What a sad day not just for Hornets but for Rugby League in general.

Wayne has announced his playing days retirement.

A massive thank you Wayne for everything you did for us. It was a privelage knowing you not just as a player, but as a true friend.

So sorry to see that Wayne has retired as he has been our backbone of this club with his rock solid defence coupled with the ease that he pouches the high bombs, even under pressure. He has also been a great leader from the back and has linked up well in attack,he's certainly been up with the best in art of fullback play.

Good luck in his retirement and hope that he still plays some part in Hornets future.

RUGBY LEAGUE WITHOUT ROCHDALE HORNETS IS LIKE AN UNSHARPENED PENCIL, THERES NO POINT?

Sorry to hear that Wayne has decided to retire. A stalwart of not only Hornets but Swinton as well. I will miss seeing that safe pair of hands under the high bomb mate, I wish you and your lovely family all the best and hope we still see you up at the Chip Fat Arena.

Best Wishes Mate.

I couldn't agree more. A sad day but he's going out on a high note. What a great player he's been for Hornets and Swinton. Never took a backward step for either club and always led from the front.

Safe as houses under the high ball, a master of the last ditch tackle, a quick and elusive runner in attack.

Thanks for the memories Wayne, especially that try in the Play Off Final against the old enemy.

All the best for the future.

A proper home town hero was Wayno.

We've had a fair few good local lads in my time (from about 1987 onwards) but I cant honestly remember many better or more consistent than him. The ultimate professional and an even better bloke in real life and a superb ambassador for the town and Hornets.

It says a lot about a player when all the opposition fans you come across regularly mention him in glowing terms.

To be honest I just don't know how we let him slip through the net and join Swinton first! But never mind, to be thought of as a legend at 2 clubs is something very special.

Lets not lose this bloke now to retirement, if there isn't room at Hornets for him then I'm sure Mayfield will benefit greatly from his experience, and at the right level there's still more than a couple of seasons left in him.

All the best Captain Fantastic its been emotional. :clapping:
