  1. The magical story of how rugby league and Wigan Warriors have transformed the lives of the Waith family. Dominic Waith, who has Down’s syndrome, has represented Wigan Warriors’ LDRL team since 2018 when he first fell in love with the sport after watching the Warriors defeat Leeds Rhinos from the stands at the DW stadium. Dominic’s mother, Maxine, who attended the match with her son, recalled the special memory: “We were given tickets to come and watch a game and he absolutely loved it – the stadium, the noise, the crowd, the game. “For the first time as a family we felt like we belonged somewhere and that we could do something with him which we enjoyed – it was magical.” Dominic, who was named LDRL ‘Warrior of the Year’ at the 2022 Disability End of Season Awards, represented the Warriors on the pitch at St James’ Park at the recent Magic Weekend. Maxine and Dominic Waith Dominic with Matt Peet On what it means to Dominic to play for the Warriors, Maxine said: “It’s lovely so see the resilience and proudness of the players to wear the club badge. “Even though it’s just for fun and it isn’t competitive, all they want to do is win because they’re representing Wigan Warriors.” Read the full story in Friday’s matchday programme which will be available to purchase at the DW Stadium or online HERE. Please note the digital version can only be bought an hour before kick off. The post Dominic Waith’s magical story appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article

York Valkyrie were presented with the League Leaders’ Shield and St Helens secured home advantage in the first round of the Play-Offs on the last day of the regular 2023 season in the Betfred Women’s Super League – while Featherstone Rovers secured automatic promotion to the top tier when it is expanded to eight teams in 2024, thanks to a big helping hand from Barrow at Leigh. York will now host Wigan Warriors in the first of the BWSL Semi Finals at 3:30pm on Saturday September 23. Ticket details and further information will be confirmed in due course. The second Semi Final will be a repeat of the first Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos, and will kick off at 6pm at the Totally Wicked Stadium, also on Saturday September 23 – with both Semi Finals, and the Grand Final, live on Sky Sports. The Rhinos had nudged above Saints into second place in the table by beating Wigan 24-0 at Headingley on Saturday lunchtime but St Helens reclaimed second spot with a 56-6 win against Warrington Wolves on Sunday afternoon. Leigh Leopards started the day in the box seat for the automatic promotion place, but third-placed Barrow took a 14-12 win. Kieron Purtill’s Leopards will have a second opportunity to secure promotion in the Play-Offs, in which they will face Salford Red Devils in the Semi Finals. Featherstone Rovers can already start preparing to join the elite teams in 2024 after they beat Salford 28-18 at the Millennium Stadium. Peet: “The lads can take the credit and it’s important to give them a pat on the back as what they’ve just done took a lot of physical and mental commitment.” FT | Leeds Rhinos 00-50 Wigan Warriors. Matt Peet praised his side after Wigan Warriors returned to the top of the table following a 50-0 win over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. Speaking on the result, Peet said: “It was a really good performance against a really good team – I’m really pleased. I’ve just spoken to the team and said that people will see the score and think it was an easy win – it certainly wasn’t. The result required a ton of effort during the week and at the start of both half’s.” On the performance, Peet said: “The lads can take the credit and it’s important to give them a pat on the back as what they’ve just done took a lot of physical and mental commitment. It’s something we can enjoy for an hour or two, but then you move onto trying to improve for next week.” Speaking on Jake Wardle’s hat-trick, Peet said: “He’s got to be pleased after that. He’s a very skilful centre, he’s defending tough, and I love the way he’s playing at the moment. We’ve got ourselves a really quality player.” 𝙈𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 With 70.4% of the votes, Jake Wardle is your Man of the Match #WWRL #SLLEEWIG pic.twitter.com/p7PwwO4IEP — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 9, 2023 On Liam Byrne’s injury, Peet said: “He’s going to need a scan a scan on his hamstring – fingers crossed for some positive news.” The Warriors have kept a clean sheet in their last two away matches, and on the defence, Peet said: “Our defence was identified as an area which we needed to tighten up this year and Sean O’Loughlin’s done a fantastic job which has gone under the radar. He can be really proud of how the team are defending at the moment.” Commenting on the the final two rounds of the regular season, Peet said: “The position we are in now we should be setting an aim to hold it. If we play well and get results against Castleford and Leigh then we’ll finish top. It’s a realistic aim now because if we turn up with the same sort of commitment and discipline as we did today then we can compete with anyone.” Watch the full interview with Matt Peet on Wigan TV HERE. 9. Match Report as Wigan Warriors record a big win against Leeds Rhinos. Jake Wardle registered a hat-trick as Wigan ran in nine unanswered tries. FT | Leeds Rhinos 0-50 Wigan Warriors. Match