We're off to Greece in a couple of weeks, so, get euros here? Get them from a cash point there? Or a combination of both?

I went to Athens when I was 19 on my own with just a cashcard and no money. I sometimes cringe at the thought of how unprepared I was; I had no idea whether my card would even work. Luckily it did and I didn't have a problem.

Can't help you with your actual point I'm afraid.

Depends on who you bank with and what their commission rate is for foreign currency withdrawals, it can more than offset any slightly better rate over there sometimes.

I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally

The general advice I've given over the years is: bring sterling and change it in a bank here. As Derwent said, though, it's a balancing act between exchange rate and commission rate. Hard to be exact, as both fluctuate. Try researching online. Local banks nearly all have English available on their websites - Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece (Ethniki). I'm pretty sure you will get stung if you buy euros in the UK. However, my step daughter, who works in the Post Office, and just told me the rate she can get - much better than I can, so if you know someone in the know, you might be better off buying euros in the UK. To be honest, you pays your money and you hopes you don't get ripped off.

Depends what cards you have in your wallet as some are really not good for using in cashpoints abroad.

Personally I would take a decent amount of Euros to tide me over then I have a Halifax CC for withdrawing cash abroad when/if needed.

Fairfx has been my go to place for currancy over the last few years.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

One decent option is to buy online from Post Office...for collection at your local, post office.

We only checked two places the PO and the local Thomas Cooks.

Cooks offered a "significantly" better rate.

Is it worth all the effort though for what ends up saving less than a quid?

The Post Office usually has the best deals on Euros, however I was in The WH Smiths, that hosts the loal PO, on Tuesday, and they had a sign up saying no Euros until Saturday.

When we went to Florida last year we got currency cards, these are like pre-paid debit cards, and seem to be best value, you just load them up and use them like your own bank cards. Available from the Travel Agents
