http://news.sky.com/story/1640927/independent-newspaper-set-to-close-in-march

It was only going to be a matter of time..........can't say I'm disappointed, I've grown up in the digital age and have rarely bought a newspaper. Plus they've done naff all to support TGG

It was the Independent who printed Mike Calvin's hateful and uncommissioned hatchet-job on RL a couple of years ago. I hope he's one of the redundancies.

Sadly, it will probably be the likes of Dave Hadfield who get their marching orders instead.

Thought he was on a consultancy basis now anyway?

Hadfield went over a year ago. At least I will no longer have to wade through pages of smug fawning from Hewitt to find the 2 column inches of the latest Rugby misdemeanor.

Isn't he freelancing now? His stuff does still appear in the Indie every now and then.

National newspapers have not been a good financial investment for sometime.  I concluded the reason they are worth something to people is that they give the owners a mouth piece.

So you don't agree with  EveIyn Beatrice Hall, "I  do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

In any case, the Mail on line get something like 200 million monthly unique browsers with an  average daily unique browser figure of about 12 million.

The Independent has had a hand to mouth existence most of its life, with several refinancings to stave of closure. Getting rid of expensive printing and distribution should turn things round, though and I trust it works out.

Who's next? Guardian News and Mediareported a loss of £30.9 million for the year to the end of April 2013. I think that is now close to £50 million

2015 circulation figures

The Sun 1,788, 866 (-0.92% month on month/-7.39% year on year)
Daily Mail 1,587,986 (-0.36%/-4.36%)
Metro 1,345,358 ( +0.09%/-0.08%)
London Evening Standard 900,264 (-0.03%/2.95)
Daily Mirror 825,829 (-1.89%/-10.04%)
The Daily Telegraph 480,730 (1.21%/-2.72%)
Daily Star 450,045 (4.17%/2.68%)
The Times 407,566 (3.38%/4.74%)
Daily Express 403,343 (-1.92%/-11.75%)
i 273,961 (-0.25%/-2.83%)
Financial Times 205,695 (-1.64%/-4.09%)
The Guardian 165,672 (-0.77%/-6.88%)
The Independent 56,005 (-0.89%/-7.82%)

of couse, it might be that several million people might be right....

Not possible, John. My sister-in-law reads the Mail, therefore the Mail is utter tosh!

I read the mail at least a couple of times each week. It helps me maintain my sense of outrage against the small minded middle class plus it's a damn good laugh.

the on line version is our equivalent of The National Enquirer. maybe we should run a forum poll. Should the Mail be closed down?

Online version is hugely popular.  World wide not just the UK.

Other newspapers have been left behind.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

It's a bit sad but I guess somewhat inevitable.

I used to enjoy buying the occasional Sunday paper and then spending the next few days working my way through all the supplements, sub-sections and magazines that came with it.

I do enjoy visiting the Daily Mail and it's sister web-site the Daily Mash. It's a shame the Mash doesn't publish the same volume of comical stories as the Mail, but then I guess it employs a high class of writer which no doubt costs more.

The Mail saw the opportunity and committed funds and staff to making it work. That's sort of admirable.

The whole "all grown up" thing they are so fond of with celebs' kids, however, is paedo-creepy and very much in stalker territory.

Isn't the Mail published by the same people who own London's Evening Standard, and Metro