Report as Wigan Warriors record a huge victory over Leeds Rhinos to remain top of the Super League table. Wigan dominated the opening forty as Jake Wardle crossed for a brace of tries, with Jai Field and Liam Marshall also adding to the scoresheet as Wigan went in 22-0 to the good at the turnaround. Jake Wardle completed his hat-trick in the second half with Kai Pearce-Paul, Abbas Miski, Liam Farrell and Patrick Mago also getting in on the act as Wigan kept Leeds to nil. Report It was a thrilling opening to a hot encounter at Leeds’ Headingley Stadium and it was the Rhinos who thought they’d struck first as Harry Newman raced half the length of the field to go over, the referee sent the effort to the video referee and no try was awarded as Leeds knocked the ball on in the build-up. Wigan got the first points on the board just three minutes later though, a high tackle on Jake Wardle allowed them into the Rhinos half before a perfect crossfield kick saw Jake Wardle leap highest to collect the ball and get it down. Smith added the extras as Wigan led 6-0 after 15 minutes. Wigan extended their lead in the 21st minute as Harry Smith once again sent a kick across field, Leeds fumbled the ball in-goal for Jai Field to pounce on the loose ball. The effort was checked intently by the video referee but the try was confirmed with Harry Smith adding the extras for 12-0. The Warriors added to their scoreline in the 33rd minute as swift hands from Field to Wardle allowed the Centre to send Marshall over with ease in the left corner. Smith saw his conversion attempt ricochet off the uprights but Wigan had the 16-0 advantage with five minutes until the break. Wigan were carving through the Leeds backline and an error from the Rhinos got Wigan back on the ball from close range, Field drew in the defence before sending Jake Wardle through a gap for his second of the afternoon. Harry Smith nailed the conversion from out wide to see Wigan in with a 22-0 lead at the turnaround. Wigan’s dominance continued from the off as Kai Pearce-Paul charged down a kick which Morgan Smithies collected to send Pearce-Paul diving in under the sticks in front of a jubilant travelling support. Smith added the extras once more to make it 28-0. Jake Wardle completed his hat-trick just after the hour, an error from Leeds allowing Kai Pearce-Paul to capitalise on the loose ball before Wigan sent it left for Wardle to shrug off the defence to dive over for his third try. Harry Smith slotted over another two points as Wigan hit 34-0. Wigan crossed for a seventh try in the 70th minute as winger Abbas Miski collected a nice drop off pass from Bevan French to put the ball down under the uprights, with Smith adding his sixth goal to see Wigan out to 40-0. Not done there, Wigan added their eighth unanswered try as Jai Field sent Liam Farrell racing backwards towards the goal line before shrugging off his defender to crash over. Smith’s conversion attempt edged wide of the posts, but it was 44-0 to the Warriors. Wigan rounded off the afternoon with two minutes to go as Junior Nsemba took a drive in before getting an offload away for the prop forward to ease over next to the sticks. 11. Match Report as Wigan Warriors Women were beaten by Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. After a closely contested first half, the Rhinos scored a flurry of late tries to win. FT | Leeds Rhinos Women 24-0 Wigan Warriors Women. Match Report as Wigan Warriors Women were beaten 24-0 by Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium in the final match of the regular season. Report Vicky Molyneux captained the Warriors in the absence of Rachel Thompson, and despite being called into action in the opening minutes to keep Sophie Robinson out, the Warriors competed well in a tightly contested first half. Handling errors limited chances for Wigan and Leeds in the opening half an hour, however, the Rhinos opened the scoring off the back of a knock on as Amy Hardcastle powered over the line. The score remained at 4-0 after Sam Hulme was unable to convert the kick. The Warriors looked for an immediate response as powerful carries from Beri Salihi and Anna Davies forced a penalty for offside. However, as Wigan attacked the Leeds line 20m out, an attempted pass to Kaitlin Hilton bounced into touch. The Rhinos threatened to extend their lead in the final minute of the half when Elle Frain broke through the line to take the hosts 20m out, however, the ball was knocked on in the next phase of play to bring the half to an end. The Warriors restarted strongly as Mary Coleman forced a goal line drop out in the opening minutes after Leeds struggled to deal with a dangerous grubber kick from Sinead Doria, however, a powerful hit from the Rhinos led to a knock on. Leeds almost extended their advantage after 48 minutes when Hardcastle initially broke through the line to set the Rhinos up 20m out, but the Warriors stood firm to hold Hanna Butcher up on the final tackle. The hosts applied pressure on the Warriors defensive line five minutes later when once more the ball fell into the hands of Butcher on the final tackle, however, the Cherry and Whites defended excellently to force the Leeds captain back. The introduction of Mollie Jones sparked momentum for the Warriors as the centre, and Grace Banks, broke the line to take the Warriors into dangerous territory, however, Tasha Gaines was alert to collect the kick through and relieve pressure. The Rhinos extended their lead shortly after the hour when Zoe Hornby chased her own grubber kick before touching down between the sticks with Hulme adding the extras to make the score 10-0. A third try was scored on 67 minutes when Caitlin Casey’s kick deflected kindly back into the path of the stand-off to touch down, and a fourth came four minutes later when Hornby crashed over for a converted try to make the score 20-0. The Rhinos wrapped up the match with five minutes remaining when Hardcastle crossed in the corner, for her second try, and the score remained 24-0 until the final whistle. 