The NRL Rookie - TV Show

Recommended Posts

Havent seen anyting posted on here about this, a friend switched me on to it yesterday.. sounds like it could be an interesting programme.

Especially with the possibility of an international flavour to it. Always thought something like this could have been a good thing for the RFL to gain some exposure and unearth an unknown somewhere in the UK.. I guess it would follow a similar format to the UFC's TUF show.

Sounds a little like the London Broncos' Prop Idol idea from a few years ago.

Yeah I remember that, didn't some guy from Bristol win that?

The AFL has been running this format for a couple of years. I think a UKer would have a chance because it would add value to the potential audience for the show.

If you search YouTube for NRL rookie there are quite a few applications on there.

I didn't watch all of them but I couldn't find any from Europe. Except for one US chap they all seem to be from Oceania..

From the rules: "they must not have played NSW Cup, Queensland Cup or Holden Cup Under 20s over the past three seasons."

This means to me that foreigners would have a fairly good chance of making the first group of ? I can't find any reference to the number they will start with. 12? 16? I imagine the show will run for 10-12 weeks and they'll kick 1 off the island every week.

i reckon theres a very good chance a couple at least will come from overseas.. its a TV show after all, and the presence of a few people from overseas would add a bit of variety to the show.. and we know how much the NRL love an underdog story.. you can picture Phil Gould interviewing a teary eyed wannabe NRL star now!

It's a pity Obed Karwhin has already played for Wests Tigers 20s because he would have been a perfect story. Born in Ivory Coast. Family left because of the civil war, walked all across the country to a refugee camp in Liberia. Then the family migrated to OZ when he was 8. Almost made for TV.

looks like it has the makings of a show worth checking out. Entry from obvious places nsw, qld, nt, wa, nz, png. fiji etc but really interesting applications from people who actually play the game in vanuatu, serbia, canada, usa, jamaica, wales, south africa...

Hope a couple of international players get picked help raise awareness in Australia, NZ that rugby league is actually a world sport at amateur level played in 30+ countries. Also going to help sales of the show internationally with international representation.

like to see Simon Lomaloma from nz get a shot at NRL after playing for Wellington, NZ Universities and being named NZRL local player of the year in 2013 but has somehow missed out on NRL at 27 this would be his last shot at NRL pro career... if you haven't already check this accountants highlights reel out

The guy from PNG looks massive - a lot bigger than the usual PNG players - I assume he is Australian-bred or something?  PNG could definitely do with some bigger guys in their national squad - they were badly outsized by the Fijians a few weeks ago - they seem to be a nation of short people. (Probably due to poverty).

It would be good if Premier Sports could screen this show, I wouldn't mind watching it.

Maybe the could drop the tedious "Inside Broncos" shows to make room?

If this could be picked up in the US what with the huge numbers of college football players that didn't make the draft it could be huge, for both RL in the USA and RL in general.

If the producers have any sense they'll pick one of the US applicants, if there were any.

I've seen a video of a Aussie or NZ island guy who went to study in the US and an African American guy who must play in the US league who said he trained and played against the Leeds rhinos in Florida.

Again I still think this could be huge if marketed towards the states and the large college football player pool, maybe even get Russell Crowe involved.

Thee AFL had two international applicants in their show - an Irisman and an American (or maybe Canadian? Can't remember).

The Irish guy, who had never played the game before, did really well and made it to the final three....he didn't win but did get picked up by Carlton, which was great.

I really enjoyed the AFL show....it was quite an interesting insight.....So very much looking forward to 'our' version :-)
