  1. At a loose end tonight, I decided to sit through an episode of 'Splash!', ITV's primetime Saturday night celebrity diving contest. I've witnessed the decline of television quality over the last decade or so, and have managed to rationalise my anger towards drivel such as The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent with the thought that ; 'People derive enjoyment from this rubbish, at the end of the day, they're not harming anyone, are they? Let them get on with it.' This show, however, plumbs the very depths of 'entertainment' - right from the embarrassing hosts to the pathetic, worthless, deluded and self-important 'celebrity' contestants. I've now arrived at the conclusion that, if TV bosses continue to scrape the very bottom of the barrel that is reality tv - in their attempts to squeeze every last scenario and context from its rotting corpse, then we're genuinely going to reach the stage where a show similar in nature to 'The Running Man' - as seen in the popular but overplayed movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is the only possibility left on the table. And you know what? People will absolutely lap it up.
  2. Apparently Danny Dyer debuted in Eastenders yesterday. Horrifying as may sound, he'll probably be the best actor in that show by some distance.
  3. On the contrary, I think they really harboured ambitions of taking the crown this season - especially given the fact they've totally re-invested the colossal Bale transfer fee plus a 20 million or so extra. AVB is a bit of a fraud IMHO, and hugely lucky to find himself a candidate for the jobs. What's he ever done in the game apart from win the UEFA Cup with Porto in his first season? Whilst that's an achievement, it's not particularly a massive endorsement of his pedigree/quality. I can guarantee he'll walk into another high profile job though, regardless of his failings. Eventually clubs might realise that, despite the fact he speaks in riddles and is Portugese, he's not Jose Mourinho II.
  4. Odd combination. A guy who's been a bit of a renegade and maverick throughout his career and an apparently megalomaniac chairman with an ego the size of Africa. I'm sure everything will go smoothly.
  5. It would have been an absolute FARCE if they'd have won by virtue of that FARCICAL video referee decision.
  6. Good news for them. They must be paying some good wonga down in South Yorkshire, I bet most SL clubs would be interested in signing him.
  7. The P&R system actually allowed Huddersfield to build on the momentum and winning mentality that a season in the lower league had nurtured. It also allowed them to root out the on field dross that had repeatedly failed them and blood young players like Eorl Crabtree who are now bedrocks of the club. By not being relegated on the numerous occasions when they had finished hooelessly bottom, a losing mentality had flourished that in turn held the club back.
  8. Its not beyond possibility that, with the promise of a top flight club and the revenue it would bring, a Championship club wouldn't attract the backing of a major investor. After all, before Mr Davy appeared on the scene Huddersfield had struggled both on and off the field for years. Without his influence, they'd quite possibly be still stuck in the lower divisons struggling to attract crowds of 1000 as they did before his arrival.
  9. This is excellent news for a large number of Championship and Championship 1 clubs, who - given the opportunity, have the potential to grow and develop if able to gain access to the top flight. Yes, I'm aware that promotion and relegation wasn't always successful in the past - especially in terms of clubs overreaching themselves financially, but these days we have salary caps and parachute payments to guard against that. As opposed to catapulting virgin clubs into SL and ultimately setting them up to fail, this might allow sides like Gloucester and Crusaders to initially find their natural level - i.e. the level at which they are best able to cope in relation to crowd figures and income. If they were to reach SL in four or five years time via the promotion system, they'd be established entities who are able to build upon a presumably solid base - as opposed to starting from a position where they have to grow at a ridiculous rate just to stay afloat.