12. Disabled supporters of Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors led the way as Rugby League recorded an unprecedented number of responses in the 2023 Level Playing Field Annual Fan Survey. The Betfred Super League sides – who clash at Headingley this weekend in a Women’s and Men’s double header – both finished in the top ten clubs across England and Wales for responses to the charity’s survey, which is open across all sports and divisions. Previously, no Rugby League club had received enough responses to reach the top 50, but a concerted effort by the RFL and professional clubs across the sport has resulted in an uptake which will provide invaluable data on work around accessibility and inclusion over the coming year. Level Playing Field have now provided the clubs with individual reports, which they will be able to use to get detailed insight on the experiences of their disabled fans. Both clubs have committed to work with the charity on a review of their public access statements and will each be furthering their consultation with supporters directly, by holding disabled fans’ forums. Ben Abberstein, Inclusion Lead at the Rugby Football League, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Level Playing Field on accessibility – an essential part of what we’re doing to advance inclusion in Rugby League and a commitment shared by our clubs who promoted the Annual Fan Survey. “The response we achieved is a remarkable display of the passion of Rugby League fans and we congratulate Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors on placing in the top ten clubs overall. We look forward to working with our clubs and Level Playing Field to understand the data and improve access across the sport so that disabled people are able to fully express their passion for the game.” Owain Davies, Chief Executive of Level Playing Field, said: “We have been delighted by the dramatic change in response levels from Rugby League fans in this year’s annual fan survey and are particularly grateful to Ben Abberstein at the RFL, for his work in promoting club engagement. “This year, we saw a record level of responses as a whole, so for Leeds and Wigan to reach the top ten now is testament to their fan engagement. Both clubs have now shown a huge appetite to make use of the data, work with us, and find out more about their disabled fans. “Rugby League does so much great work on participation for disabled athletes, so it is now fantastic to give our support towards this renewed focus on provisions for disabled fans.” After Saturday’s double header at Leeds, Wigan Warriors will host their second annual “Festival of Inclusivity” in their last home league fixture of the season against Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium on Friday September 15. The 2023 Level Playing Field Annual Fan Survey received more than 1750 responses from disabled fans across all sports. The charity is now in the process of preparing a full report on the results, which will made publicly available to fans and sent to clubs, in order for them to see how they perform in a wider sporting context. 13. The final round of the Betfred Women’s Super League (BWSL) will take place this weekend (September 9/10) with the League Leaders’ Shield to be presented, and play-off and promotion places all to play for ahead of the competition moving to a new format next year. From 2024 the top tier will be an eight-team competition including the six clubs from Group One of the current BWSL – Huddersfield Giants, Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and York Valkyrie. The teams in Group Two will fight for two promotion spots to join them, with the first placed team going up automatically and the other up for grabs via the play-offs. In Group One, York Valkyrie will become the first BWSL team in history to win the League Leaders’ Shield in successive seasons when they are presented with the trophy after their fixture against Huddersfield Giants on Sunday (September 10, KO 3pm). A win for Lindsay Anfield’s team would complete an unbeaten season as they look towards the play-offs in the quest for their first BWSL title. Leeds Rhinos will host Wigan Warriors in the first part of a double header at Headingley Stadium on Saturday (September 9, KO 12.15pm) – both sides have effectively guaranteed their play-off place with the Rhinos set for a Challenge Cup Final rematch against St Helens and Wigan facing York Valkyrie should they finish the season in fourth place. The final fixture in Group One will be contested between Saints and Warrington at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday (KO 1pm). The Group One semi-finals will take place on Saturday September 23 with both fixtures scheduled to take place live on Sky Sports – venue and