A few bird species experience a phenomenon called an 'irruption' from time to time.  What happens is that a good breeding season is followed by a bad winter for food.  So huge numbers of the species in question migrate away from their breeding area, where normally most would happily also winter.

One species prone to this behaviour is the spectacularly colourful waxwing.  I was lucky enough to see a few in Hampshire and Wiltshire when they 'irrupted' a few years ago.

Apparently, this winter it is happening again and, sure enough, I see that they have got as far south and west in this country as Hampshire (and perhaps further)  A group of over twenty are spending time in Fleet, in East Hampshire, with smaller groups seen in Basingstoke and Romsey in the last couple of days.

I am sure there will have been significant numbers of them turning up across Yorkshire, especially in the East Riding, as they will have come across the North Sea from northern, continental Europe.  Has anybody been lucky enough to see any?  Here is the link to the RSPB page about them:

Not been lucky enough to see any but they're well known for turning up in the car park at Sainsbury's in Hessle on Hull's western outskirts.

Bumped into Vince before the 2017 RL Cup Final.

I asked him "Is it true that if you can find an unsigned copy of your book, it's probably worth a fortune?"

His mates enjoyed his uncomfortable moment.

I must admit, after reading through two hundred pages I was disappointed with the ending.

I recall reading somewhere that he was all set to sign for Hull FC in the early 80's, they'd even line a job up at a local hospital,  but it fell through for some reason.  Who knows? Union players presumably would spread rumours about signing RL to get a better deal from their clubs, and RL teams spread them to sell season tickets.  In those days when if was all cloak and dagger, there's no way of telling.

It was actually 1976 and word had got around that he'd got a job at Hull Royal (my mate's dad worked in the hospital works department and he told me Williams was on his way). In Vince Groak's excellent book "Last One Out...", former Hull director Mike Page confirmed it was a "done deal" but when Williams was on his way up to sign the contract he stopped and called his dad. Whatever was said was enough to get him to change his mind and head for home.

There's some 'football' scores there. Must have been some tense games with them scores and great atmospheres.

Seems really strange to think now that as kids we'd open our presents then leg it down to the Boulevard or do the two bus journey to Craven Park for an 11am kick off on Christmas morning.

I like the New Year’s Day concert from Vienna as a nice relaxing entry into the New Year.

I don’t often put aside time to listen to classical music but I always do if possible on this day at this time.

    Uplifting for the soul.

Always reminds my of my dad. He wasn't a huge classical music fan but he loved it.

Andy Murray has a voice boring enough to extricate a group of priests out of Ireland's most extensive lingerie department. But he's actually a very funny and intelligent guy.

I like his sense of humour.

Partly because a lot of it goes straight over the heads of the people who ask the questions.
