  1. I agree Sidnee but I dont think he lost us the match. He was poor, and inconsistent for both teams but i do think they got a bit lucky with some of the decisions he made. they were consistently offside too. We tried too hard in places, forcing forward passes ect we failed to win that match when we looked in a different league to them for most of it.

I was really surprised at how few sheffield fans turned up! Dewsbury and Batley bring about twice as many as that if not 3 times!

    MOM

1 Kain - flawless match for me tackled his socks off and kicking had really improved

2 saxton caused no end of woes for them

3 morrison - good hands, good angles, lots of effort

The ref wasn't good, but we should have won. Why with ten minutesa to go did we not take a penalty under the sticks and then two minutes later try a drop kick? Same mistakes as last season. Silly penalties and idiot mistakes. The new guys seem to have caught the omplaint. In fact with the exception of Morrison they are no better than the blokes we got rid of.

  2. very sorry to hear this. i worked with John many years ago for McAlpine when they were building drax power station. i also believe he was one of the founders of knottingley rockware, along with Reg Rowbottom. as you saysportbilly, a rovers stalwart. condolences to johns family.

Had many a jocular quip with him. Sad to hear of his passing. RIP

  3. Slightly askew request.

Does any of the bretheren have either a "Best of Bob Seger" or at least the album with 'night moves' on it (prob Hollywood nights) and/or Back in Black by AC/DC on CD that they would be prepared to loan me!!!!

I have the tracks I need but sadly these days I no longer have a vinyl player!!! For the younger bretheren that's what people used to listen to in the olden days!!!!

People who know me know how important music is to me - all loaned CD's will be treated with the utmost respect!

    Many Thanks.

    Big Ginge!

Bob Seger who he? Sounds like a bloke who likes a good cheap smoke. Heard of Lita Rosa and Glen Miller. In face she once entertained me.

  4. I suspect you're right about this.

It's interesting to speculate what it is that a coach might do to develop a defensive team. (Those who know what training is done don't have to speculate) Does it mean that a greater proportion of training time is devoted to defensive patterns and organisation, tackling technique, strength in the tackle, and wrestling techniques? And what about the 50 or so percent of the game when the team is in possession? More drives, less passes, little in the way of speculative moves, more inside ball, and a generally conservative approach looking to physically dominate the opposition?

Not long now, before we start to find out. I'll cheer thrilling rugby and I'll cheer the thrill of a victory. I hope we get plenty of both.

I dearly hope to see an improvement in

    1. Giving away stupid penalties

    2. Holding on to the ball i.e. less knock on's

    3. Passes going out from our centres to our wingmen.

    4. A complete overehaul of our general discipline

The number of timess we have been have been in an attacking position and then give away possession!

If we can correct the above we can go to the top.

  5. think whitehaven will be the strugglers this season

It all depends on how the team gel. That is down to them and the coach. My thoughts are certainly in the top four. Where the others finish is up to the same circumstances.

  6. i would hope we get a decent crowd colin. It will go a long way to making up lost ground.

Be nice to see some of the new faces.

I hope so too Robin. I am so bored what with the weather and no matches. The 24 hours in a day have seemed like a week. Now I know what it must be like to be permanently confined and unable to get out. To top it all the ruddy computer went down. I have just spent a hour talking to Talk Talk. Three days without it. Bring back steam radio all is forgiven. It will be interesting to see how many of Sunday's team become regulars.

  7. Problem is bud, DP and the club cant win either way, he doesnt say anything regards team he will select and people pay 14 notes they will play helll up, or he does like he has, trys to be honest with people says will be fringe team and people play helll up. I think with all the new players we have we will need plenty of games to get the combinations / attack / defence patterns DP wants right. Either way i will be at the game with a car full, and hope others go so we can compensate a little for the 30k or so lost with the 2 friendlies

Hopefully most of us will be going to watch us play Blackpool, and how many names from the first thirteen selection for that match has anybody seen play at PO road before or anywhere else?

  8. Ah, but did he smile ? because he didn't have to

Kevin at least greets you with a smile and a hearty 'hello, how can I help', some think they are God's gift and are snidely with it.

If you try to be pleasant they think you are soft and start to take the p/ss. Nobody's perfect but at least he tries.

