Cunningham - training in Dubai? A disgrace!

Recommended Posts

Cunningham and any other coach who objects should have their coach grading reduced. It should be part of the qualification for coaching at the highest level that you sign up to International Rugby comes first.

The way Cunningham is carrying on it is like Bennett is stealing his players for the first 10 rounds of the season.

It is 12 days the players are gone for and it's not like they are not going to be working on their fitness or skills in that time either.

Cunningham's comments that if Bennett was an SL coach that he wouldn't do the Dubai camp is exactly why the England coaching role should never be an active SL coach.

The camp, whilst it won't turn the 18 SL players into superstars will at least see them each learn what they need to improve on in order to beat Australia and New Zealand. England is arguably only 1-2% away from beating both nations, and things like this plus the May Test may just be the difference.

I'm no fan of Cunningham, but he makes two very good points here:

"We all want a successful World Cup but I can guarantee you 12 days anywhere in the world in January isn’t going to make you win a World Cup in October or November. That’s not going to happen. ‘These 12 days in Dubai are going to change our competition, I believe.’ Those were Wayne Bennett’s words, all because they’re taking 18 players away for two weeks in the middle of January.”

Cunningham also claimed that Bennett does not care about the state of Super League – and added that if he was a coach for one of its clubs, he would be opposed to the Dubai plan himself. Cunningham said: “At the minute it seems like he doesn’t care about our competition, that’s how it feels. I’m absolutely sure this would not be allowed to happen in the NRL.

I think he's spot on.

He's spot on if you are a coach who couldn't care less about anything other than your own job because you have no faith in your own ability.

He said this wouldn't happen in the NRL. Don't players get picked for emerging Origin camps pre-season? Also Origin players are stood down from club fixtures the week before SOO.

Cunningham needs to realise that, while club football is Totally Wicked, International RL and England has to come first.

Bennett is taking the pee though. He insists on taking players half way round the world for 12 days but can't be arsed to stay there himself for the whole 12 days, deciding instead to put his club duties first.

Bit hypocritical don't you think?

No, unless you can tell us exactly what he has planned?

He's happy to disrupt clubs pre seasons by taking players for 12 days in the name of international development but he won't disrupt his own clubs pre season for 12 days by being there himself for the whole time.

as i said in my earlier post omg international rugby the clubs need to make room for more international commitments and easiest way is expand the squads. however the international money needs to be recycled back into the game in a virtuous circle.

not a fan of Cunningham in the slightest, but taking players out of a key pre-season period is a pretty big thing.

Discussion about whether it is the right thing to do does not mean you dont want to support the international game.

Sorry Dave I disagree, the national coach should always have the last say, he will be proven right or wrong by his results and suffer the consequences being wrong.

International rugby must always be top of the agenda, SL coaches should butt out.

as long as we play about with it and dont have central contracts then SL coaches do have a say.

I suspect Bennett knows this isnt the prime camp time but it has to fit in with his Broncos duties.

I support more time in camp but late pre season seems a weird time to take players. That said, would they be happy to miss two games mid season?

England need every get together possible, the World Cup is the pinnacle, there is more to Rugby League than Super League.

The future is league likes all the above comments :clapping:

I totally agree with Cunningham, His job is to win games with St Helens and he is accountable to there season ticket holders & club bosses not Wayne Bennett & like it or not the England international side.

I fume every season when my club loss GI (So approx 1million dollars of our salary cap) to bloody SOO that I have zero interest in, I believe the opinions of many of you on hear are not that of the majority of paid up RL fans who value the success of there clubs above everything else and pay good money to them every year via season tickets.

I'm not at all anti Internationals but club RL is big business and the main reason many including myself follow the game so you cannot blame a man for taking issue with something that will affect his employer/ business.

I have no objection to gathering England players for a training camp, in fact all for it if it leads to England playing at their best.

What I do have a strong objection to is going to a country which imprisons people for the "crime" of organising rugby league.

That's the real question Dave,

So Kieron when is a good time for you?

Defending Steve M people, my how times have changed!

And that's what I mean Dave about every debate seeming to be a search for what's wrong, "There must be something and I'll find it, just give me a minute!"