timings will be confirmed in due course. Three teams in Group Two will battle it out for automatic promotion to the top flight on Sunday – Barrow Raiders, Featherstone Rovers and Leigh Leopards are all in contention with a solitary point currently separating the sides. Rovers will kick the day off when they host Salford Red Devils at the Millennium Stadium (KO 12pm) before Leigh Leopards take on Barrow Raiders at Leigh Sports Village (KO 2pm). A win for the Leopards would guarantee them the League Leaders’ Shield and promotion to the top tier in 2024, alongside the big guns of the women’s game. Kieron Purtill’s side have suffered just one defeat all season and have continued to impress since partnering with community club Leigh Miners Rangers in 2022. But Barrow will be keen to spoil the party, knowing a win could secure automatic promotion – although it would also open the door for Featherstone, who have a slightly superior points difference going into the last round of matches. The two teams who miss out on the automatic promotion spot will have a second chance in the play-offs, which culminate in a promotion-deciding Final on Sunday October 8, before the BWSL Grand Final. Elsewhere in Group Two, Castleford Tigers take on Bradford Bulls at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle (KO 2pm) where a win for the Bulls would secure their play-off spot. The teams remaining in Group Two at the end of the play-offs will merge with the Championship from 2024 to sit in tier two of the national pyramid alongside four regional feeder leagues – Midlands, North, Roses and South. 15. Match Report as Wigan Warriors Academy run out winners against Leeds Rhinos Academy. Wigan scored five tries on the night to finish their campaign in second spot. FT | Leeds Rhinos Academy 24-28 Wigan Warriors Academy. Match Report as Wigan Warriors Academy beat Leeds Rhinos Academy in the final round of the league competition. Report Wigan started the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded for their efforts as they crossed for the first score of the game. Tom Ratchford was unfortunate to be held up over the line but the next play saw Wigan work the ball well to find George O’Loughlin who went over for the try. Jack Farrimond added the two for 6-0. The Warriors were asking all the questions and again it came to Tom Ratchford who got over the line, but was denied once more by the referee who adjudged that the hooker had been held-up for a second time. Leeds got their response in the 16th minute as Kyden Frater crossed for a levelling score. The Rhinos had done well to keep the ball alive on the last tackle for Frater to collect and avoid the Warriors defence to get the ball down. Riley Lumb added the two to make it 6-6. Wigan got their noses back in front in the 22nd minute though, despite Trent Kelly-Duffy going close it was Taylor Kerr who got the try as he flew onto to ball to crash over for Wigan’s second, again Farrimond was on target from the tee to make it 12-6 to the Warriors. The hosts pushed for a response but the Warriors backed up well in defence, before they extended their lead further. This time, after keeping the ball alive, Taylor Kerr broke the line to dive over with Farrimond improving the effort for 18-6. Right before the hooter, Leeds’ Harrison Gilmore was dismissed for a high shot on Lukas Mason, which saw the Warriors second rower forced from the field with Leeds left to play out the second half with 12-men whilst 18-6 down. Despite the man deficit, Leeds got themselves back in the tie immediately after the restart. Wigan were penalised for offside before Mason Corbett picked out Bobby Hartley to go over, the score was converted by Riley Lumb and it was 18-12 to Wigan. The reply was short-lived from Leeds as Wigan extended their advantage in the 47th minute, this time Harry Higham supporting a great break to go over, which Farrimond converted to put the Warriors out to 24-12 with half an hour to play. The end-to-end action ensued as Leeds responded once more, this time taking advantage from the Warriors for Kyden Frater to cross the whitewash for his second of the evening, Riley Lumb was on target with the extras and the score was reduced to 24-18 in Wigan’s favour. Wigan edged further ahead in the 65th minute as a well-placed grubber kick from Jack Farrimond allowed Finlay Irwin to give chase and place the ball down, the conversion from Farrimond this time rebounded off the sticks and it was 28-18. Within three minutes, Leeds bit back as Riley Lumb carved open some space to complete a solo effort, converting his own score to reduce Wigan’s advantage to four points, it stood 28-24 to the Warriors with 10 minutes remaining. The Rhinos thought they’d got themselves level in the 73rd minute as a crossfield kick was collected by Dylan Proud, but the effort was ruled out for an offside in the build-up and despite back-to-back sets for Leeds in the dying minutes, the Warriors held on for a hard-fought two points to end their regular league campaign. 