  9. Albany was a three quarter. I remember him playing for us just as we had signed Guest from Cas. Had guile he was also fast. If I remember rightly he had a scrap yard behind the Railway hotel. Norman was a second row forward with pace to burn and played some good games for Fev. While we are at it Ron Bailey of Louie Hale fishshop fame doesn't feature much anywhere. he was another second rower with lots of pace. Louie Hale? All the old timers will remember her fish shop top of Newport Street. Ron's house was on Wilson Street. I think it is the paper shop now. Behind it they had a yard that housed a machine for scratting tatties. I think he was Louie Hales nephew. They were of course related to the Greenhalghes. And while we are at it who remembers Joe Hoyle of butchering fame. He didn't run he galloped. I have seen every challenge cup final we have played in and still rank 1952 highly. Just a homespun team that beat the great Wigan at PO Road. They had Nordgren, Lawrence, Ashcroft, etc a team full of internationals. I can still see Mitchell in my mind's eye cutting inside from the left wing to leave their defence standing. And Eric Batten's shoulder charge had to be seen to be believed. I could go on but remember we have had great days and when the earth has done a few turns more we can come again.

That should have been Ron Bradley of course. Senior moment. Players and authors mixed up.

  10. Mick Clamp, Gary Waterworth, Cliff Lambert are in the book of those you mentioned.

So is Albany Longley but not Norman.

  11. I was re-reading Ron Bailey's book "100 Greats of Featherstone Rovers" this morning and I was surprised to find that Steve Molloy did not rate a mention. I know it's in the nature of these books for readers to be surprised by omissions and the list itself becomes a talking point, but it got me thinking about Molloy and his contribution.

He was at Fev for years, three successful seasons in the top flight and the first summer season of 1996.

He was a very good forward. He was our last ever GB international.

He made the GB touring team in 1996 despite playing second division rugby.

Did the manner of his leaving leave a bad taste for Rovers fans? IIRC he was one of the first RL players that took advantage of the news freedom of contract laws when he went to Sheffield.

    OR

Is he fondly remembered as a top quality player from the time when Fev stars were among the best players in the whole league?

I remember him as a good player but over the years we have had as good if not better. Not having read Ron's book I don't know who he classes above him. Very good players who never seem to get a mention were Mick Clamp, Norman Longley, Waterworth, and Kent. Perhaps some of these are listed. Most of these are forwrds and if we are looking at them mainly how about Lambert, Maiden and Palmer and Anderson. All good players. Anderson particularly as a front rower when scrums were still contested.

(Sorry about the random nature of this post, Im as bored and frsutrated as everyone else about not having any games to talk about.)

  12. Aye, it was a lot of hard work but all to no avail. The terracing was in same condition as of now and after clearing large areas, were told we had no chance. Ah well, we did our bit.

I was there too Bob. Same result this time I understand match is off after ground inspection

  13. anybody seen vausey and south african slow bowler harris in the same room? No? Very similar.

So, back to the thread. Last blizzard i can remember was a 2nd div game v carlisle about 93. The snow was coming horizontal across the railway end.

And yes oldrover. A soddin great post.

The game that still sticks in my craw after all these years was when we played at Hull in the quarter final of the Challenge Cup. We were holding our own and were in front when a minor infringement occurred in our half. The touch judge ran on with a raised flag. The referee ignored him and play continued. The ball was passed to Hollindrake on the left wing. He was about to be tackled and ran round the corner flag and touched down. Where was the touch judge? Still 50 yards down the field in the centre of the pitch holding his flag up. Decision a try. We lost. I still cannot believe that. The ruddy fates were really against us that day.

  14. Anybody got a mate who works for the council and drives a gritter? A couple of trips round the car park wouldn't go amiss ;)

I thought we already employed the council at the ground. Going back to what has been said. The match was called off last year by the referee while we were still working. An early examination would help us all. If it were declared fit subject to A,B,or C I would be down like a shot.

  15. just thought exactly the same myself. Already some of our leading football clubs have called their games off. With the current weather an early pitch inspection is the way to go. Save a lot of time and effort.

Some sense in that. Last season about 5 of us turned up and worked our socks off in freezing weather and then it was cancelled.

  16. QUOTE (Jimmy B @ Jan 5 2010, 01:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
    No Bob that game (20 - 6) was 21st March 1959.

The blizzard game was 8th March 1958

I remember it well. Because of the crush I took two house bricks through the turnstiles with me to stand on to assist in watching. What a great idea without them I wouldn't have seen much of the game. I would probably be arrested if it where now.

  17. Colin, I don't mind collecting for you but I assume I will be doing golden gamble as well, so not sure how much will be put into the bucket. I suppose every little helps :).

Please PM me the details of the charity so I can make a label for my bucket. Thanks

Stephanie, As always thank you so much. It is the Featherstons Sports and Education Foundation. Chris and Mark are helping so that makes four of us. I am also doing GG but will have a bucket and a poster at the side of me for donations given. I will just draw their attention to the bucket after giving them their tickets. We are meeting up at 1.30. I will take the buckets after the collection. Finish at 2.55pm. I don't think the match will be on, but if we are prepared then so much the better. Col. Chris please read this as my computer is having the shakes.
