  1. Hi - calling any historical experts. I played for Driffield Rugby League for a couple of seasons around 1990-1992 (club didn't last much longer). Sometime after that I was told Driffield did play rugby league historically. The well established Rugby Union club has a formation date of 1926 which is odd as was certainly played in the 1800's. I have found Driffield playing Hull Kingston Rovers "A" in 1895 (Driffield winning 5-0) at which point Hull KR are still a rugby union club (The moved across in 1897 I believe). However I have also found a cutting from 1900 which seems to be under the "Northern Union" section of the paper beating KR "A" in a cup final at the Boulevard. I dont seem to be able to find much after that to see when they left and became Union again. Is there a record of teams registered to the Northern Union or rugby league and for how long anywhere?
  2. It's always quite with no atmosphere against Catalans and this never seems to help Hull in this home game. I expect tomorrow to be a nervy one and Hull could do with coming off the blocks quickly to avoid this. In a way I am quite glad the team almost seems to pick itself tomorrow... Griffin can play in the centre (he is our best centre at the moment so why play him in the second row to make room for other backs?). Fonua has always been better on the wing than centre for me and Kelly will be on the bench. I dont think Connor has set the world on fire but to be honest I am not entirely sure why a lot of fingers have been pointing at him the last couple of weeks rather than other players. I am not entirely sure Kelly will come onto the field to replace Connor unless having a shocker. More likely to play in a sort of 13 role for me. Also not sure about this "Kelly to full back" business. Has he ever really played there? If Shaul isnt doing the job wouldnt we better moving Connor there? Or that matter a club full back in Connor Wynne? I actually think Hull will win by maybe 7 but its going to be one of these I think they just need to win however ugly it is
  3. In fairness to Radford then its best to base the performances on when that expensive squad is on the pitch. No point moaning about injuries or suspensions as such but the team yesterday looked nothing like the one that won at Leeds for example. I suspect his best team will become clear in the next couple of weeks. For me that's actually using one hooker, Kelly in the halves (not jumping on the Connor thing I just think Kelly is one of the better in the whole comp), Griffin in the centre (we seem to be trying to put square pegs into round holes to move him out of his best position) and a fit Fonua on the wing.
  4. Yep.. to put it in context I was more judging him against the general performance. I just thought he looked "solid enough" Must admit I am not sure of the winger situation. The one thing I am wondering about Swift is that (unlike the others - Faraimo, Ratu and I also include Fonua who I think is a better winger than centre) he may not be as dynamic going forward but may be a bit more solid in defense. I think even against Leeds and KR we still look to have a slightly soft underbelly out wide...
  5. Was delighted to be winning 6-2 at half time as I thought Saints had dominated 90% of the first half on the back of silly mistakes/penalties and basically winning the forward battle (I didn't know until after the game that Bowden had dropped out in the warm up and we did seem a bit "light" missing 4 forwards). Thought we would have kicked on in the second half until Connor hit it out on the full (not quite as spectacular as his banana kick in the first half that defied physics) and that started a bit of a disastrous 15 minutes. At that point I expected a cricket score which we seem to have become specialists at but at least we fronted up to a degree and didnt let that happen. Bit hard to judge anything this early in the season with both teams missing players. I am not sure Radford would have been using Fonua for a couple more games had he the choice for example. My top three players for FC.. Swift (didn't do a thing wrong for me), Sao (aside from a bit of niggle) and Ellis - we still defensively looks miles better when he is on the pitch.
  6. Couple of things to add. Kelly. He will get his chance. Nobody stays fit all year and horses for courses. Behind that pack on a dry pitch will look superb. Thought it was a risk from Radford today that paid off. No forwards on that bench who could have played in backs with an injury. Suspect other games it won't be a steamroller bench and Kelly will come on. One player who stood out for me with no real fanfare.. Jordan Johnstone. Did all the basics right and puts needed pressure on Houghton Delighted with Savelio. Was really pleased when we signed him. Up there with best players I had seen against FC academy years ago
  7. There has been quite a lot of pre-season hype with the Hull signings and a top 3 finish seems achievable to me. The pessimist in me also needs to see how all these players click (not least Connor if in the halves and a temp hooker replacement) and also the fact I have been to Leeds too often thinking we "should win on paper" and lost... That all said if Hull are to finish in the top 3 they have to be beating "mid table" teams. And I have seen nothing signing wise to make me believe (apart from maybe high time spirit) that Leeds are contenders this year. So have to go with a tight Hull win more with heart than head maybe... Hull by 5...