17. Jake Wardle looks ahead to Saturday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. Wardle: “We need to take things week-by-week which starts by giving it our all against Leeds and after that we can then focus on the next game.” Watch previews with Matt Peet and Bevan French on Wigan TV HERE. Centre Jake Wardle says things must be taken ‘week-by-week’ as Wigan Warriors prepare for Saturday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. The Warriors climbed to the top of the Super League table on points difference following a 26-8 win over Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium last time out, and the Cherry and Whites will be looking to remain at the top come the end of the Round 25 matches. Looking ahead to the clash with Leeds Rhinos, Wardle said: “We’re expecting a lot of energy as they’re still in a position where they’re fighting for the top six. They’re going to offer a lot with ball in hand as well as testing us defensively so we need to make sure we are on it mentally and at the top of our form. “We had a really good session this morning and we’re all very positive going into this week. We’ve got three big games to go but we don’t want to look any further ahead than Leeds as we know the challenge we will face.” Wardle has scored 10 Super League tries so far this season, which includes four in his last four appearances. On the scoring run, he said: “The way we’ve been playing has given me more opportunities to finish off tries. For me though it’s not about the tries, but just playing as consistently as I can and hoping that tries can come off the back of that.” 36' TRYYY! WARDLEEE! 12-4 #WWRL #SLWIGSAL pic.twitter.com/HYV4fhjooU — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 1, 2023 The Warriors have won their last five Super League matches, and on confidence, Wardle said: “The belief we have as players and individuals comes from the belief Matty and the other coaches have instilled into us. It’s just been about backing our ability and I’m hoping the confidence and consistency is showing.” The Warriors were beaten in golden point to Hull KR in the Challenge Cup semi-final on their last visit to Headingley Stadium, however, Wardle believes the defeat has played a part in the recent change of form. He said: “Losing the semi-final in that way hurt. Each person in the squad took it personally and as a group we came together to set a few goals which we’re all buying into. Our performances haven’t been perfect by any means, but we’re all turning up for each other in our performances.” Looking ahead to the final three rounds of the regular season, Wardle said: “For us now it’s just about being psychologically right. We know what we can do on the field so it’s just about being there mentally. We need to take things week-by-week which starts by giving it our all against Leeds and after that we can focus on the next game.” Speaking on his time at the Warriors so far, Wardle said: “It’s a great club and I’d like to hope that my performances are showing just how much I’m enjoying my time here which is credit to the lads, the coaching staff, and the fans.” Match tickets, which include entry to both the Men’s and Women’s games, are available to buy online HERE and in-Store at Robin Park Arena (open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm). Tickets will be taken off sale online and in-store at 12pm Friday 8 September. The post Wardle Previews Leeds appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article

  19. Women’s Head Coach, Kris Ratcliffe, previews Saturday’s double-header at Headingley Stadium. Ratcliffe: “The key this week is to maintain the intensity and focus in defence for the full duration and really challenge Leeds when we have the ball.” Leeds Rhinos Women v Wigan Warriors Women, Saturday 9th September, Headingley Stadium (12:15pm K.O.) Wigan Warriors Women’s Head Coach, Kris Ratcliffe, looks ahead to Saturday’s double-header at Leeds’ Headingley Stadium (12:15pm K.O.) Reflecting on the learnings from the 2023 season so far, Ratcliffe said: “We have put ourselves in a very strong position to secure a top four finish, and a play-off Semi Final. “All season our focus has been about building our performances and resilience to compete and challenge the top three, with Leeds being one of those teams.” He added: “We have done that this year but have not maintained that performance level for the full 80 minutes. Small drops in intensity and concentration have cost us the results in some of the bigger games, such as the Challenge Cup Semi Final and the Nines final, both against Leeds being prime examples.” On this week’s opposition, he said: “We know the threats that Leeds have and if we allow them to dictate the flow of the game they have skilful dangerous players across the park. “The key this week is to maintain the intensity and focus in defence for the full duration and really challenge Leeds when we have the ball. We have plenty of dangerous runners in our side so we just have to be consistent in our processes to give them the platform and space to deliver.” Our Warriors Women finish the regular season away to @leedsrhinos this Saturday as part of a double-header at Headingley Stadium! https://t.co/itoDaFEcie#WWRL pic.twitter.com/pV7uEAsCCp — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 6, 2023 Updating on squad availability, he said: “We will get a couple of players back for this game after injury but equally will lose the experience of our Captain Rachel Thompson, who failed a HIA in our game against Huddersfield last weekend. Our more experienced players will really need to step up to help guide our young side around the park.” He added: “What we can be sure of is that our young players won’t be phased by the occasion as they’ve stood up to all tests this year