I don't think Scotland will win it. OZ v NZ in the final. I haven't seen anything in SL this year to convince me that England will be any better than usual.

Reasonable view.

We have several players in the Forwards doing ok in the NRL.

Our Backs are the issue as always, especially the halves.

I agree with you.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

I agree that some of the Brits in NRL have been outstanding this year but will they have the same impact surrounded by 10 SL players? Where's the Leilua/Rapana duo to cash in on Whitehead's work? Sam Burgess is balanced out by Taumalolo for the Kiwis and maybe Papalii for the 'Roos. If Shaun Johnson keeps his head in the game, where's England's answer? Where's England's tactical kicking game to match JT, Cronk and Smith?

Still no announcement. Normally players are announced after the last round. Perhaps Mal doesn't intend to pick anyone from the bottom 8 teams. No Semi? No Aaron Woods? GI has already been named as captain of the PM's XIII to play PNG so I guess he's in.

One paranoid theory is that Mal is just going to pick the Qld Origin team anyway so, with the Storm, Cows and Broncos still playing, there's no need to name anyone. He'll have to name someone because the PNG game is on GF weekend - what happens if the Cows play the Storm in the GF?

Pretty good team that.

They might need to rethink the PM's XIII game. Now that the State Championship - Q Cup winner v NSW Cup winner - is played as the curtain-raiser to the NRL GF, there is a possibility that the PNG Hunters might be playing in Sydney on the same weekend that the PNG National team plays the PM's XIII.

Even worse, and fairly likely, given the performances of the Hunters, they could be involved in the Q Cup finals well into September most years. This game probably needs to be rescheduled from next year on.

Is that official?  Did Kata make the switch from Tonga? Rapana deserves a look.

Dunno about Kata but I hope not. English fans will go crazy if he gets "stolen" by NZ. Oh, hang on, it's not Australia "stealing" players so it doesn't matter.

Meanwhile, Matt Moylan has been added as 18th man to the AUS PM's XIII to play PNG.

Coach: Mal Meninga

Mal has also named a train-on squad. I assume he isn't considering anyone from the bottom 10 teams apart from those playing PNG.

Trent Merrin (Penrith Panthers)

Corey Oates (Brisbane Broncos)

Anthony Milford (Brisbane Broncos)

Ben Hunt (Brisbane Broncos)

Matt Gillett (Brisbane Broncos)

Adam Blair

Panthers

James Fisher Harris (I guess we should call him JFH)

Suaia Matagi

Ben Matulino has withdrawn to have surgery and Jazz Tevaga has been included.

KANGAROOS 24 MAN SQUAD: Cameron Smith ©, Darius Boyd, Shannon Boyd, Boyd Cordner, Cooper Cronk, Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson, Jake Friend, Tyson Frizell, Matt Gillett, Valentine Holmes, Greg Inglis, David Klemmer, James Maloney, Josh Mansour, Trent Merrin, Michael Morgan, Matt Moylan, Justin O’Neill, Josh Papalii, Matt Scott, Sam Thaiday, Johnathan Thurston, Aaron Woods.

Andrew Fifita and Semi Radradra were not considered for selection, with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg starting the announcement by outlining the reasons, with the continuing investigation into Fifita’s relationship with one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge and Radradra’s looming hearing into domestic assault charges precluding them from selection.

Interesting statement from Greenberg especially considering that Ferguson and Dugan are hardly role models.

And since their selection is, in my opinion, unwarranted, it would have been the perfect excuse to dump them.

Same goes for Holmes actually. I thought he was suspended from rep selection for a whole year following an incident with the Queensland Emerging squad. I know that breaking curfew is nothing compared to groping a woman, but still...

Greenberg's has rather blurred standards.

Kiwis are shot in the key position of the Halves.

Australia seem weaker in the backs than they have been in recent memory.

We are weak in the Halves, Centres, Wing and Fullback. (backs in general)

Looks like anyone's win.

Australia IMO.

matching Fusitu'a, Manu Ma'u, and Solomone Kata all having played for other countries prior to New Zealand. In the case of Fusitu'a and Kata, only 5 months ago.