  8. Not sure the logistics but surely the only sensible "double header" would be at the KC stadium with TO playing Rovers. I suppose it just depends on the draw timings
  9. For me Connor is a centre full stop. OK he got "marked out" of a game (which others should then be exploiting the space because of). And this is why I really dont understand the Fonua signing as great as he was for us as we seem to have an abundance of outside backs. Dont get me wrong Connor can have a good game in the halves or full back - he wasn't bad for England v NZ I seem to recall! - just no consistency and needs the freedom and less responsibility of centre I feel. Its from centre he seems to release those crazy balls he has no right to deliver. I dont think I have ever seen Shaul stop when he gets the ball. Constantly working along the line looking for a gap. Problem is he does not seem to be making those breaks through which he seemed to make every other game in previous years. I would like to see the stats from Shaul for the last 3 or 4 years to compare. If you watch Shaul what he does do is constantly talk and organize the defensive line - you could of course make a case for that's not actually going too well - but cant see Connor doing that.
  10. If we hadn't won today I don't think we ever would have. Hull fully dominant aside from the few minutes after the interception which lifted Leeds and the crowd. Current Leeds really a shadow of the teams that we have dreaded visiting Headingley to play in the past. Can't say I even enjoyed it as was still convinced until the hooter we would somehow manage to lose it. I think most FC fans just as nervous.. was very quite in our end I thought.
  11. I am sort of presuming this related to him playing the in the 9's world cup for "England" and not 13 GB? Not sure he would be picked ahead of the others for GB but you would think a cracking asset for the 9's.
  12. Have we ever rest players against Hull KR? Genuine question!
  13. Good to know. I see Sao has "lock" next to prop on Wiki also. I dont have Sky now so must admit have seen anything of him. Not a ball playing forward as such and pretty much a straight 8 or 10 you think? This would sound more of a replacement for say Paea than for Westerman?
  14. I think he has actually been pretty good for us. Not as good as last year when he first came back and then got injured but pretty consistent. My problem is that as a ball playing forward he just seems to sometimes get intl the way. I know a 13 should do a bit of this but it sometimes seems to overcomplicate us. Not too sad if the touted NZ replacement is true
  15. The thing with Fonua is he always seemed to have a big mistake in him each game. BF does not seem to have that and seems better defending in the air. I am sure some stats will prove me wrong but feels that way.
  16. Before the concussion to Shaul and the loss of Ellis I was looking forward to finding out where Hull really are at in this fixture as its not longer a totally under strength team. The back end of last season made people make predictions about how bad Hull are but it really is the same foundations as the team that won two CC cups and on who on their day I felt could beat anyone. Despite that I really don't feel that way this season hence thought this was be a good measurement. Now without those two I cant see much further than a Wire win by a couple of tries. I suspect Radford will play Hakim Miloudi at full back and I expect he will get peppered. To be honest I quite like him going forward but if he does not perform at FB tonight (which is really the position we brought him in at) I cant really see the point of hanging on to him. Normally if fit we would have Connor to fill that role.
  17. I enjoyed the visit - it just seemed much more "friendly" than previous visits to London and the correct size - rather than empty seats. Only complaint and observation - not enough toilets (although sounds like looking in the wrong place) and perhaps someone at the club should look at where away buses are told to park (or advise). The buses from Hull caused a nightmare for traffic on Scotch Common. Wont make many friends if blocking roads and with horns honking!
  18. Apologies if posted previously and missed it Just seen on twitter @nalrugby Arena rugby using league rules
  19. When you lose 5 on the bounce (and the Widnes game was too close for comfort and this includes a thrashing) all "will not be well" and I have noticed a few grumblings around me. That said I aren't panicking but we do need a change of fortunes. As a glass half full sort I do think the injuries of the season has caught up with us and yes we have players back but suspect a bit rushed originally and not back to match fitness. We could do with a couple of wins before the end of the year to start next season with a bit of confidence. That said I do think we are also now seeing the effect of losing Watts and Ellis. I think we need a true front row replacement ASAP not just expecting some young lad to make that grade. And I don't think anyone has filled the Ellis void. When he didn't play last year we sometimes struggled and he could turn a game with a big hit that lifted the team.
  20. I seem to recall (perhaps incorrectly) that when he left he or his agent pretty much made out that rugby league was on its deathbed and he could achieve more etc. in the other code? I wonder what changed?
  21. Our new blue print sounds like a carbon copy of the KR statement when Sandercock arrived to me. So instead of fighting for and spending over the odds for has been Australians we will do it in the city limits instead. On a more sober note just shows how hard sport is when the coach sounds like he got sacked on the same day the players who lost by a record score where celebrating the season on the lash.
  22. Driffield (town 20 miles north of Hull in the East Riding) played in the Hull Saturday and Sunday league for a couple of years around 1991-1992. I am sure they historically played rugby league many many years ago also but cant find any reference to it on the net.
  23. OK maybe a daft idea but here goes. What if.. Crusaders played South Wales in an opening "Welsh Cup" game - yes I know only one winner at the moment. Then play the opening rounds. Then the final game of the weekend was the world club challenge?
