  1. All fans are biased to their own team, the question is a stupid one to ask.

One of my favourite ever exchanges between fans was when Wakey were playing at Odsal a few years back and this old guy was sitting in the stand and was screaming blue murder for every Bradford forward pass/knock-on - which he is entitled to do of course (but I think there was a bit of an element of winding up the opposition fans as well!). Whenever the Bulls fans did the same of course the outrage on his face was clear for all to see - I honestly think the guy thought that Wakey had never infringed on a single law of the game in the past 50 years.

A few people were winding him up and he was giving a bit back. Eventually Wakey were pulled up for a genuine forward pass - after the traditional cry of "FORRRRWARD" from the Bulls faithful. The old guy got up out of his seat and just shouted "You're all Biased!" and left.

    Couldn't make it up! :D

  2. That's what I was saying, its been done in it worked, move on.

That is why I said the club needs some fresh thinking, I think the club allowed itself to stagnate by concentrating too much on want went on on the pitch without realising what had got people their in the first place had become tired and outdated.

Success totally blinds a clubs management.

Of course - what I was saying is that it's easier said than done.

  3. Have Bradford got the names and addresses of all the missing supporters from the terraces, after 15 years Bradford should have a good database of nearly everyone who has been into Odsal, are the club using this to chase up fans?

Wigan have gone back to some simple poster campaigning, local stores such as Sainsbury's having a poster at the entrance, probably in exchange for a small add spot in the program a very low cost highly visual bit of product placement. You don't need to be a great marketing guru to come up with that one.

And that's fine for Wigan - not because they are "rich", because they have an audience that is inherantly interested in Rugby League. I'm not saying Bradford isn't, but in my experience, Bradford is the one area in "the heartlands" where RL is embrased the least. People are becoming more and more apathetic towards the club and the area in general - and that's only going to get worse as people of my generation (I'm mid-20s) can't get out of there fast enough, at least in my experience. Bradford could get Max Clifford in and it wouldn't do a jot of difference - the only thing that would count would be the results on the pitch.

Plus - with the whole "bullmania" thing, I'm reminded of the linefrom Futurama - "You've seen it - you can't unsee it". IE - It's not a draw for folk anymore because it's been done to death and not just by the Bulls. It's very hard to reinvent something like that - the trick is when it is done well it looks incredibly easy and obvious.

  4. I'm not popping at Peter Hood either, he did inherit one hell of a mess and who would want to be Chairman of Bradford Bulls anyway? We need to remember he is there because nobody else wanted it.

Yep totally agree. I have a lot of time for him, even though a lot of "fans" don't.

Great response generally by the way. Really interesting to have a well thought out viewpoint from that side of things :)

  5. Would you change things though?

Is the 'mess' now a price worth paying for the success in the intervening period? Providing that the mess isn't the death knell that Errol is suggesting, I think it probably is.

Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. (OK - better to still be loving, but you get the point).

Sure I would change things - I still think the club could have planned better for the future and attained the success they did rather than live soully for the moment. There is no reason why they couldn't have done both IMO - although again the benefit of hindsight is a glorious thing.

  6. Well thought out post Errol - and whilst I don't agree with it all, I at least see where you are coming from and your concerns are genuine.

In answer to the question "What would you have done differently in 2006 if you were chairman" the answer I suspect most people - including myself - would give is "not much". Not for want, or because I because I don't have the ambition it's because I wouldn't have the resources to impliment them - as Peter Hood hasn't had.

It's so easy to say with hindsight that McNamara should have gone in year x/y/z - but the reality of the situation is that you'd have to pay the guy off with money the club presumably doesn't have spare. I suppose one thing I realistically would have done was not give Macca such a long contract - but then again if I'd personally known the guy and what he does day to day I would have felt differently.

Same with "hiring more PR people" etc - which is a common criticism of the club. I'm not saying that isn't valid, but at the same time you can't pay people with good intentions. It's a catch 22 situation, because lack of cash flow is preventing implimenting something that would eventually increase the cash flow!

The thing is, I can't realistically think of anything in that four year period that could be changed to drastically turn around our fortunes. Every decision that has come out of the club in the past four years I haven't always agreed with, but I have understood why it has been done. Indeed if I had the power to go back and change things, you'd have to go back to 1997ish to stop the club getting in this mess in the first place.

