Another Daft sounding name for a cracking ground.I mean, how Daft does crown oil arena sound?.I don't think fans of either club will adopt this new Mickey mouse name,it will always be Spotland in my eyes. For the record I hope ourselves and Swinton stay up and Hornet's join us in the championship next season. Then we can renew hostilities and have the good banter between us again. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Sadly it's not about how a name sounds, it's all about money, money, money.

I'm basically with you on this. Comfort can be taken from the usual way a ground's name is given such as, "Rochdale Hornets play at Spotland Stadium which for sponsorship purposes is known as the 'ABC Stadium'."

Point though, is where does it all end? Some sporting clubs will almost literally sell their very souls (if they had one) as nothing appears to be sacred these days.

Playing strips: I've seen matches (SL) on telly where the players have a sponsor's name on the back of their shorts, i.e. their a*s*s.

Back in the 'good old days' we were all more than happy to see adverts (for that is what they are when all is said and done) on the stadiums' stands, pitch side walls etc. Money does play a big part in sport, but sometimes it certainly appears to be going just too far for some of us.

Not the first change of name historically.  Originally it was St Clements field I think and then Willbutts Lane for many years.  Spotland stadium only took root after the renovations started in the late 1980s.  Would have been a joke to call the tip it was in the 1970s  a 'stadium'.

I remember Hornets playing there in the Challenge Cup. We had our noses in front in the second half but it was really close game. Huddersfield put the ball to ground right on our try line in the right hand corner. Our right centre ( a guy called John Hughes who we got from Bramley I think ) picked the ball up, broke away and set off for the opposing try line. The cover was coming across so he set out for the opposite corner. Right where me and my pal were standing. He was weaving from side to side to avoid the chasing pack.

It was raining that day so just as the chasers caught him he threw himself forward and slid in by the corner flag. I don't think I've seen anyone run further to score a try ever.

He was shattered when he finally got there.

That try saw us over the line in a really tight encounter.

remember tht game well. We were struggling at the foot of division 1 and huddersfield were running away wth Div 2 and really fancied their chances. Some of the local knuckleheads put the window thru on the Ellen Smiths supporters bus and it was a cold February trip back over the tops..

Those knuckleheads will either be in boxes or on sticks now, let's go over and get our revenge. Ha Ha Ha
