I wouldn’t pick Oldezki either. The first 5mins of the GF planeted that seed with me when Lomax waltzed passed for the opening Lees try.

Only three changes from the Samoa game - Bateman for McMeeken and probably Ackers for Lees. I’d start Thompson with Burgess on the bench - thought we lost a bit of intensity and punch when both Hill and Burgess rotated with Cooper and Thompson in Newcastle.

    1. Tomkins 2. Young 3. Watkins 4. Farnworth 5. Makinson 6. Welsby 7. Williams

    8. Hill 9. McIllorum 10. Thompson 11. Bateman 12. Whitehead 13. Radley

    Subs: 14. Cooper 15. Burgess 16. Knowles 17. Ackers

Thompson only came on in the second half, lees and cooper were first on for hill and burgess. I think wane will use the same tactic again, keeping the third prop fresh to lift us when the opposition middles are flagging. Thats why i think he'll go 3 props and Knowles again on the bench. He'll then use Radley as back up 9 when mcillorum is withdrawn. Tomkins, Welsby and Williams all jump in at 9 during the game to preserve mcillorum, Tomkins especially patrols round the ruck more than ever, and also kicks the ball as much as the halves

  2. My prediction is Tomkins gets a rest with Welsby moving to 1 and Sneyd at 7. Whitehead or Watkins being the other rested, with Pearce Paul in. I'd guess at Watkins.

    1 Welsby

    2 Young 3 Pearce Paul 4 Farnworth 5 Hall

    6 Williams 7 Sneyd

    8 Burgess 9 Mcillorum 10 Hill

    11 Bateman 12 Bachelor

    13 Radley

    14 Ackers 15 Oledzki 16 Thompson 17 Whitehead/Watkins

  3. 1 Tomkins

    2 Makinson  3 Farnworth 4 Watkins 5 Young

    6 Welsby 7 Williams

    8 Hill 9 Mcillorum 10 Thompson

    11 Whitehead 12 Mcmeeken

    13 Radley

    14 Sneyd 15 Burgess 16 Knowles 17 Lees/Cooper

    18 Lees/Cooper

19 Pearce Paul covering for Mcmeeken injury

I think he'll go with that, Williams has covered 9 before, and Welsby covers all the back line.

  4. I feel Currie and Clark are off the radar due to Warrington poor season, surprised mcshane not in either. Salford stronger finish to season has pushed 1 or 2 of their players ahead of others.

Due to minimal international fixtures, especially against the best, ie Australia, over the last few years, we'll not know if the players selected are good enough individually or as a team until its too late, ie the tournament has started. Fingers crossed theres something for us to cheer about

  5. Sometimes a bit of brilliance is needed, Connors last outings v New Zealand in the home series were excellent, forming a top partnership with makinson. Where did that momentum of that series fizzle out to. A maverick like Connor can be a winning selection or a dumb choice, but sometimes the gamble pays off, there's a fine line, but I don't think we'll see it this time around. Conservative seems the order of the day

Your probably right but I wouldn’t have him anywhere near an England shirt.

Me neither to be honest, I just don't think he's at international standard. There's no zip from him at 9, but I think wane will go for, in his eyes, the safe option of who he knows

Team for first game V Samoa.

    1.Welsby 2.Makinson 3.Farnworth 4.Watkins 5.Young 6.Tomkins 7.Sneyd 8.Oledzki 9.Leeming 10.Thompson 11.Radley 12.Whitehead 13 Knowles

    14.Burgess 15.Batchelor 16.McMeekin 17.Lewis

I've a feeling mcillorum will start with leeming off the bench, wane likes his no nonsense tough customers, and looking at that pack you've selected it's full of them

I'm sure it'll be an unpopular opinion on here but might be a blessing in disguise to have no Lomax. He's been fantastic in Super League for a number of years but every time I've seen him play against Australia he just looks like a rabbit in the headlights.

Let's hope some of the less experienced youngsters aren't caught in the headlights, having not experienced international level rugby league regularly at the highest level, never mind playing in a world cup on home soil.

never proved at international or nrl level - very overrated sl player wrong side of 28 now- would be eaten alive by munster and cleary -saints will hail him as a legend though - far from it

And that's exactly where England are at, lomax does a great job for the saints, but has he ever really been tested, test after test, series after series. To be fair, none of the current squad have, regular internationals against quality opposition find out and test the best. It probably isn't lomaxs fault, he just does his business for the saints anyway

old mother hubbard had more choices than sean wane - we are really gonna pay for the lack of development and investment over the last decade in this wc

I hope we're both wrong and England as a team do themselves proud, but the lack of internationals, especially against Australian standard quality has pushed us back I fear. There just doesn't look like any world class superstar players jumping out that we've always had to win us the big games, too many mediocre players at international level

  11. Regular international matches produce and find out who are at international standard as players. Most of these in the squad are untried as a team, or haven't played together internationally for an age.

I wonder if the growth of the game international match wise has been discussed by img as a proposal or is a 2 legged challenge cup round  their idea of expanding the game globally and a better solution for the development of international standard players.

Looking at the above squads being selected, the cupboard looks rather bare.

  12. if its true im a little disappointed regarding Jake Emmitt I thought he'd done ok for a young lad. Plus it leaves Saints a bit light on prop forwards next season

Graham, Perry, LMS, Frodsham.... occasionally Puletua.

I'd be much happier reading Cas are in talks with Gardner/Meli/Flannery/Dean

occasionally puletua? even more occasionally frodsham, cant remember when he last played 1st team, or even put a shirt on!!

  13. The England fall-out squad so far is:

    Tom Briscoe (Hull FC)

    Jodie Broughton (Salford City Reds)

    Sam Burgess (South Sydney)

    Tony Clubb (Harlequins RL)

    Jamie Langley (Bradford Bulls)

    Andy Lynch (Bradford Bulls)

    Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook (Harlequins RL)

    Nick Scruton (Bradford Bulls)

    Michael Shenton (Castleford Tigers)

    Paul Sykes (Bradford Bulls)

    Joe Westerman (Castleford Tigers)

    Kirk Yeaman (Hull FC)

who from this lot do you think will be in the final 24 man squad. a lot of just average super league players here for my liking. id say 3 or 4 at most. also whys widdop not been announced, melbourne arent in the play offs, an he looked a better option than some of the above.

  14. Jesus H Jones a man commits a tackle that could put another player in a wheelchair for life and you repeatedly create a thread about a half hearted kick to the shin. Totally pointless and a stupid thing to do but get a grip and talk some sense.

firstly the thread was repeated accidently, and i gather you condone kicking someone whether it be half hearted or not. i also dont condone spear tackles.

  15. ian millward had loads of success at saints as head coach and also had a head coach role at wigan, 2 of super leagues glamour coaching jobs yet only got a sniff over in austailia as an assistant coach. think it was at north queensland and canberra.

i dont think the aussies give much recognition to coaches who have done well in the english super league, daniel anderson being a slight exception, i just think they dont regard the english super league as being anything special.
