  1. Bombay, makers of the well-known Sapphire gin, have introduced a London Dry gin. Available at Sainsbury's (my local branch at least) at £17 for a litre. It's pretty nice. The price is just an extra incentive.

I recently purchased a bottle of Tesco Finest London Dry Gin and was really taken by it. It's a very reasonable price and was very easy drinking. Some of the own brand stuff is really quite good.

Hendricks Gin is another I tried quite recently and enjoyed.

  2. I'm on the wrong thread! I should be on the "What are you listening to"

Because I'm listening to Bernard Cornwells " The Pagan Lord". I listen whilst Im driving and as at some point over the weekend I'm likely to finish it whilst I'm on the M6 ( Barrow v Swinton Saturday andOldham v Coventry on Sunday) I have already down loaded the last one in the same series "The empty throne" via Audible.

Good books, I do enjoy Bernard Cornwell's work.

  3. have you ever eaten it?Try it then tell me its not tasty .Are you being a food snob?

I think Futtocks knows his food. I find my stomach rumbling at the mere thought of some of his meal descriptions. If he ever starts an open kitchen with the folk from TRL invited for dinner I am straight on the train.

There's being a food snob and there's being someone who knows a lot about authentic good quality food.

  4. During the recent Amazon Black Friday week sale thing I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black whisky. I do not normally buy blended whisky but after reading that this has lots of Islay in it I thought at £25 a bottle I would give it a go.

I was actually pleasantly surprised, it's not a world beater but it's certainly very drinkable and one I would consider buying again.

  5. I'm due a tax refund of around £1500 on 23rd of December so I've already set aside a portion of it to treat myself to a 25yo Laphroaig.  Previously, when I was self-employed, when I got a contract signature and first payment against it I'd treat myself to a bottle of 18yo to celebrate.  Now I've taken my permanent job and got my first payment I'll be going large on the 25yo!

Hope you don't like it too much or is could be hard going back to the cheap stuff  ;)

  6. Caol Ila isn't my favourite but certainly a nice drink.  I definitely wouldn't refuse a drink of it if offered.

Lagavulin has a slightly different flavour from Laphroaig, 16yo is the best bang for your buck, as they say.  Younger than that can be a bit underwhelming if over-watered and rough if under, 16yo is very forgiving and lovely almost any way.

I need to find decent pub with a good range of whisky and spend a pleasant evening trying a few.

  7. I have some of the new Laphroaig Select, a bit light and not as meaty as proper Laphroaig.

    Ardbeg is overpriced these days.

What are your thoughts on Caol Ila or Lagavulin?

Perhaps I need to arrange a holiday to Scotland to continue my education.

  8. Not overly oppressed with Ardbeg 10 year old, not as good as Laphroaig or Bowmore. It's drinkable but lacking something.

I might have to splash out on one of the other Ardbegs such as the Uigeadail or Corryvreckan as they seem to be rated highly....if I can figure out how to pronounce them.

  9. have a you ever had a swig of Bowmore? When I first tried it I didn't like it. I thought it tasted like ink(don't ask), but I grew to enjoy it.

Yep, I bought a bottle of Bowmore 100 degrees last year and really liked it. I was tempted to go back and try another Bowmore but first wanted to try a few different Islays.

The pub in our village is rubbish for whisky (Bells, Teachers and that sort of stuff only) so I find myself 'forced' to buy bottles to sample in the comfort of my own home.

  10. The dalwinnie distillery is about a quarter of an hour away from here. Usually pop in to stock up before going home. It's beautiful stuff. I could do with a drop now after that first half

I visited that distillery about ten years ago, used to be my favourite whisky but have moved on to Islay malts but still enjoy the occasional glass of Dalwhinnie.
