Wakefield coach Richard Agar believes the majority of Jarrod Sammut’s Wildcats future could be spent playing at full-back.

The former Bradford pivot was initially brought in to cover the loss of centre Lee Smith, allowing utility back Paul Sykes to switch from stand-off to centre and give Sammut a chance to shine in the halves.

However, after much experimentation, Agar seems to prefer the Malta international at the back.

“It’s been hard for us to know what our best 1, 6, 7, 9 combination has been because we’ve playing with such a limited amount of football,” Agar said.

“It [playing full-back] gives him [Sammut] the opportunity to get on more plays with us and it gives him the freedom in attack to use his great attributes which are his speed and anticipation.

“It takes away a little of the ball playing responsibilities for him. It’s difficult to know what’s best for us because we’ve had limited ball and we’ve had to chop and change, sometimes through necessity and sometimes because we don’t feel we have been doing the job well enough. We’ll have a look over these next few weeks.”

If Sammut stays at the back, the onus will be on new signings Harry Siejka and Pita Godinet to provide the creativity. Agar is confident they have what it takes. He added: “Siejka has shown some alright signs. He needs to get a little bit more match fit and Godinet’s shown some really smart pieces of play as well. We’ll have a look and try to find something that works for us and give it a chance.”

Wakefield coach Richard Agar has blamed two first-half interception tries for his side’s Easter Monday loss against Huddersfield Giants.

Trinity were within two points of their West Yorkshire rivals mid-way through the first half, and were certainly giving as good as they got, but costly errors handed the Giants two more scores and meant they went into the break with a 14-point cushion, a deficit Wakefield would ultimately fail to overcome.

“We’ll look to a couple of tries we conceded in the first half from intercepts,” Agar said.

“We could have found ourselves going into the last 10 minutes of the game with a chance of taking it. For us, we can take plenty of positives out of it again. We worked hard, were enthusiastic but the little errors are hurting us big time and we need to iron them out of our game.

“In the first half we showed some real positivity with the ball but we’ve passed the ball to Huddersfield to come over our try line twice. When you come in at 24-10 that was undoubtedly the difference on the scoreboard.

“The players feel disappointed but we are quite positive. We’ve been in a tough stretch of football but we are quite positive that there’s plenty to build on and believes they are still finding their best combination in key positions.

“There’s part of our games that we can move forward with. But it’s ironing out those fundamental errors. At this moment in time we need a lot of things to be going our way and when we’re doing that, we’re bursting our own balloon a little bit.”

Wakefield second-rower Matt Ryan has expressed his frustration at yet another Super League loss against Huddersfield yesterday, but insists the Wildcats can take plenty of positives out of it.

The 25-year-old former Parramatta Eels star, who has made eight appearances for Wakefield this season, believes ironing out a few issues could make them a match for any team in the league. He said: “We gave them [Huddersfield] a few too many easy tries through our errors but there’s positives to take out of it. We get a bit of a break now and then can concentrate on our next game.

“The late first-half tries we conceded hurt us but we still came in at half-time thinking we had a chance. At half-time Rich [coach Agar] spoke to us and we all still had belief that we could come out in the half and get the win. We started okay but silly errors cost us.

“We can score our tries and if we can get our combinations together and start gelling as a team for the 80 minutes then we’ll worry every team in the competition but we’re just not doing that right now so it’s a bit frustrating.

“We’re building but we’ve got to stop using that as an excuse. We’ve got to start winning these types of games and from now on that’s our mentality, we’ve got to start grinding out some victories.”

Finally, Ryan thanked the Wildcats fans for sticking with the team through a difficult run of results.

“The fans have been unbelievable on Friday and today, rocking up and supporting us,” he added.

“There’s not much more we can to do thank them for sticking by us. We’re trying our best out there and hopefully we can get a few wins for them soon.”

Bradford Bulls managing director Steve Ferres has publicly apologised to everyone involved with the club following what he described as a “woeful and embarrassing” display against Wigan yesterday.

The Odsal club conceded 15 tries and over 80 points for the first time. In a statement, Ferres said: “On behalf of Bradford Bulls, I would like to apologise for what was a truly woeful and embarrassing display, yesterday, against Wigan Warriors.

“It was, without any doubt, the worst performance I have seen by a Super League side – and one of the worst I have ever seen. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters who gave up a bank holiday, despite the busy Easter Weekend traffic, and made the strenuous journey over the Pennines.

