I remember Wire drawing Chorley away in the Challenge Cup. Doug was MP for Warrington North and his son was MP for Chorley.

They innocently wandered around the perimeter of the pitch at half time and got an impromptu standing ovation on all 4 sides of the ground. It was absolutely lovely to see.

I really hope there's some footage of it somewhere.

Sam will be returning to and staying in Australia after he completes his time gaining necessary coaching experience at Warrington.

Plenty of giants of British rugby league moved to and stayed in Australia. Not everyone who ever played for an Australian club, but many. For example, Dick Huddart, Cliff Watson, Tommy Bishop, and of course Sky's former much loved employee Mike Stephenson -- formerly of  of Dewsbury and now of Palm Beach, Sydney.

Cliff Watson (below) was one of the great British Test props. He played for Cronulla Sharks alongside Tommy Bishop, in 1971-73. He died in the Cronulla area of Sydney, in May 2018, at age 78.

St Helens icon Dick Huddart (pictured below on the right with Mike Stephenson), was one of the greatest second row forwards to have ever played the game. He died in Australia in 2021 at the age of 85.

Tommy Bishop, an icon of the Cronulla Sharks club, is still alive and hugely respected by the management and fans of the Cronulla team for which he played with Cliff Watson.  Below we see him being embraced in the club dressing room after a match against South Sydney, by a new brilliant Cronulla half back, Nicho Hines, in 2022

You need to stop typing your opinion as fact. If you do, I’ll refrain from calling you a forum troll.

And all sl sides should automatically be the away team.

Let's go to some new grounds and give some clubs a decent payday.

    I couldn't agree more.

I'm sure all SL fans have anticipated the cup draw and hoped for a new place to visit. Instead we get Wigan in the draw every year despite playing them at least twice a season.

I'm old enough to have watched Wire at York, Batley, Hunslet, Keighley etc in challenge cup (and old 1st div) games. They are all great days out and they are the lifeblood of the sport. We need more of that to keep everyone interested and to keep the sport alive.

I've just remembered another game. Chorley away. It must have been a challenge cup fixture. The landlord of the pub we went to said he had no idea what was coming and had sold out of everything except pop and whisky. True story.

Do any other Wire fans recall being there?

    Lindsay
Hoyle (Chorley MP) and his Dad Doug (Warrington North MP) walked around the perimeter at half time and got a spontaneous round of applause as they went round.

  4. Very impressed with Mike Eccles in his post-match interview.

Honest, realistic and proud. What a thoroughly decent bloke.

I sincerely hope London come back soon as a competitive force in SL. I've enjoyed every single trip to watch Wire there over the years at various cuckoo nests. I thought Ealing would work but that's another story.

I wish them nothing but good luck and maybe another massive benefactor.

  5. Irish broadcaster RTE just released a documentary about my favourite band of all time, the Hothouse Flowers.

I can't explain how emotional I feel after watching it. To me they are a smashing band that I've been following live since 1990, but now I've just spent an hour with wild, uncontrollable goosebumps and it means even more.

I think this story could extrapolate to a thousand bands who have stuck together over many years. It's a great story of friendship and loyalty and all sorts of positive things.

To quote one of their best songs, the documentary and the story are a real 'Thing of Beauty'.

  6. He once stepped off the pitch and walked amongst the away fans at Belle Vue after a particularly bad Wire performance.

He just walked through the away fans, chatting and apologising. I've never seen anything like it.

Massive respect, he didn't hide and actually did the opposite.

The show moves ever onwards. It will never be the same as the old days, but when you listen to the older shows, they are also flawed. When they book people who "get" ISIHAC, it lives again. Tony Hawks singing "Girlfriend in a Coma" to the tune of "Tiptoe through the Tulips" is a personal favourite of the modern era. Plus Jeremy Hardy singing anything at all.

I genuinely thought of you when I posted it, Futtocks 🙂

It was such good fun. Yes it might seem dated but if you fill a theatre full of people and make them laugh until they cry for 3 hours then maybe don't analyse it and just let it be. There's no nastiness to it, no racism, no sexism, it is just daft and genuinely laugh-out-loud funny.

  8. See Karaoke thread above. Hollow Horse is always there, lurking at the back of the music bit of my head.

I have lots of earworms, but when Shane McGowan died I had "The Old Main Drag" in my head for weeks, along with "Rainy Night in Soho" that everyone else was playing.

After seeing Natalie Merchant live recently I had "King May" morning, noon and night in my head, which is a good thing.

"Sons and Daughters" by The Decemberists is a proper nuisance. I guarantee 100% that if you watch this video, you'll get an earworm that goes "Hear all the bombs, fade away....."

It all makes a nice change from The Wiggles and Teletubbies that get into your head when your kids are young. Apologies to young TRL parents if those things are still alive 😐

  9. Just got back from Leeds Grand Theatre where we watched a live recording of the iconic radio 4 panel show.

I don't think I've ever laughed out loud so much.

We got Jack Dee, Rory Bremner, Pippa Evans, Tony Hawks and Marcus Brigstocke.

Brigstocke stole the show for me but he was the most sweary so his stuff won't make the cut unless they are very clever with the editing.

Such good fun - totally inconsequential, silly, slapstick, harmless humour. British comedy at its best, loads of childish innuendo and referencing various people like Jeremy Hardy; in particular reeling out old Barry Cryer jokes because they were in Leeds.

I absolutely urge everyone to go and see this show if you can http://isihac.net/tour_dates.php

  10. I've only ever done karaoke in our kitchen, when my missus bought a really good machine that works with Spotify. It's surprisingly entertaining when there's a group get together and everyone has had a few.

My go-to tune is Hollow Horse by the Icicle Works. That's how old I am.

Be careful what you dream of, it may come up and surprise you*....

*One for John Drake and fellow greying/balding TRLers there 😉
