I don't think think I've ever commented on a disciplinary matter on this forum but I couldn't keep quiet on this one.
Disgusting. Utterly disgusting. One of the most horrible offences I've ever seen a player commit on a rugby league field, something at the time made me feel sick when I saw it. Everyone with even the littlest connection to the game were calling for his head. I guess everyone except the disciplinary panel anyway.
I've felt myself drifting away from the game a bit over the last couple of years and this quite frankly has taken what little shred of respect I still had left towards the RFL and ripped it into tiny little pieces and ###### on them.
A truly disgusting decision for a truly disgusting act. My love of rugby league is fading off into the distance and I'm not feeling too much of a need to go catch back up with it right now.
Couldn't agree more, it's Elland Road for me next season. There's no credibility left in the game. A sad day for rugby league.

It's beyond a disgrace.
Along with Bateman being named in the Knights squad it just makes me really sad that the game we love is in the hands of these people
Incompetence doesn't cover it.
Hate to say it but how can the sport in this country be anything other than doomed if it's run by people who think this is acceptable. So sad
Correct in every word.

Sounds like saints have someone in there pocket.

Absolutely astounded by that decision, I'm going to the final as I have already bought tickets, but after the game win or lose I think I'm done with rugby league after watching for 56yrs. The rfl are not fit for purpose. I'll take my grandson to Elland Road in future.

Levelling it all together sounds a better option.

I give up. Ok the RFL have it in for Leeds.
Its done and dusted now, this thread should be put to bed.

Bulldogs to put up a fight but the outcome will always be Fev +18

Does anybody think it's a little bit selfish for saints to appeal, I mean he's bang to rights he's not going to get the ban annulled and if it's increased its only going affect England not saints.

If you aren’t selected in the squad games wouldn’t be counted.
As they shouldn't be. All these bans should be served at club level at the start of the next super league season, not England games or any friendlys.

This is a stab in the dark but are you in charge of Leeds appeal system.
I wish I was I wouldn't have made so many frivolous appeals.

He was found guilty but got no ban.
Quite right but nothing in the game no penalty no sin bin. And Fusitua missed two games due to concussion.

Someone apparenty the know on the saints site has both Knowles and Welsby banned for the final (grading meeting held this morning apparently?)
So that should please those amongst us with a dislike of players sprinting out to attempt tackles at rib height. Or Saints. Or both.
If true of course!
Probably a load of guff, Knowles yes Welsby no.

Just watched it. Very surprised you think there is any real comparison between the two.
Welsby has his feet planted and is head on, bending his back and wrapping his arms. Bentley’s is a flying one armed smack in the head with his swinging forearm.
I'm not saying there's any comparison apart from there was contact with the head in both cases. Both recipients of the tackle were either ducking into or slipping into the tackle. For what its worth I don't think Welsby did much wrong that's worthy of a

Bentley's was very clear cut.

I'll take the dig on the chin Dave but it's the only instance I could think of on the spurr of the moment. Widdop was slipping Atkin was dipping is there any difference both players smacked in the head, Bentleys looked worse I'll grant you.

He didn't get punished at all, no sin bin or penalty given.

These are the notes from the Ben Currie hit on David Fusitu’a early in the season.
High Tackle
Careless – ball carrier dips
Grade A
Sanctions:
0 Match Penalty Notice
So the ball carrier dipping is a consideration in the disciplinary process.
Didn't work out like that for James Bentley.

I’m not being lazy but I can’t find a link to either this tackle or the other referenced Fonua tackle (I assume it’s not the one of Field that he was binned for some reason but not banned).
Dont suppose anyone can help?
Can't comment on the Fonua tackle but Bentley was banned for 3 games extended to 4 for a frivolous appeal. It was on channel 4 iirc first game of the season. Widdop slipped Bentley caught him the head, Kendall sent him off. If he had been upright Bentley would have hit him in the chest.

As we've seen though, that isn't a defence. There is no requirement for a ball carrier to keep his head at full height. There is a requirement on the tackler not to hit the head.
This debate has been had many, many times this year, and pretty much every time, contact with the head has led to a ban.
IMHO Welsby has a fe wthings in his favour that suggests he is attempting a legal tackle, he bends his back slightly, he wraps both arms, moves his head to the side. On the flip side, his tackling shoulder is raised, contact does appear to be in the face, and the pace of the tackle leads to a reckless tackle without control. I think the disciplinary could go either way on this one.
By the way, as much as I enjoy the Saints rivalry, I would add that as an England fan I would have Knowles, Welsby and also Bateman in my England squads and I'm not happy that they all face bans this week.
Sorry Dave, Bateman should be no where near the England team on this seasons performances. It's a shame for Liam Farrell, Bateman couldn't lace his boots.

What that shows to me is a player bending his back, wrapping his arms and putting in a tackle that would be about sternum height if the ball carrier doesn’t crouch down.
Just out of interest is still point of contact? Or post-contact.
Doesn't matter if he's crouching down if he head contact with the head hes in trouble. Widdop was falling when Bentley smacked him in the mouth still copped a ban.

We will see what the panel come up with.
My view is that the Welsby one was a cracking tackle and the Knowles one was a sin bin but nothing more.
Deary me, Welsby maybe I thought it was a great tackle to be fair at the time, but knowles I think you need to go have a lie down in a padded cell. It was disgusting could have dislocated his shoulder.

It probably is Fev but when a player is banned I've never seen them appeal twice to try and overturn it, once you cop a ban you stay banned.
