it's great to see this stuff. i saw half a dozen peacock butterflies on Sunday and the same number of peacock birds! I think peacock butterflies are one of the species which overwinters as an imago, and the ones we see early in Spring are usually these ones, rather than ones which have been developing this year and have emerged from eggs, caterpillars or pupae...

IIRC small tortoiseshells and brimstones are the same. I'll have to look it up.

Keep your eyes open for bats. Some warmth and still weather really brings them out.

Was cycling home just as it was getting dark on Wednesday evening. Had a barn owl and several bats for company.

    Fantastic picture that, thanks.

Hull FC's then chairman Roy Waudby alongside coach Arthur Bunting.

For me, Roy will always be the most passionate Hull FC fan that was also chairman of the club.

Sadly, he passed away in his sleep during the nightmare of the David Lloyd period, probably worrying about the future of Hull FC in his hands.

    Now they were grim times.

Great to see Arthur chomping on his trademark cigar.

His teams could play a bit too.

Aye, I remember that. I think the TJ wanted to keep it 0-0 at that point.

Workington missed two kicks? Or just one?

In keeping with the 'zero' element, it's also one of only a couple of games where there was an admission but I didn't have to pay. We were guests, via the club chaplin, of the Whitehaven board.

In the garden, the bullfinches were very vociferous yesterday; we had at least three calling simultaneously.  For such a boldly and brightly coloured bird, their call - though distinctive and hence easily recognisable when you have taught yourself it - is really very thin and insipid.

One visited our garden the other day. Never seen one anywhere in Hull before never mind in our garden. Wonder if the reduction in traffic and air pollution levels is leading some species to be a bit more adventurous.

  5. My son started showing symptoms last weekend. He had a pretty rough couple of days and by Monday he had lost all sense of taste and smell. I spoke to him yesterday and he said he was feeling fine now. I asked him if his sense of taste and smell had returned. The conversation went something like this:

    "Can you taste anything yet?"

"I can taste beer and spicy food."

    "Anything else?"

    "I haven't tried anything else."

Round here you'll find someone is doing the shopping for several people living in sheltered accommodation. One person over in Cheshire doing the same thing has been abused by other shoppers for panic buying. So much so this chap is now carrying a letter of authorisation!

I see the reference above to panic buying of freezers but would ask if its OK to panic buy motorcycles?

I'm maintaining my usually practice of self-isolation by cycling round the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wolds. Most of the time I'm several thousand metres away from the nearest human being.
