Follow the thread for a potted history of Vesta ready-meals.

First paella I ever ate was a Vesta one. After years of trying to like prawns, shrimps, crab and other crustaceans, I finally decided about 30 years ago to give up trying to like them. So i'd never even attempt a paella these days, even a Vesta one.

We used also to buy the Vesta Chow Mein with the crispy noodles that fluffed up in the oil, quite liked them. The Vesta curry was disgusting, it had raisins and sultanas in it.

  2. I recall Lorimer's disallowed goal in the 1975 European Cup Final.  Even Bayern admit today that it was a goal.  That and Beckenbaur's rugby tackle n the box on Clarke gave Bayern the cup and caused the subsequent riot.

I remember Leeds signing Lorimer.  He was only 15 but never really lost his Scottish twang.

    Tommy Doc

Two Tommy Doc anecdotes.  He promised to have Rotherham out of the second division in a season, he did, into the third. And when he was a player at Preston with the great Tom Finney.  In those days, in the summer, players were on a "retainer."  Finney was getting £15 pw Tommy only £10.  He complained to the manager and was told that it was because Finney was a better player than he was.  "not in summer he's not" was the reply.

  4. Not a Bond fan, but I find it hard to accept anyone but him as Bond.  Best Bond film by miles IMO is From Russia With Love, although the plot does creak a little now and then.   However, the best film I've seen Connery in is The First Great Train Robbery with Donald Sutherland.  The judge at his trial asks why he robbed the train "I wanted the money" was his cool reply!

Or ITV, as Cannon & Ball was a tv show for a Saturday night for 9 years for them.

In 1989 they were appearing at The Futurist in Scarborough.  Their cars were parked on the flat roof of the theatre, and our apartment over looked them.  Every night after the performance they would come out and get into their car. One night my daughter went down and got their autographs.

  6. Congratulations to Leeds, hope it doesn't adversely affect the crowds at Headingley (should there ever be crowds again)    Obviously despite 15 years of Leeds in a lower league, the needle between them an Man U hasn't disappeared.

The Macdonalds on Elland Road is the only one in the country (in the world?) with no red in its signage.  There used to be an advertising hoarding opposite the ground, and one of the sports shoe manufacturers was running a campaign to the effect "1966 was a great year for English sport - it was the year Eric was born!"    This obviously didn't go down well with some Leeds supporters, for there appeared there the graffiti "####" in large black letters.  The advert was quickly pasted over, with plain white. But that didn't stop the graffiti.  "Where's Eric?  ####!"  In even bigger black letters then appeared.  No love lost between Leeds and Man U.

  7. I was reading yesterday that Jack was a former miner, and during the big strike lent his car to the flying pickets.   Clearly true to his roots.  I remember him saying during an election that he intended to vote Labour. Unfortunately he played snooker at the local Con club and they banned him. Or clotched him as we say in Leeds! v

Another Mighty White taken by the a Good Lord.

I can only imagine that the a Good Lord wanted to strengthen the defence in his team of all white so took Norman and Trevor.  This now means that the Good Lord can make a tactical change and move John Charles up front.

I've only just discovered he' died. I'm not much of a soccer fan, but always look for Leeds's result.  This goal epitomised Cherry's never say die attitude.

People nowadays think living the Rock n Roll lifestyles is just about how much cocaine they can snort, the guys who were in the Rock n Roll era, really knew how to party safely. That's why many of the greats survived until they were 60, 70, 80. IMO

85 Jerry Lee!  Greatest white rocker of the lot.  His version of What'd I Say is better than the Ray Charles original IMO.

Little Richard 87 apparently has passed away.

One of my rock heroes.  There's probably only Jerry Lee left.  Last time I saw him on TV he didn't look so spry either.  Jerry Lee,  Little Richard, Chuck Berry,  Elvis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly were the true Kings of Rock and Roll.  Without them there'd have been no Stones or Beatles.

  11. A hard man, but then every side had its hard man. Hunter wasn't unique.  He was part of Revie's Leeds family , which is shrinking.  John Giles in his autobiography says the only people he really feels comfortable with (aside from family) are his former Leeds team mates.  Well there's one less today.

Wow that brings back memories . My granda was a Geordie , he adored Bobby Thompson and as a kid he never tired of telling me

He was a really funny man, and not that hard to understand.  But he like Frank Randle was adjudged by those running the theatres to be unsuitable for anyone south of Nottingham.

    Kenny Rogers (81) Just announced

As a card player his line from The Gambler "you never count your money while you're sitting at the table, there'll be time enough for counting when the last deal is done"  has always been my maxim.  Well Kenny the last deal is done lad.

Extremely knowledgeable about British music hall comedy.  Not just the nationally famous but regionally famous acts like Frank Randle, and Bobby (The Little Waster) Thompson.  Two men I find funny even today.  A sad loss.   I wonder if Archie Shuttleworth (his part in Corrie) is doing the funeral.

  15. Things Can Only Get Worse - John O'Farrell

Whatever your politics, worth a read.

HIs description of Theresa May as "someone who rose without trace" is not only funny, but exactly the nail on the head.

His description of his adventures when standing for Labour at Maidenhead in the 2001 General Election is really funny.  Driving along the main street of Maidenhead in a rusty old Sierra with a tannoy on the roof with his parents. His father put the microphone to his ear and said "hello" his mother then said "no darling it's not a telephone, you speak into it - tell them to vote for John"  which provoked "Don't fooking tell me what to do!"

As he sardonically says, it's hard to see why he lost.
