Kallum Watkins enjoying playing next to Briscoe

Leeds centre Kallum Watkins admitted he’s enjoying playing with new wing partner Tom Briscoe after the former Hull FC man bagged a hat-trick on his competitive Rhinos debut.

Watkins was at the heart of all Briscoe’s tries, and the England international believes Briscoe’s presence means the Rhinos have excellent competition for places.

“He [Tom Briscoe] is a nice bloke and he’s a professional guy,” Watkins told League Express.

“He’s a top class player and he can certainly finish some tries off that other players can’t.

“It’s nice to have competition in our backline, which will get the best out of us.

“Having pace out wide gives me a lot of options. It’s about making the right decision at the right time.

“I was going to give him a fourth try but he was getting quite greedy and it was nice to get over.”

The first half was a tight affair with the scores locked at six each, before Leeds pulled away in the second-half with 28 unanswered points.

“We are really happy we how we performed, especially the second-half,” Watkins added.

“We expected a tough game and a tough atmosphere because it’s a hard place to come and win.

“Physically we haven’t been in that kind of environment for a while now.

“It’s going to take a lot out of our players, but it’s a great start for us.”
