I'm just watching the Premier Sports broadcast of the ANZAC Test, and the singers of both "God Defend New Zealand" and "Advance Australia Fair", screamed the last word or two of the anthems.

 

It's almost a norm these days, but in my opinion, it's 101% wrong.

 

National Anthems should be sung, and not screamed.

Couple of pub singers. Going up an octave for the end of an anthem is as cheesy as it gets. There have been culprits at the Challenge Cup Final in some years too.

 

Compare it to the choirs for Samoa v Tonga.

I like what the scots do at union internationals. A band gives a tempo for the crowd, then stop for the last part so just the crowd singing. The crowd singing is always better than a warbler

There is some inherent wish that a national anthems can act as a medium for conveying the passion of the gathered crowd but this is never fulfilled. Most tunes are pretty sombre. That's why the warblers get stuck in. The English national anthem is a dirge about subservience and about as relevant and full of spirit as singing Ralph McTell's Streets of London at wedding. 

We had the opportunity to change it for the RLWC 2013 but were slow on the uptake. Then  we saw the English commonwealth teams get in there with Jerusalem. A more tuneful dirge but not land of hope and glory which is still up for grabs for any forward thinking sport. We have dropped the Royals for the big games lets do it for their theme tune.

I think the craze started at the Superbowl when each "star" tried to out do the previous years effort.

It has got so bad that you can now bet on how long the anthem will last, or putting it another way, how long the diva can stretch out the final note.
