's reasoning...

Devils Advocate time. If Iceland's football team decided to play RL tomorrow and were good enough to beat opposing nations and qualify for the World Cup, should they not be because there is no local domestic league?

No. If your national team is good enough, then they deserve to play.

The problem I think we all agree is with the administration and in turn eligibility.

In case anyone cares, MatchPoint is an international Sports Hospitality organisation that has financially supported the Scottish national RL team.

The Scottish born, raised and resident Director has no concern for local RL participation.

He is the Director of a successful international company that has invested in the knowledge Scotland RL are competitive and can compete at the highest level.

Just in case anyone thought local participation is the be all and end all...
