Liam Welham spoke to the official website following Sunday’s 54-14 victory against Oxford in Kingstone Press League 1.

Welham came off the interchange bench to score a hat-trick in the match, scoring with his very first touch of the ball.

Doncaster climbed to second in the division with the victory and Welham was pleased to secure the two points.

“It was a good win, we went into the game under no illusions, we have been winning games but not comfortably,” said Welham.

“Our main aim was to minimise their points because a lot of other teams have been turning teams like Oxford over and not conceding many.

“We knew we could score from anywhere on the field if we shifted the ball and the execution was right, but the emphasis was on defence.

“Everyone loves getting the win and the bonuses that go with that.

“The buzz is massive, you can see the disappointment for those who aren’t playing, but there is always a reason for playing or not playing.

“Morale is very good, we all get behind each other and it is proving positive and helping us to get the wins.

“We had an emphasis at the beginning of pre-season, everyone wants promotion and we are very capable of doing that, but we have just had to knock ourselves down a peg or two.

“You can’t drop down a league and expect it to be easy, it is very  tough, if not tougher because the guys are a bit more heavier and lethargic and don’t go where you want them to go.

“Being second is a massive boost confidence wise, once you are up there you tend to stay up there, we have the leisure of teams trying to scalp us and that is a good feeling.”

Welham admitted he felt fortunate to score three tries in the game and admitted he is enjoying the challenge of playing in the second row.

He said: “One of them was just being right place right time, my first two carries resulted in two tries so anyone would be happy with that.

“There is competition for all positions across all the pitch and I hadn’t been playing my best, Gary rang me and dropped me for that week with the right reason.

“We’ve had a number of injuries and I’ve been in the second row and it is a challenge I have thrived on.

“It’s only one step in from the centre, it is more physically demanding, but proof is that when I get the ball I still believe I have that inkling from last season.”

The Dons now have a weekend off before heading to Toulouse on Saturday 4th June and Welham had mixed emotions about having no game.

“If you ask any player, most hate having a weekend off and personally I hate not being at rugby,” Welham added.

“Hopefully the rest will do us good with the amount of injuries we have though and we will get back into training to be on our a-game for when we head to Toulouse.”
