  1. If you missed it, get on the iPlayer and watch 'Cunk on Shakespeare'. The writing and Diane Morgan's delivery are superb and it is so damn funny!

Agreed. I was never a fan of Cunk's "Moments of Wonder" on Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe and was baffled as to why people loved that bit. After last night, I'll gladly admit I was wrong. Howling with laughter.

  2. The Almost Impossible Game Show on ITV2. Baffling.

Imagine 'Total Wipeout' crossed with 'Shooting Stars' on a fraction of the budget, and with the voiceover duties taken by a sweary Irish hip-hop comedy duo.

Not as funny as it ought to be. Still, diverting.

I make no apologies about how much I laugh at this - almost all of it at the narration though which really does elevate it above the dross it actually is (in fact in most episodes they refer to how awful the show is).

Slightly higher brow - the latest series of Better Call Saul has been an absolute masterclass in slow burn drama. The latest episode bringing events to a head nicely before the final episode in the season next week.

  3. That brings me neatly to my big grumble about modern telly. It's exclusively on Virgin. Then you have Man in the High Castle that's exclusively on Amazon Prime. Then you have the Netflix exclusives. Then the Sky exclusives. Then the BT exclusives. FFS... if I had to subscribe to everything to get the programmes I wanted to watch then my monthly bill would be around £200. No wonder people pirate TV programmes.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens here - I've got Netflix which has some decent exclusives but the only one where I've been annoyed I've not had the service to watch the show is Fear The Walking Dead on BT - having seen it since I don't know what I was bothered about. However Netflix won't be the market leader forever and it'll be interesting to see what happens as the market gets more saturated every year - big year next year for Amazon who are clearly going all out with the new not quite Top Gear.

Actually some of my favourite shows this year have been Netflix exclusives - the latest being Jessica Jones, strong Buffy and Angel vibes but a lot darker.

  4. She left the News Quiz to get involved with a new political party before the General Election.

It failed to make a dent in the public consciousness, so she's either dropped that altogether, or QI is less time-consuming than the News Quiz.

To be fair, she left the News Quiz after the election and her party didn't elect a leader until July - I think they are focused on 2020 rather than the one just gone.

  5. That rather belies her stated reason for quitting the New Quiz does it not? Although, I guess the time given over to QI may not be as great as that to the News Quiz over the year. How many series of QI do they make a year? Frankly, given the frequency of repeats, I've pretty much given up on trying to ascertain whether I've watched each episode before or not (and I never even watch Dave).

They only make one series a year (new series starts on Friday) - I think they are all filmed over a period of 2-3 weeks though

  6. I found it quite boring to be honest. I think we must be reaching saturation point on the superhero front, all the storylines blend into one these days. I tried watching the latest Marvel offering with Agent Carter and apart from the busty, sexy woman playing Carter there's a pretty weak storyline.

Boring is the last word I would use to describe Daredevil, but each to their own and all that. It's certainly the least superhero-y of the majority of things out there and uses it's format well to study the characters in a way most of the movies don't/won't. The Kingpin is actually the first villain in the Marvel side you actually get to know a bit about his motivations. I think it's the only tv series from both DC and Marvel in the past few years that has been worth watching anyway, but can understand why it isn't everyone's cup of tea

  7. I haven't properly engaged with 'New' Simpsons in a long time, but this still makes me sadder than it should. He's clearly had enough, and is one of the only voice actors on that seems to voice the - hardly controversial - opinion that it's no longer as good as it once was.

The first 10 years of the show include some of the funniest comedy I've ever seen on TV. It looks like the show is going to go on though - even though it still does have the occasional hit episode, it's sad to see one of the best shows ever (at one time) limp on towards death.

  8. Channel 4's 'Ballot Monkeys' made a promising start last night, despite having to introduce 4 separate sets of characters.

A decent cast and writers who are experienced at inserting last-minute topical lines (as they did on 'Drop the dead Donkey'). And the joke about Tony Blair and the Chilcot Enquiry... if it was a joke!

    More bite than 'Newzoids', certainly.

Yes - I really enjoyed this. Some very cutting lines certainly - I thought it could have gone either way before it aired, but I should have known with the writers involved and some of the cast that we were in safe hands. Ben Miller as the Lib Dem constantly referencing Foinavon was very good.

More of this kind of thing please.

  9. The BBC are currently recording a series based on the first book, due to be broadcast later this year. Peter Kay is playing Danny's dad, so it'll be interesting to hear his take on the Sarf Lahndan accent.

A semi-contemporary of his was fellow music journo Mark Ellen, and his book 'Rock Stars stole my Life!' is also very funny and revealing.

No information yet on Danny's next volume, probably because the TV series is taking up a lot of his time. Titles he has suggested in the past are either A Pith Helmet full of Saveloys or Fifty Years a Chinaman... so it won't be called either of those.

I do like Peter Kay, but I'm wondering if he can do Spud justice. Hopefully so, as it could well be a great series.

According to Amazon Vol 3 is out end of next year and carrying on the "Going..." titles, "Going Round The Bend" - though I do quite like the others suggested, even though they'll never see the light of day!

  10. For those of you who enjoyed Danny Baker's 'Going to Sea in a Sieve', you might be interested to know that the second instalment of his autobiography is out next week (25th Sept).

If it's only half as good as the first one it will still be well worth the cover price....

Finally gotten around to reading this – certainly as good as the first one, in fact I think I’ve laughed more at this one – the yarn early in the book about the family tortoise had me properly chortling. Just read the section on Gazza and I’m not sure what to think really – it was quite touching in a way although the implication that he was quick to embrace the story of his tragic downfall, when he was weary to accept his meteoric rise is rather sad, but telling in its own way.

Anyway, great book as expected, will be sad when it’s over.

  11. The gore has definitely gone up a level - I've always found it quite cartoonish on this show, which given it's comic book origins is understandable - but the scene in the revolving door last week was quite graphic by the standards of the show. Can't wait for the last one - the spinoff looks interesting too, although maybe stretching the premise a bit too far?

  12. Weren't Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow on it last year in the run up to the cup final? Don't know in what depth as I didn't see it, but Clare has never been shy about her admiration for RL. Struck me as quite impressive considering BT have no obligation to cover the game.

  13. 'Let's play Darts for Comic Relief' has been entertaining throughout. I want to see this as an annual event.

Agreed. Really enjoyed the final - think Tim Vine folded a bit under the pressure but was a fun watch. Best moment of the tournament overall was Bob Mortimer's walk on performance!

  14. 'House of Fools' last night - very silly indeed. :D

Yes! Love this show - went to see a couple of this most recent series being filmed - an absolute joy to see Vic & Bob up close.

The Jeremy "Clakson" lookalike had me howling last night! (Although The Bradford Butcher sounded suspiciously like he was from St Helens...!)

  15. I think Bradford City are playing their next FA cup game on Feb 15 at home. I wonder if it will have any affect on people who might be going to Leigh for the first game?

I don't think it'll have too big an impact to be honest - we've clashed with City before in recent seasons without to big an impact either way. I think the two things in our favour although City did well in the last round it isn't the most amazing draw they could have had, and we are away. I think if we'd have been playing at Odsal that day and they had drawn Man U it would be different. Away games are pretty much the die hards - not saying there isn't crossover but not as much.