Let me turn this around on you Errol and ask what would bring you back (you say you shredded your season ticket - do you go to any games)? I ask because as someone with seemingly so much passion for the club, it slightly seems as if you are cutting your nose off to spite your face - for want of a better phrase. Please don't think I'm having a pop, but as a passionate fan of the club myself, I think it would take a lot more than the lazy performances of late for me to pack it in, so I'm interested to see your take on it.

  7. I really do think this topic should end once and for all now Tommy lad..

Had the article been written after a decision cost the GF - years ago - it would have some credence and relevance.

However, there is not one aspect of the club today that has been caused by any refereeing decisions.

We are where we are because we have the worst coach in the clubs SL history - in charge for 4 years.

I thought the article was extremely badly timed and irrelevant to the current crisis - a crisis which none of the club management are able to address.

When a team repeatedly under performs over such a long time - it really is time to quit popping at the refs - it just makes us look stupid (in my humble opinion)

Fair points - but to give the T&A article a chance - at it's heart, it is absolutely nothing to do with the Bulls at all. It's a genuine discussion of the way the Refs operate within our game with the spark being a real, albiet small, incident in a local game as, after all, it is appearing in the local paper. It's sad that most of the people commenting on the T&A site seem to think it's a big "Refs hate Bradford rant" when in reality - whether you agree with the points or not - it deserves much better than that.

  8. You clearly haven't read it properly, Mick. Connor Murphy does indeed make good points, but says the Bulls have suffered as much as anyone else - ie we haven't had the brunt of it, all clubs have suffered at the hand of bad refs calls. As such the thread title is misleading (IMO anyway) and is slightly unfair on the T&A article, which in reality says nothing of the sort

  9. Any particular reason this is being played on the Friday? I would have gone if it had been on Sat/Sun like all Quins other games (not that we have much grounds to complain, Quins fans must get frustrated every other week when they play away). I know it's been this way since the fixtures were announced.

The only thing I can think of is the World Cup final - which is a bit of a poor do considering that game kicks off at night doesn't it?

  10. I've never seen a team have to do so little to get a win as Hull did yesterday. Seriously, I mean talk about gifting someone the win. The first FC try, the Bulls players were tackling themselves FFS! Apart from the last try (which was spectacular by the way) they never properly threatened and the Bulls just utterlly collapsed from the start.

The team did superbly to get back to a draw IMO - it was a completely different Bulls side who came out in the second half but the last try for Hull really was the gamebreaker - which was strange as there was plenty of time left to get the win, but it took all the wind out of the Bradford sails. Gutting - yesterday sums up the past two years for me.

Also - what a lot of bizzare decisions by the ref and his assitants yesterday (for both sides before anyone starts). From Hull getting the tap on the 20, despite Tansey apparrently touching the ball before it went out in the opening sets - to the Touch Judge apparently overrulling a decision the in goal ref had made despite the touchy being about 40 meters away and the in goal fella 2 meters. Then the decision out of the blue to give the Bulls a penalty for Hull not playing the ball properly in the first half! You can't tell me every other PTB was correct in that game, so why blow for that? I'm not saying these decisions affected the outcome of the game at all - but it needs to be pointed out - the decisions weren't wrong because they were going against us or anything - they were just downright mad a lot of the time!

  11. ...you dont think 8 years old would be keen?

Maybe, but the problem is how many 8 year olds actually read the mag? They are better served by matchday programmes for that sort of thing. Plus now the mag is properly bound, it's a lot harder to "pull out"!

When RLW used to do the pull out posters it was a jack of all trades mag, and consequently was a master of none. It instantly reduces the gravitas of the mag in the readers mind, regardless of the rest of the actual content. It would be ok if RL had a "Match" style mag, as that's where you would expect posters of football stars - after all you don't see posters of players in Four Four Two. Of course RL is nowhere near popular enough to sustain that sort of kids mag.

Since they got rid of the posters and the like, RLW is a much more focused and considered magazine - and all the better for it (IMO). I'm sure if John has a massive outpouring weeping for their return, they would be back. I wouldn't hold your breath though as I think it is the first and only time it has been brought up.
