Some long trips for London Charges there...........

What happened to St Albans, have they gone backwards these days? Had thought Cornwall were interested in joining but guessing distance is an issue

Wouldn't Sheffield Hallam Eagles be better off trying to apply to NCL, or are they in essence Sheffield Eagles reserve outfit?

No, I hope we haven't. We played in the 'National Conference League Three' when it was set up in 2012, then when it became Conference League South in 2013 we played in that as well, the difference being that the NCL3, being an experiment so to speak, our traveling was paid for, in CL South it wasn't, and we just could not afford to spend that kind of money on coach trips every other week, so we are now back in the East League and doing very well.

Gloucestershire Warriors have returned to the local league and there may be a 7th team called Forest Bulldogs

The latter too from the Forest of Dean I understand. The All Golds played a game at Lydney year before last. Its an old coal mining community and has more in common  with the Welsh Valleys than leafy Gloucestershire. Will certainly be keeping an eye on that one.

If the Cheltenham side are still playing and the Warriors returning looks good for the county and building something up around Lionel Hursts GAG set-up.

It's tough for clubs like Dragons that are very strong for their local league but not quite ready to step up due to the huge gap between the leagues. Not sure if there's an easy answer though having seen how hard Northampton found the step up

How is it going to work with regards to the partnership between AG CLS and Glos Warriors? Will the best Glos Warriors players come to play for AG CLS?

I think long term it would be ideal for there to be two regional divisions, say Midlands A and Midlands B. Ideally for that you'd need 7 or 8 teams in each league though. I suppose the risk there is that in Midlands B teams may be more susceptible to walkovers. There's no such option for CLS to be split in terms of playing strength because of where the stronger teams are located IMO

The main difficulty is only four of the sides are good enough for a midlands premier. Any sides you chuck in to make up the numbers will soon fold or drop down.

Yes best GW players to AG CLS if they wish to follow the professional route. We will be working very closely. AG CLS will aim to move up to RFL Reserve league in a few years and then be replaced in CLS by another Gloucestershire club.

Hopefully the Forest of Dean XIII !?

Is that realistic? To have a team in the RFL reserve league, your first team really need to be playing in the Championship or higher to be competitive

I also think this is a good idea. To be honest, the whole of the South/Midlands, could do with forming a single pathway, culminating in the CLS as the premier competition. Resources can be pooled throughout the structure in terms of sponsorship etc, and would increase the strength of the game outside of the heartlands massively.

Until there is a critical mass of clubs in a position to play a full season of 18 games or more, its senseless to split CLS down or undertake pins in the map exercises.... unless the rationale for CLS changes away from being a league for clubs with players whose Primary sport is RL.

I agree, but long-term surely the goal is that quality of competition, without the enormous distances? Outlaws played 3 times in Wales this year, with London and Gloucester too, with round trips of 215 miles, 290 miles, 300 miles, 330 miles and 420 miles. If that's what it takes to get a decent level of competition then so be it, but that's a significant expense for an amateur club, which could be spent on other things if distances were reduced.

Thats the Catch 22 tho. Bring in regional conferences and reduce the travel to bring in more teams, but those teams are of a lesser quality and can only play May to August.
