RL Challenge Cup Quarter Final Draw :

Yes, had the same impression - think they had made an effort to get kids in from the local amateur teams: my lad got some promotion through his club and was able to get in with his junior season ticket. Positives for Halifax were that they genuinely gave it their all for 80 minutes, and their pack (especially Lannon, Fairbanks and Tangata) really got stuck into their opponents - and McMeeken, Satae, Bousquet will hurt many SL teams this year. On the downside, thought Fax were really poorly organised in their own sets and came up with some dreadful last tackle plays.

It took Halifax 15-20 minutes to get to the pace of the game, after which it was largely over as a contest. Still, at 12-0 Eden was pulled up for offside when he took an interception and looked sure to score, with Catalans scoring off the resulting penalty. Bit of a shame as it is a decent-ish attendance on a warm sunny afternoon.

Mine won't be a popular view. But the more I think about it, the more I think that the last-16 format we've got (12 SL + 4 best of the rest) is fine for the late season competition we probably need when (1) the Challenge Cup starts this early and (2) there is no automatic promotion and relegation. We have cultivated a toxic notion, partially imported from football, that 'the league' is the only thing that counts. Fanbases of the 'nearly' clubs - mine amongst them - have had their interest sustained in the past by relegation battles or minor cups. Warrington haven't won many league titles but we have a cabinet full of Lancashire Cups and a few Premierships and Floodlit Trophies. Now you can sneer at those (and people do), but look at London and Hull now: their seasons are on life support a month into the season. Depending on the draw for the next round we could have 4 or 5 teams whose season is basically over by mid-April. Market that.

Why is the morale of the Giants fan base low? If you ask about them on here you are usually told they are going to be 'there or thereabouts' this year.
