Wakefield - The Club with 9 Lives

Recommended Posts

Must be a great time to be a Wakefield fan at the moment. Warrington and Wigan beaten at home and up into 6th place. Five points clear of the bottom four.

Since their promotion in 1998, a few things I remember...

Pearman spell - financial meltdown

Close relegation shaves (including last day wins over Salford and Castleford)

Surviving two rounds of licensing (second one where they seemed doomed)

Cash problems in recent years - with the Windows guy in charge

Close shave in the MPG last year

Shocking start to 2016

Yet they keep bouncing back and fighting back. Wakefield's fans have been through pretty much everything but they have never been relegated in the SL era.

It looks like they could be mixing it in the top 8 come the split too. Credit to everyone at that club - ultimate survivors.

Waste of a SL place in my opinion, wont ever be anymore than a 4-6k fan club even when winning and will remain in a sh*t hole of a ground for ever more! Still, good on them for their results in last two months.

Had the RFL not effectively stymied the Gang of Three's takeover of the club - the takeover the latter clearly were sure was to be approved, once the club had voted for the RFL's proposed structure etc changes - then Wakefield not Bradford would surely be playing in the Championship now. Worst possible timing for Bradford, best possible timing for Wakefield. I hope all Wakefield fans have Wood on their Christmas Card list?

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wise people so full of doubts.

Bury your memories; bury your friends. Leave it alone for a year or two.  Till the stories grow hazy, and the legends come true.  Then do it again - some things never end.

I sort of like Wakey but the fact that they are still here is indicative of the problem with RL. No way should perrenial stragglers on and off the pitch have survived for so long but they've been saved by others circumstances. And the promise ofa new ground in 1998....what on earth was that about? Clearly BS

Oh deary me!!!

We've been a 4 - 6k fans club (7-10 now and again) playing in a ###### ground serviving crisis after crisis for 40years. Imaging a well run Wakefield ( we're getting there) playing at a decent stadium (I reckon sooner than later) get this the club will grow bigger and fanbase will be fine.

Wakefield Trinity

Love this club

Love this City

If Bradford are such a massive club they will bounce straight back then won't they?

Last round of licensing. Wakey have only survived due to others incompetence not because they bring anything to the table. That makes it sound like I have something against them, which I don't at all...it's just that they have been very lucky.

It's confusing tough isn't it, Trin survived because they were the best option but but but..

So even though Wakey where told they where not the worst application you think you know better. Never assume.

To be honest, as a Rovers fan I'm amazed Chester is doing so well, but let's be honest here, this is Brian Smiths team, and all he's doing is giving his players the freedom to play.

Everything seems pretty rosy for Wakefield fans right now, but give it time, and the chance for Chester to have a pre season and build his own team, and I can see him fluffing it up.

Even after all these decent results, I still don't rate Chesters coaching ability.

Glad I made your day with your new favourite post.  But, please don't misunderstand me: I am jealous of no other club.  But I AM bitter - very bitter.  You are quite right.  But not bitter with Trinity.  When faced with potential oblivion themselves, I suspect any other club would have raided our players and done the other things they did. I am bitter with the various buffoons involved in the ownership of Bradford who brought financial crises upon the club; and at Wood and the rest of his cabal at the RFL, whose actions ensured the final crisis became a complete disaster.

Summary:

Trinity have stayed in Super League since 1999 because they are lucky.

Fair enough.

Susprised you consider Bradford a "Massive Club"?  Always had you down as being sensible.  I never said or suggested they were, and certainly in recent years showed little sign of so being, but maybe you are aware of something I am not?

Relegation from SL deprives a club of so much income - central and local - and so much cap space (or at least it did in the year it mattered most) that the only way back for a relegated cub IMO is if they are either wealthy or have a wealthy owner, and either a SL club goes into meltdown or they get really lucky.  This crazy system, and the income/cap gulf between the two divisions, makes "bouncing straight back" an almost impossible task otherwise.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wise people so full of doubts.

You wrongly  assume they survive through skill and judgement rather than luck & circumstance......

Hence you get the Bulls fans going.

Both city clubs can easily be bracketed with the Wigan, Wire, Saints Hull and Leeds of this world and in the past have.

All Wakey and Bulls have done wrong is not to have dropped lucky on the sort of councils who have helped other clubs get new grounds, or dropped lucky on a rich man wanting to chuck money at them.

The game needs both clubs in SL and thriving, both could bring so much to the table.
