Wintergreen

Do you remember the olden days (as my kids are apt to call anything before 1990) when we played rugby through the winter,  when you got the almighty whiff of wintergreen as the team ran out onto the pitch.

Thighs were liberally slathered in it to ward off the cold (and probably a sneaky way to reduce grip during tackles too :D)

I was chatting to someone on sunday, and we were saying you dont smell it much these days....I had been trying to describe the smell to my kids during a convo about winter rugby.

For me, i only have to smell it and it takes me back to the heady days of the 80's, when widnes were good, and i would stand in naughton park, with my dad and my uncles, as they watched the likes of mick burke, stewart wright, keith 'chiefy' elwell, andy gregory and the mylers do their stuff :)

Lovely stuff - a smell of pure nostalgia.

Wikipedia tells us that 1 fluid ounce of the oil is the equivalent of over 170 aspirin tablets.

Probably banned by now by the Health & Safety police, Geneva Convention or some such...

I was trying, and failing to describe it to my kids....vicks was the nearest thing i could liken it to, but its nowhere near that.

Germolene probably the nearest thing nowadays.
