  1. I know we're going round in circles for the umpteenth time but this is key for me.  The RFL have put forward a system that puts all the focus on mediocrity - indeed it practically celebrates it.

And in doing so they have hammered the final nail in the Challenge Cup, taken away the lower tiers' only chances of genuine silverware, given up the community game and waved a white flag at international development.

    But, y'know, jeopardy.

    Sums the whole thing up.

  2. The 12 clubs of the Superleague and the 12 clubs of the Championship.

Championship 1 is going to be pretty unwieldy by the sounds of things but not much has been said about that league so far.

Wasn't there some mention of a regional component to Championship 1? (or some such wording)

I don't think there was an awful lot of attention given to the subject in the proposals document, tbh.

  3. exactly. where is Toulouse fitting in? I'm sorry, the whole thing is ludicrous.

BOLD PREDICTION: there will be another total "restructure" by 2017.

Funny how Oz league, which is absolutely thriving, doesn't have these endless "restructures"…

That last line crossed my mind as well. Couldn't we improve the NRL in a similar way? After a certain number of regular games the borrom 8 go off and play in a competition with the best 4 each from the NSW and Queensland Cups. The top eight of that go into next season's NRL.

That would certainly jeopardise things a little.

  4. It was proposed but opposed by the majority of fans.  It would have passed but two clubs, (St Mirren and Ross County from memory), voted against and so it failed.  The only place it's been tried is Switzerland who had it for about 10 years - dropping it because attendances for the middle teams hit rock bottom.

St Mirren and Ross County - and the rumours flying around at the time was that a certain club fae Govan - who were dead against the change - 'persuaded' the two to vote against.

And, talking about a certain club fae Govan  “There is no threat of Administration II. Categorically, there is no threat of Administration II.”

  5. Abou the 8 club Super League. I take the proposals of 12x2, 3x8 as being a recognition that there probably are about 8 clubs that are there or thereabouts in terms of being the right standard. I would think that this restructure is going to formalise this group over a number of seasons, so you are going to have a fairly fixed group of 8 elite clubs getting the biggest crowds, the largest amounts of central funding and sponsorship and, thus, the ability keep themselves at the top.

The rest will just be fighting it out for the right to play them each season.

  6. There was a separate women's FA for a long time.  I think that was because the FA wouldn't sanction women's matches.  Whether they had any moral objection or just couldn't be bothered I'm not sure.

Excellent results for the British women's teams in the Champions League yesterday, including Glasgow City taking a 2-2 draw in Belgium.

Big fan of Glasgow City.  Good to see some British clubs at least not be dependent on a men's set-up.

Yes, City have been successful. I thought they might have been in trouble when you-know-who set up women's sides but they seem to have survived reasonably well.

  7.

He does come across as a bit of a dinosaur on Radio Scotland's "Off The Ball" programme, advertised as "the most petty and ill-informed football programme on radio". On air, though, he is slapped down adequately by his co-presenter, Stuart Cosgrove.

Whatever humour he was trying to convey in the article, he just hasn't got the ability to get away with it. Total unacceptable.

Besides which, women's football in Scotland is at least giving us a little bit of success to cheer at the moment.

  8. How some clubs battle on heaven knows! Up in Scotland, Gretna F.C. rose to the giddy heights of the Premiership on the back of being bankrolled, only then to freefall into oblivion.

I watch a junior under elevens  side on Saturdays and get real enjoyment. Long may the hard work by dedicated people live on, although some clubs inevitably will fold.

Although Gretna are back as Gretna 2008 FC, currently playing in the Lowland Football League.

  9. Seems to compound the behaviour before its started, seems daft.

I work with a guy who's girl friend is from Belarus, they have all sorts of fun and games getting in and out.  We've been quite lucky with the draw, Belgium, Russia and Slovenia, although I think the 2500 mile round trip to Russia will put a few people off.

St Johnson fans seem to have it right, I just hope the minority of young idiots that pop up from time to time at Wigan don't ruin it for the rest of us, should, hopefully be a good atmosphere.

As an aside the other team from Wigan take on Bacup and Rossendale tonight, not sure how much of Rossendale is left in that merger given they play in Bacup, sad to see Rossendale go.

Have they merged? I didn't know about that, and it is a shame that United have gone. I hope, at least, that the merged club becomes stronger. I suppose it depends on how many fans are willing to transfer their allegiance.

  10. Whilst I appreciate it'll never be a problem for me in any subsequent seasons, this watching your team in Europe lark is hard work!

Wigans initial allocation of 1500 tickets for next weeks match in Brugge sold out in 2 hours, a further 2000 tickets have now been allocated, but before you can buy one seemingly you need to provide the club with travel and accomodation details at the request of the police.

Seems a crazy way of doing things, if you end up not getting a ticket but have travel booked are you not more likely to be wondering the bars of Brugge living up to the football fan sterotype?

Only other alternative seems to be booking on a coach leaving Wigan at 1am Thursday, going straight the game, then departing to arrive back in Wigan 8am Friday, that'll be fun!

Try being a St Johnstone fan! Last season we drew Eskisehirspor from Turkey in the Europa League and a couple of hundred Saintees went to the away leg. They were treated with great respect and hospitality by the town and football club, which was reciprocated when their fans visited Perth for the 2nd leg. Many friendships were forged between fans, and the two clubs have cemented their new relationship by wearing each other's kit design as their away strip this season.

This season the Saints drew the (relatively) mighty Rosenborg, and again both sets of fans had a great time visiting each other's cities (even if the beer over there was expensive.

Having won the tie the next round was against FC Minsk of Belarus - the authorities wouldn't let anybody have visas. They wouldn't even let the club use the nearest airport - as it shut for the day at 2pm!

  11. From the FA Cup final at the end of 2012/13 to the Extra Preliminary Round at the start of 2013/14, Wigan Robin Park, leading 2-1on the stroke of 90 minutes, lost 3-2 after 9 minutes of injury time.  Its funny watching teams at this level, at 2-2 there's no seeing the game out, its hell for leather to get a winner so you don't have to pay the other teams travel expenses in the event of a replay!

    Pics.

Great photos. I used to really enjoy this stage of "The Road To Wembley", although it did seem weird to be watching the FA Cup in August: at Rochdale involvement in the competition was usually confined to the month of November.

One match I do remember from the early 80s was Rossendale United (now sadly defunct) v Chorley. The FA had just introduced the automatic red card for a professional foul by the last defender on an attacker in a scoring position. Chorley's goalie committed the foul and was duly sent off. Whether the Chorley fans didn't know about the new ruling I don't know, but they were furious - there was an actual pitch invasion by some of the fans (well, two or three of them).