and they’re looking forward to running out at Headingley and performing again this week.” Tickets for Saturday’s game at Headingley Stadium can be purchased HERE. 20. Bevan French looks ahead to Saturday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. French: “We are definitely enjoying the process of getting to where we are at, but we know there are still things we need to improve on and that there is a lot of work still to be done.” Watch full match previews with Bevan French and Matt Peet on Wigan TV HERE. Bevan French says Wigan Warriors are in a ‘good mood’ ahead of Saturday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. On being top of the Super League table, French said: “Everyone’s in a good mood as being top of the ladder is where we set out to be and now that we are top teams are going to be coming after us. We are definitely enjoying the process of getting to where we are at, but we know there are still things we need to improve on and that there is a lot of work still to be done.” The Warriors have won their last six Super League matches, and speaking on the current form, French said: “We’re definitely hitting our form now, but we aren’t underestimating any team we come up against. We’ve been guilty in the past of not learning the lessons we needed to have learnt during the year, but we’ve had a few tough lessons this season and we now realise the importance of those lessons.” 2⃣7⃣ and counting… Two more assists for Bevan French on Friday night, who leads the way at the top of the @SuperLeague charts!#WWRL pic.twitter.com/S06YtQfY4d — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 4, 2023 On intensity, French added: “It’s important we get the intensity right heading into the back end of the year as it’s going to go through the roof. The last few years we’ve been the best attacking team and played a lot of entertaining rugby league, but when you get to the semi-finals the intensity lifts, the scramble defence gets a lot better and you have to grind out wins in a gritty ways. We need to be prepared for that.” Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash at Leeds Rhinos, French said: “Their form hasn’t been where they would’ve wanted it to have be, however, they’ve shown that when they turn it on they’re a dangerous team. Whenever we play Leeds it’s a challenge and we aren’t going to take them lightly as they’re still fighting for a place in the top six.” On playing in the halves, French said: “I feel like I’ve been in the games a lot more in comparison to when on the wing or at full back. I just feel like I’m always switched on in that role in the middle and I’m really enjoying my development as a player.” Today we celebrated the great work of our Community Clubs as the players trained in a shirt of the Amateur Club they represented!#WWRL pic.twitter.com/iXvqbkJjLo — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 5, 2023 Speaking on Tuesday’s training session, French said: “You start off as a little kid having those dreams of playing in Grand Finals and winning trophies so this has been a good reminder as to why we are here and where we have come from.” Match tickets, which include entry to both the Men’s and Women’s games, are available to buy online HERE and in-Store at Robin Park Arena (open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm). 21. Rugby League taking the lead in fostering good brain health in players. The rollout of a comprehensive education programme is already underway. Fund to support players suffering from poor brain health. Rugby League Cares is proud to announce the launch of a ground-breaking new project that will see the sport of rugby league take the lead in the field of fostering good brain health in players. The Rugby League Cares Brain Health Fund has been established to allow the implementation of a far-reaching education and support programme for both current and retired rugby league players. The aim of the fund is to equip players and their families with the knowledge they need to sustain good brain health during their careers, and to provide important support for those who have been diagnosed with neurological conditions, both pre and post-retirement. Working with a wide range of organisations including the Rugby Football League and its member clubs, plus medical experts, the independent charity RL Cares has already begun to roll out a comprehensive education programme to current players about this important aspect of their health. Concerns around the long-term effects of head injuries in contact sports have increased in recent years in light of advances in scientific research. The RL Cares Brain Health Fund will enable the sport to share the latest developments in this emerging field so that players can make informed choices. The fund will also provide advice to players suffering poor brain health, and to their families, such as signposting to support from statutory services and, should resources allow, respite care. Steve McCormack, Director of Welfare at RL Cares said: “The RL Cares Brain Health Fund is a significant first for sport in this country and once again puts rugby league at the forefront of innovation and best practice when it comes to player welfare. “Rugby league is now safer to play than it has ever been but, like every contact sport, there are inherent risks in taking part. “The Brain Health Fund will help us provide players with the information