Massive boost for womens Rugby League

Recommended Posts

They are hoping quite a few will be paid within 3 to 5 years if it grows as planned.

If the money becomes decent it could attract players from all over the world. Can't be too many pro or semi pro rugby comps of either code for women in the world.

All encouraging but the 3-5 years sounds a fob off. The NRL could pay match fees for representing the Jilaroos now if they wanted to. Even if it was $500 per game. They only play around 4-5 games a year. Hardly going to break the bank and would be a massive boost for the Aussie women good enough for international level.

This is from 2014:

THESE are the girls who will create rugby league history on Sunday afternoon by becoming the first women to be paid for playing in a Test match.

A mixture of mums, hairdressers, teachers, firefighters and police who will proudly wear the green and gold of Australia against the Kiwi Ferns in the curtain-raiser to the Kangaroos versus Samoa Four Nations match.

In a small breakthrough for the increasing number of women playing the game (registrations are up 30 per cent this year), the girls will be paid $500 each when they run on to WIN Stadium in Wollongong under the coaching of former Bulldogs hardman Steve Folkes.

That's great news. Then the story should have been "more women to get paid in next 3-5 years" . The article hardly helps itself when the sevens and women's union and women's cricket juggernaut is moving at a much faster pace.

We've seen this guy before, but I don't think he was ready for what he watched this time...
