Newcastle has not only set records but also seen year on year growth. It is also a strategic market for RL with the Thunder.

This puts it ahead of some other markets where the benefit back to RL is minimal. It is also clearly far enough away to generate tourism dollars but close enough for RL fans to travel in big numbers.

Honestly I would like to see the RFL look to keep it in Newcastle at least for one more year. I'd like to see them then bring the Thunder into the action, either adding their game to the event or helping sell their game on the Friday night (3-day ticket offer, etc).

I'd thrn like to see the RFL work more with the relevant government/tourism bodies to see how they can get more neutrals to the event. The volume of RL fans is significant and not something one could see growing substantially, so the RFL should be looking to neutrals to fill the seats.

Couldn't agree more. Also playing it over the spring bank Holliday(29th may) would IMO see a boost in the Sunday attendance and I still feel that we should be targeting the large student population based in Newcastle but saying that if it's played over a bank Holliday weekend these students could have gone home. I'd also run a schools competition prior to magic weekend and maybe assign every team to a school in the Newcastle/Gateshead area.

I also think playing a England test match against either NZ or Australia at St.james park would boost the number of locals attending magic weekend no end as it's far easier to attract new fans to a sport that includes England which all the locals can support rather than 12 teams which they don't have any affiliation with and I'm sure we could hook a few locals onto our game after a said test match not only for magic weekend but the thunder as well.

A commitment from local authorities re playing RL in schools should be secure in return for a 5 year commitment

Local authorities don't control very many schools these days.

They can exert some influence. Could also commit to aid a small but growing community game

How?

would Sheffield work, its close to the heartland and easy to get to

I think Sheffield would be a good city but is Bramall Lane big enough?  The most popular day over the last couple of years got 39k and 40k but I don't think Bramall Lane could fit that many in.

To the OP - the answer is we don't know yet, we are waiting on the RFL to decide.

When I saw the title here I thought oh no not again but some good comments here and I think while it's developing and progressing in Newcastle why move it?

There must be a marketing relationship betweem consistency and outcome and that would be unusual for RL. I have always blamed the lack of Wembley for that awful period on the CC losing a great deal of its lustre.

I like this and your other post and ideas walter it smacks of going in all guns blazing which we've seen too little of in TGG.

For me if you are going to target a certain city/county/area like Newcastle/tyne&wear/the north east then you need to go all in and no half measures. A sort of 3 pronged approach with the taking to and staging of marque events like the magic weekend and England test matches against the top tier nations of Australia and NZ. This should be supported with and run in conjunction with a targeted grassroots campaign/plan which would include developing the game in as many primary&secondary schools alongside the local colleges and universities. For me it's a win win situation and a no-brainier as the staging of top class RL events in the regions biggest city Newcastle can expose and showcase our game to the local people like nothing else can while a strong and growing grassroots foundation built on the back of hosting these top class events can support these events in return with bums on seats at said events.

Excellent and going in with the marketing team contacting anybody and everybody to drum up interest and a high level of awareness sounds good to me. And also tagetting areas like the North East is a good way of generally avoiding bias and lack of interest from the press which Newcastle seems to have proven again and again.

It would be interesting to find out if Newcastle Utd season ticket holders were offered special offers or discounted tickets for MW.

Another great idea Walter, I hope you don't mind but I've forwarded your name, CV and a recent passport photograph and forged a letter of application (sorry!) for Blake Solly's job.

The RFL wrote back immediately and said can you start on Sunday! I said that would be no problem just to save time.

P S   Don't mention the letter and if they refer to it, distract them with your knowledge of RFL past failures and successes that should keep them from asking too many questions. ;)

P P S If your name is not Walter Sobchak, it is now. :D
