  1. Awesome to be able to announce we are going to be a hub for the Castleford Tigers Talent Pathway in the Midlands! We have already seen three players - Lewis Peachey, Emma Lumley and Sophie Todd - progress from taking up RL at Outlaws to playing for Castleford, and we hope this link will support future generations to make the same progression. The benefits are not limited to those progressing to play in Super League though, with this link also aiming to support the development of young players and coaches in the East Midlands more generally. Joe Shepherd, Director of Coaching, Nottingham Outlaws said: "This exciting link up will enable local players to start playing rugby league with Nottingham Outlaws, and progress along our pathway to reach an appropriate level for themselves. Those players with sufficient talent will have the opportunity to progress on the highest levels of the game with Castleford Tigers, just as we've seen with the likes of Lewis, Emma and Sophie." 2. Not a massive fan of the trivial nature of some of the above posts. It's a very serious crime, treat it like one!

  3. While other countries (USA & Aus) seem to have a ‘can do’ approach and then deal with set backs later, I find the UK has an approach more of a ‘we can’t do it because..’. . Until that attitude in SL and the RFL changes, things will not progress as they could.

  5. After a quarter of a century, is it time to re-evaluate the success/failures of Super League against its founding principles? On the one hand, we are still here as a professional sport embedded in the Sky Sports schedule. On the other, nobody could claim that we are in the position we thought we would be when we set out on the new era 25 years ago. For my latest piece in The Critic I have gone back and looked at the dreams we once had of national and global domination. Is it even possible now to finish off the revolution? Thoughts from you all welcome as ever! https://thecritic.co.uk/super-league-at-25-the-unfinished-revolution/

  6. So essentially what he was saying is what most people saw when he was appointed. The clubs thought they were bringing him in to work for them and their own interests, but what the game actually needed was someone to make decisions for the good of the competition in spite of those clubs. This really emphasises what everyone thinks, that the SL clubs have more power than necessary and in my view draining the sport of its potential by using the Sky TV funds and SL votes to stay afloat and monopolise a place in SL. If the competition is going to enlarge it's audience it needs to change this dynamic. It's a controversial view but my personal opinion is that at least half of the clubs in the competition offer no commercial value whatsoever and the sport needs to deal with that issue or it will become even more insignificant in the national psyche than it already is

  7. It's usually literally the same one or two fans for any team that's going well who get a bit full of themselves and run all over the forums going on about how great their team is, whether it's Leigh, Fev or anyone else. Most Fev fans are far from complacent about Batley or any other team because we've seen them all turn us over too may times, I still have nightmares about that George Flanagan drop goal!

  8. PE's focus is always even more short-term than that of the SL clubs. It's not the answer to a problem that requires a long-term vision.

  9. A great article which I think sums up everything perfectly. If you want the very essence of being a rugby league fan you've captured it with the sentence below: "Fans still believe that the game should be at the centre of our national life, but at the same time, nobody would honestly claim that the game has made the necessary sacrifices to achieve it."

  10. I know you all like a handball connection and there are some decent European teams who do this. Play their domestic games against piddling teams in a 2,000 capacity venue and then shift to the 11,000 hall down the road when PSG are in town. It seems to work quite well. I'd certainly be okay with it for the Broncos in some far-off imagined future. Right now, I'd settle us for rewinding the clock about 12 months to when we looked like a coherent club.

  19. I think anyone from the NRL would get a nasty shock if they got involved with RL over here. No more open doors in the media, and hostility from all quarters, including a defensive attitude from any UK clubs who felt threatened by ambitious plans.

  25. I'm assuming this would be related to Luton's proposed new stadium, a 17,500 capacity ground. They were supposed to move in at the start of the current football season, but 2024 is the new aim. 'A bit of a dump' is the kindest thing I have ever heard said about Kenilworth Road.

  26. This is quite correct. There were a lot of mixed messages in what Elstone did and said and for all of that its still impossible to say what his vision or strategy actually was. At first I thought he was going to be a progressive sort that would make the changes needed but that seemed all talk really and his actions went further and further away from that as time went on. Apart from pretty cosmetic changes not much fundamentally changed. I think the game's problems go much deeper than new monikers or logos. Its pretty hard to get support and bring people along when no one knows what you are trying to do or what the end game is.

