Surely it absolutely lends to making a weekend of it?!
Very tempted to head to the game given the kick off is perfect for when we’ll be travelling via Wigan anyway coming back from the Blackpool v Bolton match that afternoon.
I really don't fancy a Saturday night in Wigan

3. Herbie Farnwoth
4. Stephen Crichton
5. Brian To’o
6. Cameron Munster
7. Nathan Cleary
8. Payne Haas
9. Harry Grant
10. Addin Fonua-Blake
11. David Fifita
12. Isaiah Papali'i
13. Isaah Yeo
14. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui
15. James Fisher-Harris
16. Joseph Tapine
17. Cameron Murray
(this is my 17 but not necessarily a squad I would choose as there is no reserve 9 for example)
So, all NRL unfortunately. However some pretty close decisions.
I put Ponga at full back as I think he is the most rounded full back in the game at the moment in attack and defence. Dylan Edwards is such a good solid player, Reece Walsh is electric but not the finished article. Ponga is the best of both. I would not argue at all if Jack Welsby was in a 17 as he is the best player in Super League.
I put Crichton at right centre ahead of Manu as I think he has just done enough while Farnworth was great this year. Brian To’o is probably the best winger in the world still and Jaymane Isaako is a very good all round winger. I would definitely have Tom Johnstone in the mix but Isaako has been outstanding in the NRL and internationally so again, he just pips the Englishman.
Cleary is an obvious choice and I have gone for Munster but I don’t think 6 is a particularly strong position world rugby at the moment.
The middle rotation is Haas, Fonua-Blake, Fa'asuamaleaui and Tapine as they are all just machines. Tom Burgess was in my thinking as was a fit Alex Walmsley but again the question is who do you leave out from those 4 and I can’t make that call.
Yeo and Munster are the two best locks and Grant the best 9.
I have gone with Papali'I to partner David Fifita in the 2nd row but others like Liam Martin and a fit Viliame Kikau would be in the mix.
The best English players pushing for spots are Tom Burgess, Tommy Makinson, Jack Welsby, George Williams, Tom Johnstone, Mike McMeeken and Dom Young but I just can’t get them in in all honesty.
Very much on the same page.
Ezra Mam had a wow of a season and could be the 6 on form and i really do enjoy Liam Martin so he'd start ahead of Papali'l wi maybe Cotter on bench

Amazing news. Does.anyone think tickets will go to general sale? Very tempted to travel up and make a weekend of it.
An 8pm kick off rules me out of making it a weekend unfortunately.

The Betting Rights are given to companies who then have the sole right to broadcast live footage of X with the subsequent possibility of people consuming X to place a bet via the platform they're consuming the footage.
A bit like when you can watch football games in betting apps.
I have a few mates who are in this type of business. If i remember correctly, the footage, just needs to be footage. It could be one camera and silent, from a legal perspective.
IMG through endeavour are linked to SKYBET, DraftKings etc.
A quick musing... does this then enable them to say all SL games will be covered as they'll all be on/linked to SKYBET?

The RFL have never sold the betting rights before, most of us don't even know what it really means.
But yeah, I'm sure we had lots of interested parties bidding for the rights.
It's funny reading the replies of people being negative about it just because IMG is involved.

Edit... Someone, probably IMG then receive x on the profits made by the IMG client's Superleague betting activity.

Probably promote Toronto, and keep the funding for themselves.

Who would be promoted?

I don't see anything particularly daft about having an international player of the year.
Nah. I see the point of a world's best player that takes internationals into account, but not as a standalone award. Especially so when there isn't a world's best player award. The optics are all wrong.

well if that's the case why should fans bother.

