  1. We seem to have sorted the Golden Gamble in terms of bodies. I am looking for a couple of bodies to collect a bit for our charity on Sunday. Just hold a bucket until about 5 minutes before the match and then give it to me at the Miller gate. No counting, no selling, no singing, stand next to or hold a poster. Just volunteer and bring your bucket. Cheers Col. Happy New Year. Are you there Stephanie and Chris. My computer has been crashing all day. Can you help again? Thanks in anticipation. If you can't thanks anyway for your past support. Of course we need a match to collect from. Fingers crossed.

  2. Over weight maybe but still the one to close down scored a few tries in his famous old style , D P scored a few tries also showing we may have a half back waitin on the touch line

Agreed. The skill is still there in both quarters.

  3. Wasn't the Railway End just shale until terracing arrived in the the seventies?

    That considered I'll say 1981

Two things. As I said we put sleepers down in the late forties early fifties as terracing. I think you mean concrete terracing. Another thing that stuck me is that there are crowd crash barriers there in the photo. They have gone. That might help.

  4. sometime after the 74 strike when the washer in the pic was installed and before the closure of the pit in 83. I'm guessing 77/78ish.

The mock tudor gable end on the house puts it 60's/70's!

    I might be wrong like.

As one who helped put the original sleeer terracing down around 1944/45 the terracing is far in d vance of that so forget pre 50 I reckon. Floodlights? The original ones came from Hunslet and I helped with them. Is that a SHADOW OF A BULL on the ground. I seem to see two horns and a body. I'll settle for 1967. With 73 as a second guess.

  5. mmmmmmmm there's a gag in there somwhere rob ;) i'll post it when i think of it.lololol

So after clearing the air about Tommy H, and having a laugh at Dean Sampson what is the position regarding Jamie Thackray which what the thread was about. I have asked twice and somebody else also where the rumour came from. That query was never answered. Just hot air do you think?

  6. I'd like to second the vote from Sportbilly and wish each and everyone of you a very happy and healthy New Year. I know that we do not all agree on matters , but your points of view are very much respected and admired by me. This will almost certainly be the last season I am physically able to support Rovers and I hope it will be one of the best. I would like to thank so many people who over the years have made following the team a pleasure and at the same time a chore. I know that the future of the club lies in attracting more yuoung people to watch the game and hopefully they will as I, and many others did, carry on following throughout their lives.

Being able to help Rovers in any small way has given me much pleasure and meeting all you wonderful fans must rate as the highlight for me. I wish the club and team every success and thank Chris Westwood for allowing me to spout my thoughts in the programme for the last eleven years, sadly I will no longer be able to do that in the future as I am unable to commit any longer.

May God Bless each and everyone of you for making my life just that little bit better and that goes for the many friends I have made throughout the rugby league World.

a HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL. BOB I AM SAD TO HEAR WHAT YOU SAY. IS THIS THE COMPLETE END OF YOUR ASSOCIATION? You have given lots of your time to the club and have always been a gentleman. I for one will miss you. May I wish you and your good lady all the best for the future. I don't know how ill you are but the tone of your posting indicates, not good. If there is anything that I can do for you please ask. Incidentally I think the least the club could do is offer you a Life Membership for all your efforts. Keep ticking over old friend and I look forward to seeing you in the future. Not even a close call! Colin

  7. All being well the Golden Gamble will go ahead at the next home game. However we do need more volunteer collectors to maxmise the takings. If you can spare a bit of time on match day please get in touch with me or the club. The Golden Gamble is an important income for the club and needs supporting.

REMEMBER: ANYONE CAN WIN AT ANY TIME. EVEN CARL COULD WIN. WELL, MAYBE, WELL, IT'S REMOTELY POSSIBLE BUT KEEP TRYING.

Thanks for your PM Vic. Can't send you one as I have used up my quota for today. I am apparently selling GG and doing a collection for the Charity at two home matches. The Charity is also short of bodies. Any replies yet and who is the replacement?

  8. Dewsbury were selling half time tickets at their friendly yesterday so it might be worth the club selling them for the friendlies.

Any take is worthwhile. I feel we ought to do it. Money for the club. Vic might know Carol's contact number. If you do Vic let me know your thoughts. I know it might be just one game but.....

  9. Has anybody any information about when we start the Golden Gamble? As a collector I need to know if we are collecting at home friendlies. I have some collection work to do for the Charity and if I have the above info I can schedule accordingly. Col.

  10. Just been looking at the fixtures and note that the new Welsh club which is to be situated at Neath is in Div One. I thought they were mooted to go into our league. I must of missed that change of mind. That is if I haven't got it wrong from the start. This Welsh joblot is getting more and more confusing as rules are being made up and bent to accommodate them.

  11. Had my letter of complaint to the YP printed on Monday along with a photograph of a squaddie and I assume, our two PNG lads.

Nice one Bob, more of a reasoned argument than a complaint I thought which really read better for that. Col

  12. same here, but i wish the statement was in plain English. I'd to read it twice before i realised it was good news.

Same here DMS. It sounded a bit like politician talk talk. But will someone tell me how they see the last bit-are we to be a feeder club to Wakefield and if this development comes to fruition will it jeopordise our relationship with Leeds who seem to have a junior player tie up with us.?

  13. Quoted in todays press that Wakefield are hoping that surplus cash from their stadium sale, will help fund the new one.

