Sentient robots?

Recommended Posts

Some roboticists think we could have self aware robots in 20-25 years.

Thoughts on this? Should they have rights? What if they decide biological life is a plague to be destroyed? What if any religion could they develop? What does it mean for us?

When the Robogeddon happens, 90% of TRL members will blame the RFL.

I recently listened to a discussion on this. Most people involved apparently aren't worried about a Terminator style situation but one where they become so advanced in comparison to us that we become to them like pond life to them and therefore of little importance.

They were talking about the idea that they could reach a point where they are able to improve themselves and once this happens we would see a sudden explosion in their capability, like something that would take us years in a matter of seconds.

As for their rights, it was suggested that once they are human like and people are able to use them for purposes of company then human attitudes to them will change significantly even if they are not conscious. If they are able to pass the Turing test then people will feel very uncomfortable chucking them in the skip when the next best model comes along.

That's how some of the blokes on here treat women, never mind robots.  ;)

Assume these won't be made by Apple then?....or will they come with a built in obsolescence....until they figure out how to upgrade themselves.

on topic slightly. I think if these driverless cars happen (scares me a lot does this) then anything is possible :notme:

I don't think its a case of IF more like WHEN.

There's only really 2 things that's holding them back at the moment;

1 - Any sort of ruling on their legal position in terms of liability.

2 - Cyber security (in that the cars can be hacked and someone else can take control)

While the technology isn't yet infallible (as demonstrated by Tesla suffering their 1st fatality a month ago when their car failed to recognise a trailer and changed lanes) they still make far fewer errors than us humans.

As a civil engineering professional in the transportation sector I've attended several industry conferences and debates on future technology including driverless cars. There are several school's of thought at the moment, ones who want to see people just replace their own cars with driverless and others who want to see all personal cars disappear and for the country to just have a fleet of 'on demand' cars that you summon by your phone and they just pick you up & drop you off as & when you need them.

Personally I can't see the personal car being replaced in my lifetime but I certainly think driverless cars will be seen on our roads within 10 years.

The other key technology that's going to grow massively is electric cars. Highways England had planned to convert a section of the M1 to 'continuous charging' but recently scrapped the plans due to the disruption. Instead the TRL (Transport Research Lab) are building a huge test track and are planning to run electric cars continuously to test the technologies reliability. Its only the range limitations that's holding back electric cars at the moment but if there's continuous charging available on nearly every road then it makes their range unlimited and does away with the roadside charging points where you have to wait for hours to recharge your car.

I'm looking forward to future retirement with my driverless electric car and personal robot to do all the household chores (not as a replacement for the missus before anyone asks !)

By the year 2000, we'll all be eating food in a pill and a robot will do your vaccuming. Obviously we'll travel using jet packs and wear weird silver suits.

I miss those sort of prediction.

We have the robot vacuums and food as a drink which is close enough!

And we all walk around with communication devices.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Or, to quote John Prine:

We are living in the future
I'll tell you how I know
I read it in the paper
Fifteen years ago

We're all driving rocket ships
And talking with our minds
And wearing turquoise jewelry
And standing in soup lines

Don't need driverless cars for this - it's already possible today.