“Our loyal supporters stuck with the team throughout the course of what was a tortuous 80 minutes. The squad has hit a low point and a route and branch review of what went wrong, why it happened and where we are going is now underway.

“The board of directors accept they have inherited a squad, which has been stripped of talent and hampered by injuries. But that cannot be used as an excuse for what happened at the DW Stadium.

“The club’s new owner, Marc Green, is working tirelessly to improve its fortunes. In our sport, I have never met anyone as committed to turning something around. Supporters can rest assured that no stone will be left unturned as Mr Green and his team address the problems currently facing the club.

“At this stage, all we ask is for you, our fantastic supporters, to work with us and remain as committed as you have always been. We are commited to again making this club something for you, the supporters, to be proud of.”

Leeds Rhinos have released a statement apologising to fans for heavy congestion in Headingley’s North Stand yesterday for the visit of Salford Red Devils.

The club share the stadium with the Yorkshire cricket team, who were also at home on the day, meaning large delays and, for some, obstructed views in the early stages of the match.

The statement said: “On behalf of the club, we would like to apologise to any supporters who were inconvenienced before kick off due to congestion entering the North Stand.

“The Easter Monday fixture saw the Rhinos play at home on the same day that Yorkshire CCC were at home in the County Championship. In recent years, we have had both teams at home on a number of occasions unfortunately the systems we have put in place for those games were not successful at this afternoon’s match.

“Clearly there are lessons to learn and we will revisit the plan for future games. Due to the success of our family entertainment around the shop concourse area, a significant number of supporters arrived at the same time 10 minutes before kick off which led to the congestion.

“We are not allowed to delay the kick off apart from on safety grounds, which this did not constitute, as the vast majority of fans in the 14,000 plus crowd were in place for the kick off. The queue was constantly being monitored by stewards on the ground and via CCTV to make sure that we got fans to their seats as quickly as possible but clearly that was not quick enough to avoid disappointment for those spectators.

“We would also like to apologise to those supporters who had arrived early to take up their seats in the Paddock Stand and were unable to enjoy fully the opening twenty minutes of the game due to the congestion in front of them.

We will continue to work hard to provide the best matchday experience possible for your visit to Headingley Carnegie and hope that the disruption at the start did not spoil your enjoyment of a well earned win.”

Wigan coach Shaun Wane heaped praise on his side after watching them run in 15 tries against Bradford and score 84 points for the second consecutive Easter Monday.

The Warriors, fresh off the back of a convincing win away at St Helens on Good Friday, thrashed the troubled Bulls and, in the process, forced their way into Super League’s top four. If they win their game in hand, they will push Saints into fourth on points difference.

“Their attitude really impressed me over this Easter period,” Wane said.

“I wanted the manner to be good. After 20 minutes we had completed at 100 per cent and we were defending really well.

“After a good win on Friday with such a short turnaround I thought it was really impressive and it was a fantastic win for us. Some of the tries we scored were outstanding.”

St Helens coach Nathan Brown has graciously admitted his side did not deserve anything less than a second defeat in a row when they faced Widnes yesterday.

The Vikings put in a polished display to knock off their neighbours 40-26 and the top spot in Super League.

“With four or five minutes to go, we were still in it, but the score probably reflected the game,” Brown said.

“The guys had plenty of fight in them – 18-4 down and we fought our way back – but credit to Widnes.”

Warrington coach Tony Smith remains confident in his side’s chances this season despite watching the Wolves slump to their fifth loss in 10 games against Castleford yesterday.

After an encouraging Good Friday victory over Widnes, Warrington looked to have finally hit form, but the Tigers inflicted a 40-6 defeat yesterday and Wire now sit eighth in the Super League table, just a point ahead of Hull KR.

“I can remember a feeling of going to Catalan about two years ago and getting pumped by a similar score,” said Smith.

“But I think we went on to win the Challenge Cup that year and finish the year very, very strong so some of these days can really bring you together as a group and focus you.

“That’s what we’re going to have to do, we’ll get out there again in Super League in a couple of weeks’ time and our focus will turn over to Challenge Cup this week and we’ll regroup and refocus.

“Nobody shone for us out there. I’m not saying people didn’t try, but there wasn’t too many shiners or glowing lights in our team.”
