Heathrow airport expansion gets government approval

A decision not without consequence for the government. Zac Goldsmith has already confirmed he will resign and trigger a by-election to oppose it, and other Cabinet ministers are also opposed.

I'm not sure what real alternative the government - any government - would have to going ahead with Heathrow. Someone had to bite the bullet on it eventually.

Easy for me to say, I know, as I live 200 miles away from it.

Still subject to a vote in Parliament 'in 2017 or 2018' so it'll probably never happen anyway.

About time someone made a decision !

Personally I don't think its the right one as expansion at a single site is short sighted. I would have preferred just a runway extension at Heathrow in tandem with a 2nd runway at Gatwick. That would have provided greater capacity for longer and I'm sure would attract far less opposition (public and political).

It had to be done , it's been a football kicked about for the last 25 years. I'd read it was the first new runway built since the war. I thought thy might have said yes to second at Gatwick as well just to get it out of the way. Suppose to be open by 2025 let's see.

Disharmony in the ranks of the front bench already as the Transport Secretary says Heathrow decision right to "provide best trade links to world" while the Foreign Secretary says "Undeliverable".

Will he run as an independent?  Has name recognition, campaigns on being anti-runway, but is a tory so safe?

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

The Lib dems will go for the seat big time.  Its a strong remain area.

Wasn't a Lib Dem seat until 2010?

Yes until 2010 but he had a 20,000+ majority in 2015.

On the back of his anti-expansion ticket? Lib Dems will hit this place hard... if Goldsmith doesn't run as an independent, the Lib Dems will win it.

Voters will also have to consider that, however anti-expansion Goldsmith is, as an independent he'll have very little influence.

Goldsmith will stand as an independent and the Tories won't put up a candidate to oppose him. He'll then vote with the government on all but Heathrow and then no doubt quietly re-join the Tories at the next election. What a waste of a by-election that would be.

Goldsmith was a remainer too.

He's standing as an independent so either way this is a loss for the government because I doubt any candidate they put forward will win the seat given their backing for Heathrow!

May was between a rock and a hard place on this.  Businesses are hailing it as a wonderful decision; residents and green campaigners are saying it's the pits.  Personally, I would have given it to Gatwick but only because that would mean fewer residents impacted.  Gatwick has even worse supporting infrastructure than Heathrow.

I doubt it will pass through Parliament but even if it does, there are still many years to go of legal challenges and heaven knows what.  But at least a decision one way or the other has been made.  Of course Blair's government made the same decision and here we are now, still making the same decision but under a different government.

Plenty of support in parliament.  Even the SNP support it.

Err he wasn't.  He was a leaver.

70 odd % of the constituency were remain though.

People in this country have had enough of facts.

I think I read somewhere that China will have built sixty-odd new airports before a spade goes in the ground at Heathrow. Just shows.

Heathrow is already a pretty miserable place; can't help but feel for the poor sods who leave nearby.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Tories not putting a candidate forward.  So a vanity by election.

Some suggestions that Labour might not bother either.

I would laugh if Goldsmith lost.

Wherever a new runway was built it was always going to be controversial. Its the NIMBY brigade.

The infastructure is already in place like it is at Gatwick so in the future there will have to be another runway built, whether the politicians like if or not and its a must for business.

If you started from scratch, with big funds and no villages to upset, you wouldn't build it at Heathrow.  But that is a fantasy world.  They probably should build at both Heathrow and Gatwick.

Makes you wonder why anyone would have moved to the threatened area any time in the last 30 years. I'd have thought there was always a risk of expansion.

Just get on with it...and pay decent compensation.

With the exception of people who have been in their houses for 40+ years I have to admit I have little sympathy for people who buy properties close to an airport and then complain about aircraft noise. I get that people are upset about losing their homes but the expansion plans for Heathrow have been on the cards for decades so its hardly a shock to the people living in the potential development area.

The only caveat to that is I do find it a little unfair to the residents regarding night time noise. Most airports used to have flights that stopped around 10pm, now they come in until midnight and start again at 6am.

If the Government had any real vision they'd just go for this in a big way and allow the development of 4 runways at both Gatwick and Heathrow. Most of the big European airports already have 4 and Schipol has 6. Dubai is now the major world hub because it has 7 with a new complex due to open fully for passengers in the next few years with a capacity greater than Heathrow and able to handle over 2800 A380's a day.
