Interesting thread on Wakefield forum

Wakey are a club hanging on by a thread. Unless they have major investment they wont be finishing outside the bottom 4 in SL anytime soon and theres probably a good chance that if they get relegated they will go belly up. I would hate to be a Wakey fan, at least been a Hull or say Widnes fan you start the season with some optimism which is usually gone after a few games, Wakey do not even have that, what do they hope for? Finishing 3rd from bottom?

You have to admire them in a way, they have been hanging on to that thread for 18 years, and have looked certainties for the drop on umpteen occasions, but they are still there. On the other hand they haven't complied with stadium regulations, they are not as lucky as Fax regarding assistance from the council, because WMDC also has Cas and Fev. One day they might indeed go down and fold, but they have no assets and therefore nothing to lose. It wouldn't take long for them to re-form, ala Sheffield and Leigh, and work their way up to the same level as Fev or Fax, even if it meant them playing at Dewsbury or Featherstone for a while. If they'd spent money on their crumbling stadium rather than players they would already be in that situation, and maybe never made Super League in the first place. We can all get on our high horse about how they've ignored the rules, but they're still above both our clubs and still standing.

Yeah I totally get that Steve but when you mention the help that Fax got from the council I have to make an objection.

Fax were forced by the RFL to spend a lot of money on Thrum Hall because of new regulations that they said were been brought in and if we didnt do that then we would no longer be allowed to play in the top tier. These same regulations we were told would affect teams like Castleford and Wakefield who's grounds also needed improvement. Fax did get on with the work and ended up getting in a lot of debt before finally admitting defeat and having to sell Thrum Hall, these debts eventually came back to haunt us and lead to our relegation from SL and to the club nearly going out of existence. In the mean time teams like Wakey did nothing with their grounds besides make promises about what they were going to spend or what new stadia they were going to be moving in to.

They have basically been fed money year after year from the RFL on the back of unfulfilled promises. If Fax had of done the same I think we would still be in SL, maybe we would have been in the same position as Wakey who knows but thats really not the point.

PS I have just re-read you post before pressing Post and I guess Im kind of agreeing with the latter part of your post in a round about way.

I agree  with Steve's comment that Wake'y  may benefit from dropping down to championship level.they could  then bring through more younger local talent, and i would think as a top four team in the championship should get at least average attendances of 2.5 to 3 thousand.A new stadium is required  for their future at any level.Oxy boy loves blowing his Fax trumpet, when i played amateur rugby league in the late sixties early seventies four of our team played for Fax on a regular basis so by them standards Fax have dragged themselves up from near rock bottom.however the fans have to see the long term picture, and club's need to be run without the worry of being in debt from season to season.Batley are a great example for other clubs to follow.

How will dropping down a level allow Wakey to bring through more local talent? Did dropping down a level help Fax bring more local talent through? No, any local talent will now be snapped up by SL clubs with the offer of pavements made of gold. The only reason Fax now have so many local players playing for them is because they were deemed not good enough for their SL teams.

Edit: Believe it or not despite having about 5 local lads in the team against Huddersfield there will be more players from the Fax area in the Huddersfield squad.

That's because Huddersfield are a plastic club who can't produce their own.

I didn't exactly say that about dropping down to Championship level, I do believe it would be disastrous for them if they didn't get back up pretty quick, mainly because of their debt.

What I tried to say is that they may as well carry on the same way, and if they do eventually go bankrupt it wouldn't be too difficult for them to start up again as a brand new company playing at a different ground in Championship 1. With no debt and decent crowds for that level they would soon be promoted and locking horns with Fax and Fev, without a ground, but they don't own one anyhow. Without spending the money they would be relegated with a crippling debt to manage.

I don't think it's moral and fair, but the RFL wouldn't stop it, and would welcome them back with open arms if they re-formed.
