Doncaster Rugby League are thrilled to announce that Sam Doherty has today committed his future to the club.

Doherty initially joined the club back in 2014 after spells at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Central Queensland Capras.

The 22 year-old impressed in his debut season with six tries in the Kingstone Press Championship, going on to become a first team regular under head coach Gary Thornton.

The centre made 19 appearances for the Dons in 2016 scoring ten tries, including a first professional hat-trick against London Skolars back in June.

Doherty becomes the second Dons player this week to pen a two year deal, following in the footsteps of full-back Tom Carr.

A delighted Doherty said: "I'm really pleased to have sorted my future with Doncaster for the next two years.

"Carl Hall really sold me the vision of Club Doncaster and his plans over the next five years which I am very excited about and pleased to be involved with.

"I've really enjoyed my time at Doncaster so far and I'm pleased to be rewarded with a new contract for my performances over the last two seasons.

"Still being a young player I have aspirations of playing in Super League one day and I really believe this can be achieved with Doncaster.

"We have to forget about last season now and focus on the future, we want to go above and beyond what we achieved this season and ultimately get back to the Championship as soon as possible."

Chief executive Carl Hall added: "I have every confidence that Sam will become a Super League player in the future.

"He has shown so much potential and promise over the past two years and he will only continue to improve.

"It is great to see Sam really buying into our future plans and it is great that he believes he can reach Super League with Doncaster."