and advice they need to mitigate those risks, to make informed choices about their own health, and to be as healthy as they can be. “The brain health workshops that we’ve begun delivering to Super League clubs have been enthusiastically received by the playing community and that programme will expand as the Brain Health Fund grows. “We also want to help the families of current and retired players who are experiencing poor brain health: we aim to put together a comprehensive package of support and build on the sport’s proud record of looking after its own.” McCormack is a member of the sport’s Brain Health Steering Group which also features high-level medical experts, including Prof Chris Brookes, Dr Gemma Phillips and Prof Ben Jones, plus RL Cares trustee Kevin Sinfield OBE. Kevin Sinfield MBE, RL Cares trustee and former player said: “Educating players about brain health is massively important: they spend their careers trying to look after every part of their bodies but often neglect the brain and their own heads. “We can change the path for some people by providing the support they need to become better, but we can also support ourselves to be better too. “Anything we can do to help current and former players understand that there are things they can do to make the path ahead a better path is to be welcomed. “Education is vital, both for players and their families. Players need to help themselves because they have to be accountable and responsible for their own careers and health. “The support for families is really important. Through my work with the MND community I understand the value of a good support network. “Not only from a love and care perspective, but friendship and socially: there will be times when things aren’t going to plan and things might seem to be off-track, having a friendly face with some clear, simple advice is a massive help. “That’s where RL Cares and the Brain Health Fund have an important role to play.” Prof Chris Brookes, Wigan Warriors vice-chairman, who has been involved in the sport for almost 30 years as team doctor with Great Britain, England and Wigan, said the RL Cares Brain Health Fund is a continuation of the sport’s proactive approach to player welfare. Prof Chris Brookes said: “I am really proud of the way in which rugby league has led the way in the field of player welfare. “Through the work of RL Cares, player welfare is first and foremost at every club and the Brain Health Fund is another step forward in our commitment to make the game as safe as it can be. “Players have always had worries about their health, especially when they suffer a brain trauma like concussion, and the Brain Health Fund will ensure that not only will they understand more, they will also be able to speak to experts about their concerns and anxieties.” The brain health programme will be funded by voluntary donations and an active fundraising campaign of events run by Rugby League Cares. 22. Matt Peet looks ahead to Saturday’s Betfred Super League Round 25 game against Leeds Rhinos. Peet: “It’s a good feeling but we can’t get carried away. It’s only on points difference which shows how fine the margins are, but it’s something to fight to keep hold of now.” Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors, Saturday 9 September, Headingley Stadium, 2:45pm. Matt Peet spoke to the press on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium. Providing an update on the squad, Peet said: “Out of the Catalans game and into the Salford one we had to deal with a few bangs and bruises but the team are all healthy now.” The victory over Salford Red Devils took the Warriors to the top of the Super League table, and on this, Peet said: “It’s a good feeling but we can’t get carried away. It’s only on points difference which shows how fine the margins are, but it’s something to fight to keep hold of now.” Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash with Leeds Rhinos, Peet said: “We’re expecting a real arm-wrestle of a game which will be really tight. Women 12:15pm Men 2:45pm https://t.co/itoDaFEcie#WWRLhttps://t.co/dr0mRjafBD — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) September 4, 2023 On preparation, Peet said: “We have to be intelligent around what we’re doing in training, such as increasing recovery and the attention to detail around nutrition and hydration. As far as gameday comes it’s full throttle and and we have to demand 100% and nothing less.” On improvements, Peet added: “There are still a few areas we need to be better in. We are very confident in our ability to score points, but we would love to improve on the defensive side. Our eyes are very much focused on the points conceded.” When asked about the Warriors Reserves, Peet said: “I’m pleased we have that competition to utilise and that’s exactly what it’s for. There’s so much you can do in training, but players ultimately want to play. The lads who have played have applied themselves very well.” On the competition for the League Leaders Shield, Peet said: “It’s something we have always craved for in Super League when you reach this time of the year – every game has something riding on it. There’s a lot going on but certainly every game is catching the eye.” Match tickets, which include entry to both the Men’s and Women’s games, are available to buy online HERE and in-Store at Robin Park Arena (open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm).
