gordontrevor
Thank you for posting this. It will be appreciated by not only by Wigan Warriors fans but by all genuine rugby league fans. The guy was not only a brilliant player, and is a gentleman, and if had played the southern based union egg chasers, today he would have been Knighted. And yes i totally recognise that there are many others who played league, who are of the same status.

There's a line in there speculating on why Cardiff never came looking for such a prodigious talent that was on their doorstep. Can't see that going down too well at Twickers. “Few thought him even a starter. There were many who thought themselves smarter. But he ended PM, CH and OM. Padge
Story and brief video clip here. Incorrect about him being Rugby's top try-scorer, but otherwise good. To be fair it doesn't say top try scorer, it does however in the wording imply it. He is of course the top British try scorer. Bevan was Billy's hero and he has often stated that he thought Bevan was the best winger ever. To be fair to Jackson, the linked article is a decent summary of BB's career that doesn't exactly avoid the aspects of skin colour and boot money in RU and, in the sentence in question, he said he was the greatest try-scorer in either code. LionelHurst
Billy B - indelible memories created in the mind of a young public school boy who fell in love with the game in Warrington. I have so many wonderful recollections of going to matches with my father. For me Central Park and such places were cathedrals that have shaped my life. When dad used to say Boston & Ashton were in the Wigan side v the Primrose & Blue my heart sank a little! I always remembered when BB thundered along the touchline at Rochdale's famous Athletic Ground, collided with the touch judge and broke the latter's leg! But being held up as the greatest does not necessarily mean top in numbers. I would say Billy B was the greatest because of his armoury of means of scoring, he was also not just a winger having played in every position except the three front row ones. Seriously though, this thread is making me happily nostalgic. Having moved from the Bristol area to Lancashire, my first ever game seen live was Wigan -v- Featherstone in January, 1964. "Who should I look out for?" I asked my new school friend who took me to the game. "Boston" was the one word reply. Who scored the first try in Wigan's win? Boston...of course!