I actually disagree, there is a lot of positivity coming from quite a few clubs, RL fans are always miserable so and sos, twas ever thus.
Are you happy with the direction of the sport in Europe?
8 minutes ago, Damien said:Why would Union copy when they already get some big crowds for their double header? Its a step backwards. We essentially copied that concept and because we lacked the confidence to sell just two matches just lumbered in all of the matches together in typical stack them high fashion.
There was a fella on radio suggesting so earlier. Again, if i specifically look at the NRL and the espoused benefits to Brissy, i wouldnt rule it out.
7 minutes ago, HawkMan said:As a vehicle for growing the game's fandom MW has failed. Even Newcastle failed, its irrational to think otherwise, if it had been a success the The Thunder wouldn't now be in trouble. IMG wanted MW scrapped the clubs said no, this might be a compromise and a test to see if MW really has a future. If there really is an appetite for the event holding it in a 40,000 seater stadium in the heartlands should be a winner. Maybe some people on here think Elland Road is a dump but that can't be used as an excuse for a low attendance, if it really was that bad it wouldn't get packed out every fortnight. Perhaps IMG's perception of MW is tainted by the rows of empty seats at Newcastle, and if Elland Rd produces a great atmosphere and Sky are happy, then MW could become a TV event rather than a " get new fans by getting them to go watch it live " event. Elland Rd might be the future. But if its a dud then that conclusively means the appetite for MW is just not there. Whatever the perceived shortcomings of ER, this must succeed if the event is to continue.
It'd be interesting to understand the impact of Magic in Newcastle on the crowd we had for the WC opener, which was very promising.
We'll never know as the strategy is about has joined up as my 4 year old's long johns he's come home in this aft. The fact that we're deciding Magic year on year also points to a completely reactive tactical fix every year rather than a medium term, strategic view of something.
-
Magic is a wonderful concept. It really is. The NRL do it for a reason and Union will follow.
The problem has been the execution over the last decade and Elland Road as a choice is the tip of an extremely smelly iceberg.
The game is contracting as all the other leading sports are looking to expand, at least commercially. Internationally we're dead in the NH, IMG is dividing an already small fan-base and i for one have zero thought of pumping any money or time into British RL in 2024.
There is a real negative energy within the game at the moment and other than new leadership, i have no idea on how positivity returns.

The Hyperbole in the other comment was purely to disagree with a SL hater. I probably wouldn’t put Peta Hiku with the best in the comp, but he is probably around that 10-15 mark.
There's at least 20, younger centres who i'd rather have.
He'll be a good signing, but we just need to correctly contextualise.
-
Ultimately, who made the decision and signed off?
I was at the 1st one in Cardiff. If only we'd have stayed there for 5 years and actually built something.
The sport in this country is a joke. It's governed by thickos.

Peta Hiku is not a traditional flashy centre who runs the ball every time instead of passing, which is probably why you don’t rate him. But he is very underrated player, his ball skills/ passing game are fantastic and he has the ability to tip on the ball to the winger like no others. Not to mention he is an absolute metre eater who is practically an extra prop, and was 6TH in the whole entire NRL in 2022 for run metres. Also Defensively he is class.
He is a very unique player but there is no denying he’s talent, there’s not many players who are big as a prop, relatively quick and can play in the halves.
Aye, he's solid.
Your points are often solid, but you lose all credibility with the hyperbole.
I repeat. Peta Hiku is not one of the best centres in the comp. If he was, he'd be staying.

On a serious note regarding Union players.
The one I always thought would be superb was Carlos Spencer. Every time I saw him play I thought, that's a Rugby League player playing Rugby Union.
BoD would have been outstanding.

Also, you don’t believe any Super league sides would do well in the NRL. Honestly mate that’s got to be for a laugh, I’m not even going to disagree with you because of how outrageous and untrue that claim is.
Also by your logic Peta Hiku could not meet the Demands of the NRL, which is totally bonkers considering he is one of the best centres in the comp.
Can you stop saying Peta Hiku is one of the best centres in the NRL. Please.
I can't sleep as it is.

Matt Moylan was a good player 5 or 6 years ago but he will turn 33 next season and is way past his best with a dodgy hamstring history - another one coming for a final pay day - where are our young homegrown talents?
I'd say 7-8 years ago.
I thought he was going to be the next best thing. Sadly... injuries.
Hope he goes well, but its cold here compared to Aus.

it should have been about 300 nil.
When buying the tickets, given the full England allocation and 3 stands not available, i thought it was going to be more full, disappointed in the crowd as a result. A bit nippy mind.
Glasgow Central is one of the bleakest places in the UK. I bet you were glad of the delay.
