Batley and Fev's success

Recommended Posts

Article on Serious About Rugby League about the success of Batley and Fev, and how it gives hope to fellow part-time clubs in the Championship - http://seriousaboutrl.com/championship/batley-and-fev-give-hope-to-fellow-part-time-clubs

I travelled to the Big Fellas yesterday for the match. Amazing atmosphere and the most complete performance I've seen by a team in quite some time. Best of luck in the Qualifiers, do the Championship proud!

Usually in Sunderland, sometimes in Sheffield.

Write for a few rugby league websites, mainly about the Kingstone Press Championship.

What does this mean for the other part-time clubs in the Championship?

That is the question. IMO all it means is each year 1 or maybe 2 part time teams are in with a shot of getting 4 games against the giants from SL. This will reduce from next year onwards with the inclusion this year of Toulouse and then the following year with Toronto making the Championship. The question really should be, how can the part time teams like Fev, Fax, Batley etc push on and actually mount a realistic challenge for promotion?

The new format is a nice novelty but the teams that were trapped under the old franchise system still seem nowhere nearer getting in to SL with even Leigh despite DB throwing money down the pan at them and still looking short of of enough quality to make SL.

Aw..I'm almost feeling sorry for Fax fans. Still trying to have a subtle dig. Pathetic under the circumstances. Anyway please stop now referring to Fev and Batley as if we're in the same league as Fax cos you must have missed that we've now gone up a tier. Before you say we'll be back with you next year I already know that we probably will. However we will have considerably more money than you and the idea is that we then use it wisely to build. (Something that ALL last years top 4 did not do - in different ways). Having a great coach and team spirit helps as well. Enjoy the shield.

Apart from anything else, the current format means there's always a chance of big games and big days. I know for our chairman SL is always going to be the holy grail but from a fans' point of view the Championship as it is now and as it is likely to be next year and the year after is more exciting even than the days when we topped the league - in those days there were only about 3 opponents each year where the game had a "bigtime" feel to it whereas with the addition of London and Bradford reaching the top 4 feels like a real achievement, with the bonus of 4 cracks at SL opposition too.

The Sheffield home win to top the league in 2013 was tremendously exciting, but apart from that and the 2011 grand final, when I look back on the Powell era I still think about the Cas cup game more than the four league leaders' shields. It might be very tough for a Championship team to get in SL these day, but not only is it at least a theoretical possible, but also the Championship itself is a much more interesting competition in itself now.

Mind you, I can't lie, I'd have been gutted for us to be in the Shield.

Can anybody tell me how much we get for finishing in the top four? Plus is there anything else to pick up money wise?

A minimum of £450,000 central funding next year (more if we do better than finish bottom).

Plus some mega gates, Pat Cluskey on Radio Rhino just now reckoned about £250,000 just from the three home games.

And the subsequent game v Wigan.  Ok we lost, but we went down fighting and gave a good account of ourselves.

No dig there, was a serious question regarding the future of teams like ours.

As regards spending money from last season, Im totally fine with what we did, results on the field may not have been good but off the field we are now in as strong a position as we have ever been as a club in this division. I revert back to my question though, despite all that how does a club like Halifax kick on and challenge for SL without a big money backer. IMO the RFL has to have a plan to filter more money down to this league to give that a chance of happening.

Mmm...whether it was a point or a dig, funny how it was made when it was. Until now weren't we all talking about how exciting the season had been and that this format was creating a better competition etc. Butnext you'll be trying to convince us (and yourself) that Fax missing out was all part of coach-of-the-year Marshall's plans.

It was made in response to an article saying that Fev and Batleys success gives hope to other part time teams. Im questioning what that hope is for us part time teams? A day in the sun against the big boys or a realistic chance of promotion. Im really not sure reading my posts back on this topic where the actual dig at Fev is.

Well I'm just enjoying it we got players fit. And played well at the right time of the season. We now got some well supported S/L clubs coming to POR and the money from that alone will help the club The the blue ox said we picked the wrong coach and we didn't have top four players let's hope we keep JS and have a similar hard working group of players next year again and prove some people wrong Star names don't win matches hard working players and a good coach does

I think Kear will just pip JS for coach of the season, unless you reach the million pound game or better, but he has steadied the ship at Fev and done a great job imo

You should enjoy it, your team performed brilliantly especially when the pressure was on. My opinion is on the bigger picture rather than short term as I do think it is great that we have a chance to play the SL teams and it is a nice change but I think things can be done to help teams with no big money backer to get closer to SL.

I said exactly the same, we had no hope of promotion but it was a nice 'day in the sun'.

As it happens it looks like its a blessing for Fev as they get another winding up order and the flip side is Bradford miss out and are expected to go in to administration in the next 48 hours. Is it over spending, is it mismanagement either way something seems fundamentally wrong with the game.

Its all about managing your funds and expectations we as a club have always tried our history proves that we consistantly punch above our weight in terms of size catchment area etc when you compare us to fax bulls leigh  etc there should be no comparison, if those  teams got it right and had the support of there public   i can go back as far as when we lost paul newlove and replaced him with andy currior bad decision granted but still shows the ambition of the club at the time to succeed

the difference now is we are growing steady with a crop of good lads at the heart of it  and if we can manage the funds wisely which i believe we will  then i can see us being a step in front of fax bulls sheffield etc i didnt say leigh cos they are going down the ###### or bust route by the looks and paying people sky high wages no matter not a route i want to see my club down

but steady growth year upon year will do it cant be easy for bradford and fax fans in particular stomaching our success particuarly as we stopped you lot in your tracks i wont forget the gloating of fax fans at blackpool in a long time ....how sweet it is to be having the last laugh  im sure you will beat us now and again in the future but unfortunatly you will never be better

For me the new structure is simply a way of making the game more exciting without providing any real opportunity for P&R...........we're basically in the same scenario as Licensing but at least the competition is better and there's more exciting games.

The only real way anyone is going up is if an existing SL side has a total financial meltdown and goes bust..........There's no way the SL sides would vote in a P&R system that isn't heavily stacked in their favour.

Teams like Fev and Fax need to wait for a financial backer or have a miracle season..........Teams like Leigh need to wait for someone like Wakefield to have a complete meltdown and go to the wall.

A grim reality if you really want promotion but still miles better than the Licensing era.

Rugby is a funny old game, we used to say that about Bradford, then we used to say that about Huddersfield, then we used to say that about Leigh. Ive learnt in 35 years of watching Fax that nothing is set in stone and you should enjoy the good times because poorer times are just around the corner.

Oxy one of my mates who played for FAX rang me at work one Friday afternoon.Did i want to play for FAX  A at Keighley because they were struggling to raise a full team £2.50 win or lose.I declined as Friday night's i went out on the p-ss and then to Wakey Mecca. You may have had me playing for you.

Agree totally. Even when Wakefield looked like one of the worst teams in SL history(Get your Fax digs in....) no championship team could still manage to get promoted and in chasing that dream Bradford look close to going to the wall again. Saying that though god knows how they can not manage on the crowds they get and it just shows how much money really needs to be pumped in to clubs to even get close. I wonder how long Beaumont will keep dipping before calling it a day? Then with Toulouse in next year and Toronto the following year there is even more pressure on Leigh.

I think the RFL needs to start filtering some of their profit they make year on year down to teams in the lower leagues to try and bring the overall standard of the competition up.