  28. The article simply confirms what many already knew. The self interest of a few has and will continue to damage the game as a whole. SL clubs should not be running the game but they won’t give up deciding their own individual destiny without a fight. The issue is who could have the power to take control and push through changes that would be opposed by those SL clubs adversely affected? That would mean some clubs would have to put the greater good of the game ahead of their personal situation. I can’t see a solution to this conundrum.

  31. I know this divides opinion but I actually like, for these early rounds, the stripped down approach of the BBC. Its obviously a shame when the link goes but I like how it feels. The interaction with social media was good too and it was great seeing all those RL fans posting using the #hashtag.

  33. Well done to both the outlaws and the tigers. I’d love to see more super league clubs linking up with expansion clubs throughout the midlands and beyond. If more grassroots clubs can be founded throughout the midlands in the next decade or so could the region possibly support a joint academy bid? Both the West Midlands and East Midlands combined allowing the best junior talent to regularly compete against youngsters from Leeds, wigan and Warrington etc.

  34. Oxen (or Elite sports) have produced or designed around 8 or 9 shirts in less than a year of working with Leeds, not one of them has had the actual proper Leeds Irregular hoops on them. I hope they stop pedalling all these different shirts and cheap off field gear and concentrate on making a well designed and well made range of products.

  36. Apologies for dragging this up again but I haven't had the time to post and would like to say that if Leigh have a very committed rich owner, and very modern stadium and are going to run a first class academy then this looks great to me. The more clubs who can operate in good stadiums with player development and sound financial backing the better we are. Relegation is likely I know but they only had weeks to prepare. I hope they do well......

  40. Tom Holmes on his Instagram said he missed out due to a "slight injury" and added "Already making progress in rehab but a few more tweaks to help settle my nerve in my back/hammy and hopefully be back in no time at all". Sounds short term, we missed him yesterday but might not be the worst thing in the world if Nu gets another game or two at half back to help get him back into the swing of things. Also Steve Slater mentioned on FB that John Davies had a head injury from last week so that's why he wasn't in the squad.

  41. Hicken is on the money here. He's not some kind of alien to the sport or the region either, he's produced excellent documentaries/docu-series' on on RL, Leeds Rhinos, and Leeds United, among others. Perhaps once again we find a flaw in Elstone's style too though. Whilst Hicken describes attempting to pass changes as "frustrating" and Elstone's need to find policies that had majority support, does anyone have any inclination as to what he would have done if he didn't have those problems. What solutions or grand ideas did he have? I feel Elstone's strategy relied heavily on keeping things close to his chest rather than stating any vision in public - I presume he had a reason for that but he's the one out of a job so it is reasonable to question it now.

  42. Bringing Ealing RU into this gives some useful perspective. If someone said that Ealing were considering moving to Plough Lane, I would think they were mad. They have been developing their modern ground but they have a very small fanbase. I would advise them to continue improving the ground incrementally up to c. 5k capacity and, in the unlikely event they make the RU Premiership, remain at ETSG but take 2 or 3 big games to a bigger ground. From the outside, this seems to be what they are planning. In any case, Plough Lane is too far away from Ealing. I often read that the RU Premiership bosses don't want Ealing but, like SL, they'll have minimum standards for stadiums and if these standards are met, this is all that will count.

  43. Despite what some may say, they had the chance for change with the Canadian clubs coming on the scene. With the demise of the WP I think all of that is lost. I remember in the past all clubs had a board and they decided what was to be. These one man outfits are holding their game back and also the lower leagues who should be getting some of the Sky money. Cannot see any change until the above set up changes.

  48. Enjoyed that. Congratulations Widnes, they did the job as expected against much better opposition than they perhaps expected. Well done to West Wales too. Plenty of positives to take from that and if they can keep that team together and build they'll go well this year. Plenty of raw talent that will only get better with more game time and they won't play a better team than the Widnes one all year in League 1.

  49. Of course you don't have to apologise. And as I said, you are very much entitled to whatever view you hold as I stated. My view is that for us it will be a massive achievement to get around the top 6. Halifax have an expectation that they will, so it is all about perceptions of our squads I suppose. On yesterday's performances, right now, I wouldn't have too great expectations of Halifax, but of course we are at the beginning of a long competition.
