Match Thread. Whitehaven v Featherstone Rovers Saturday 7th May 2016

Recommended Posts

It's Move-on-from-last-Sunday's-disappointment-Wednesday today.

This'll be a big test for Rovers. I don't like the phrase but it looks like a "must win" game.

Danny Craven and Andy Ellis should be back.

Hopefully Tim Spears too.

Noises that Colton Roche is not too far away.

And within a few weeks Briggs too.

Updates on Turner, Channing, Milner and Day would be handy too.

Craven and Ellis should make a big difference, and having Danny back should improve the tactical kicking. Rovers have been losing out in this department in the last few weeks, although Ridyard and Brambani are the best in this league. Grant Gore is not far behind though, and there is a worry that opposing kickers are starting to target a perceived weakness under the high ball, either out wide or at re-starts. I hope they stand up to the test if it comes, because the line defence is conceding very few tries from ball in hand moves. Maybe its not a perceived weakness, but because the defence is that good that opposing sides are trying to go round them with kicks rather than through them with ball in hand?

So according to this.....

http://www.pontefractandcastlefordexpress.co.uk/sport/featherstone-rovers/rovers-set-to-welcome-back-four-players-1-7893108

Ellis, Craven, Roche and Spears all back.

Which leaves Briggs, Channing, Turner and Milner in the sick bay.

Oh and Baldy is in the Leeds 19 but I assume he'll be water man again so can play for Fev on Saturday.......

Jon Sharp might have to deal with something new this weekend - having to choose between fit players. Interesting to see what he does with Hardman/Abdul/Craven. Seems unfair to move Hardman from full back given how well he has played there, but there's a case for saying to field our best 13 available this weekend you'd play Craven at 1, Hardman in the centres and Abdull at 6. I guess the alternative is to use Craven as an interchange for Ellis with Tagg or Blockley in the centres again.

Also some decisions to be made in the pack. Looks like Griffin, Davies, Bostock, Baldwinson, Roche, Spears, Cording, Ormondroyd, Spears, Ellis, Snitch and Tagg (assuming he's not picked at centre) might all be available, which means 12 players fighting for 6 starting spots plus four bench places, and that's without including the likes of Cooper and Coventry.

Yes.

My temptation would be to leave Hardo at FB, which puts Tagg at centre, ABdull and Thacks in the halves and Ellis and Craven on AHB interchange.

That leaves 10 big lads for 8 places in the pack and on the bench. Griffin, Davies, Bostock, Baldwinson, Roche, Spears, Cording, Ormondroyd, Spears, Snitch.

And Blockley, Coops and Covo won't make the 19 which is harsh, especially on Cooper apparently (I haven't seen the Oldham match yet) but there you go.

When Briggs & Turner are back we won't need Foster & Abdull and Channing will let Tagg back into the pack.

Looks better than it did last week, but we have to bring home the bacon.

Craven at 1. Hardman at centre in place of Tagg. Don't reckon he is fast enough for the three quarters. At last something approaching a first choice team. A good performance with a win and then lets roll forward. The replacements have played their hearts out. A big thanks to them and hope they have good futures. Bring back some form of reserves so they can get some game time.

Briggs a pleasant surprise in the 19. "He’s trained well this week and is looking forward to getting back onto the pitch." Snitch not in the squad, which I think is fair enough, there is a lot of competition in the back row.

Strong squad that.........fingers crossed for no more injuries and i fancy us for a good run of victories  UTR!!!

Is the D/R arrangement with Hunslet still in place? The Hawks are struggling this season, and if Fev get no more injuries there will be some good players in need of a game, especially with no reserve side.

There's always the possibility that Briggs won't play a full game in his first match back, in which case Craven or Abdul could start at 6. Craven will probably play the full game as primary kicker though, even if he plays full back or hooker at some stage.

thanks feath. from a roughyed from a bad day iam enjoying my whiskey now

Should be proud of your team. Oldham are exceeding anything that was expected of them. As for Fev they got a few bodies back today. There are no easy games in the championship.

Who scored today and did we play well? 22 is a high score conceded but 44 is a good score for us. Is our mode of operations changing or is the newish team (loaned players plus returning players from injury) still settling in?