I was under the impression that the ground was sold to a property developer, hence the new naming of the ground.

It would be ironic if the fate of the proposed ground hinged upon Fev agreeing to groundshare and contributing to the running costs.Press reports also state that Rodneys consortium have already invited C*s to groundshare but this offer has been refused. The next best thing, in his eyes, lower the sights and invite Fev. Every little helps I expect.

Personally, I would not touch the deal with a barge pole.

As has been stated before. Our land is worth around

  14. Even as a young lad it was easier for me to travel to Wakefield than Featherstone, but I didn't I would take a bus from Hemsworth to the Travellers which took 40 minutes then , and walk via the path opposite the Junction to the ground. As I became older I would ride my bike leaving it in the back yard of someone living near the ground. When I lived in Coventry I would travel up when I was free to watch the games, even now when it's difficult for me to get about, I still only missed two away games last season ( Workington and Tolouse) I am very, very sure that I am not going to travel to a former pit heap near Rothwell to help swell the coffers of those who think they are better. Luckily it says they are " Hoping" to attract us, no doubt pressure being brought upon us by the district council, well here's my answer.

THE RFL COULDN'T MAKE US MERGE, WE FOLLOWED OUR TEAM AND TOOK ALL THAT CAME OUR WAY, WE ARE NOW GETTING OUT OF THAT DEPRESSION AND GO FORWARD WITH DIGNITY AND EXPECTATION. GROUND SHARE ? IF THEY WANT TO GROUND SHARE, THEY CAN COME TO FEATHERSTONE !!!! but only for their "big" games

Same here Bob. I was born in Fev. The job took me to Bramley and I lived there. I used to travel for every home game and most of away. I had a BSA bantam 125cc. Headingley was 5 minutes away on a 44 bus. I only went when Rovers were playing there. One of my lasting memories was Steve Evans tearing them to bits at Headingley from stand off. Atkinson and Smioth their wingers were playing and never got near him. I also will only go to PO Road, or the near vicinity. We may move the pitch a bit to fit our plans in but same club same set up. There has been too much hard work to throw it all away now.

  15. I'm still not convinced at all that Carl Gibson ever played stand-off. Can anyone provide any evidence that he actually did?

If that is the question and not the one the thread was about then you have had an answer from a Batley fan. Yes he regularly played at stand off. If you are asking about Rovers then he did not play regularly at stand off although he might have had the odd game there. If we go back to the main thread then Gibson was a stand off with Batley and as such qualifies in the terms of the question along with others. Therefore black men have played at half back, can play at half back, and the question is answered.

  16. Aye he did Colin, and a blindingly good player and all round nice bloke he was/is. But his better and most effective positions were arguably centre or Full Back. Subjective is the debate.

Yes Robin-you are right. But the question was- 'Can Black Men play half back.' In view of the evidence the answer has to be -yes- The question wasn't was he better at centre or wing. If any player has played half back well and is black then irrespective of how well he played in other positions the answer to the question has to be in the affirmative. The fact that he played in other positions just confirms how good he was or is. The same goes for white players. John Newlove played centre as well as stand off. The fact that he played in another position doesn't make him a player that can't play half back.

  17. He might have filled in at 6 due to a severe injury crisis on a single occasion, but he definitely wasn't a stand-off! Wing or centre were the positions he filled for us.

In my opinion with Eastmond getting the St Helens number 7 shirt that is proof enough. To say that Pryce is not a standoff is wearing blinkers. Wigan scrum half is black. We also have in addition to Samoa, PNG, Fiji, Cook Islands and the Maori team all with scrum halfs and stabd offs, a team starting in Jamaica. Starting or beginng is the operative word. Our friendly Jamacian may not know a lot about RL and may be making a hasty judgement on the few games he has seen. Carl Gibsob was a good player irrespective of where he played. The fact is he played stand off. If he played in other positions bec ause the team had gaps there only shows he had versitility, making him an even better player. Finally it seems there is someone hovering to take offence at every conceivable opportunity. What a sad person in a country where we fought two world wars for freedom of speech. There have been no degrading statements and some very positive ones about black players. Jimmy Russel was a good scrum half in spite of his bow legs. Now I expect the Bow legged PC brigade to be sending messages of objection.

  18. Kyle Eastmond? Preston Cambell? Hanley was never ever a six though mate.

Difficult to discuss really without been accused of racism..... I do believe that their must be some genetic differences between all the races, but what they are is difficult to pin point. On the other hand maybe their is a lack of black half backs because there are / were no black half backs acting as role models for aspiring professionals?

This trait appears in rugby & football management.... Bar Tigana how many other black managers have their been in the English to flight?

How many world class male tennis players are black? How many world class boxers are black?

I also think that the barriers some people face may influence the sports they play as well as their position just as much as their race.

I don't give that it any credence at all. What about all the half backs that play for PNG, Samoa, Fiji, etc. It just about as bad as the film about basketball 'White men can't jump.' If you see the black athletes running you can see they have the flexibility and speed to be great half backs. It is all a matter of training. The statement about Jamacians sounds a bit rum to me.

  19. In the article he says he would like to be known as Gareth the rugby player, but before he came out with this that was all i and probably many more thought. He is the one who has made the big deal out of it

I totally agree. I am also sorry for his wife.
