Collating Club Statistics

Recommended Posts

Well, at Fev what we put together is the line up, scorers, date, for every single match.

Based on the sterling work of the RKC the Fev stats were very reliable up to 1991 so filling in the gaps wasn't too much to do.

From that all culmulative stats and career records can be extrapolated.

However, attendances for early years is impossible to fill in as many times the figure quoted was gate receipts rather than the crowd.

Non-playing Subs is also a nightmare as they are rarely mentioned if not used up until recently.

Over the past few years we've introduced kicking %ages. Again, very difficult to go back and fill in that type of stat retrospectively.

We should do opposition line ups and match officials too. Penalty & scrum counts used to be popular too.

For my clubs centenary one person compiled fixture and results for each season (back from 1901), mainly from trawling through old newspaper reports and programmes. (The club did not have a archive of note).  In just over 3100 games played, he was only unable to find results for 4 or 5.

He also compiled a list of player appearances and points scorers – although some seasons are more accurate and complete than others.

I have copies of this information – the fixtures and results I typed into a spreadsheet and I have the intention to do the same with the player appearances and points once I have worked out a format that will allow me to do what I want with them.

He had a different way of recording substitutes/blood bin replacements than I would have done.

I have added fixtures that he excluded. Towards the end of the clubs existence it only had one team. It played fixtures against other clubs ‘B sides’ or ‘shadow XVs’ which he excluded but I have included on the account that they had to be first team games as we had no second team.

I notice that some SL clubs now carry the heritage number of their players on their shirts. Does anyone know how loan players are classified? Is a loan player counted as a heritage player only for his parent club?

What we did at Fev was simply list every player who played in the first team at Fev, regardless of provenance. So that includes loan signings, DR and whoever. We're up to player number 1051 who was Josh Walters.

One area where I differed from my fellow compiler was with unnamed trialists (in our case nearly all of them pre-War). I wanted to list them and give them in a number even if no name ever turns up. The 'Unknown Rover' (s) as it were. I was over-ruled on that.

Stacks of ex-players have come back to the club for their certificates and numbers, and are genrally chuffed with the whole thing. We've had children and grand-children of deceased former players too which is always touching.

One other grey area to look out for I didn't mention is the non playing sub. If 14/15 or these days 14/15/16/17 are named but dont get on the field, then that doesn't count as an appearance. Fev have had about six or seven players that have been on the bench, not got on, and then never been selected again, so they don't count.

Coming to this awfully late but the Leeds sub in '89 was Gary Lord, who came on for John Bentley.
