  1. Considering the disruption and indiscipline for FC that second try was a long time coming.
  2. There's always a few at the CC Final, I don't know if the GF is the same draw to northern union fans, not Northern Union.
  3. Etihad, England 60 - 3 Uruguay att. 50,778. Capacity 53,400 Meanwhile at Old Trafford Leeds 22 - 20 Wigan att. 73,512 a sell out.
  4. You don't appeal to the national company, you go to the local managers. Remember when Leigh were once sponsored by I think it was Vodafone, it was just the local shop not the national company. You can operate locally with major national companies. It really is about spotting and maximizing every single and simple opportunity.
  5. Although posted in jest, this is very true for clubs like Barrow. Just let it be known that and advertising banner is available in that spot to the local supermarkets could generate a bit of competitive bidding, Tesco obviously wanting to pay to not have the banner and rivals wanting to blank out Tesco and get their name in the frame. The money generated may not be massive in the scheme of things, but get the local press also onto the story and there could be other benefits. In fact create a story about it even if you don't sell the space. It is just such an opportunity. I am sure I have seen other examples of this sort of thing but can't remember where.
  6. Do people remember when the union mob tried to engage in a bit of warfare by playing an England game in Manchester at the same time as the Grand Final at OT, they lost out on all counts.
  7. He was very influential in starting the game in France, will that do as a starter?
  8. What have the players you mentioned done positively for the game since they retired.
  9. I am not saying players shouldn't be allowed the naming honour but it should be for off field activities. As a player is rewarded by receiving the trophy he has already had a playing achievement noted.
  10. Watching CC Barrow v Oldham on Red Button, I noticed behind one end of Barrow's ground is a huge Tesco Extra getting free publicity, advertising. Should Barrow have screened off that end in some way to block out the Tesco sign, then offered to take it down for a price or even flog the screening to ASDA or Sainsbury's etc. They my have got some money out of Tesco, but I doubt it. Any other examples where grounds offer free publicity.
  11. The awards were also created/named for what contribution these people made off the pitch not on it. The good thing about that is that people who are not the 'stars' get recognition. I am warming to the 10 year cycle idea, but would add that it should not be a player, unless they made an outstanding contribution on following retirement.
  12. I made the point earlier that I disagreed for this very reason, but we are were we are and I can see why its done before the season starts.
  13. I think doing it now is based on getting it done before the season starts so that any references to the award for the next GF use the new name rather than the old, otherwise up until the GF talk will be of who might win the HS Trophy and then it disappears and isn't awarded.
  14. I must confess to playing a bit of devil's advocate here. I went to a talk by Tony Collins a couple of years ago about this very subject, and a follow up about racism in RL in which this subject was obviously a large part. He has done a large amount of research into the Sunderland, Francis relationship, which he was due to publish in a book about Roy Francis. Unfortunately the book has been delayed, he was waiting for the latest census data to be released so he could do more background research, and the last I heard it had thrown up some complexities around Roy Francis' early years (the book is more than just about a few years at Wigan). Tony had a really convincing case, but, there is as always a but, it would probably pass in a civil court but maybe fail in a criminal court, and as has been shown here the counter arguments are not difficult to construct.
  15. Maybe Sunderland didn't get on with the Welsh, Emlyn Jenkins a stand-off who Wigan signed from Salford had only played 18 games for Wigan (Francis 12) when he decided to retire, at the age of 27, following Sunderland's arrival, though he did sign for Keighley a month later. Jenkins was a former Cardiff player from Treherbert in the Rhonda.
  16. Strange photo to set up if you don't want to associate with 'them'.
