  1. Today, Wigan Warriors send their deepest condolences to Bevan French following the passing of his mother.

After suffering a season-ending hamstring injury last May, French returned home to Australia to undergo his rehabilitation whilst looking after his mum, who was battling a long illness.

French has spent an extended period of time at home and in a heartfelt tribute on Monday, he posted the following on his Instagram page:

“For forever and more. Words can’t describe the gratitude I have for your sacrifice. Love you Ma. Until we meet again. R.I.P.”

Executive Director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Some things in life are bigger than rugby. All our thoughts and prayers are with Bevan and his family at this time. His Wigan family will be waiting with open arms for his return, to care and protect him.”

  2. Wigan Warriors have linked with Rugby League Ireland in a partnership with Community Club Loughshinny RLFC.

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are starting to deliver Rugby League in Ireland in a bid to increase participation within the game over the water. Staff from the Community Foundation recently visited Loughshinny, a coastal village in northern County Dublin, the first Community Club in Ireland to become part of the ambassador project.

Head of the Community Foundation, Martin McLoughlin, said: “Working with Ireland RL and Loughshinny RLFC is another powerful statement of the aspirations of Wigan Warriors and its Community Foundation. We hope to generate positive presence, profile and brand through strategic delivery in areas of potential growth. If we can provide schools and clubs with the fundamentals to increase community engagement it allows us to reach out to new fans and new participants.”

During the visit they attended schools and the local Rugby League Clubs facilities to share future partnership plans that will see Wigan Warriors coaches deliver Rugby League through a host of fun school holiday camps, development day performance sessions and coach education workshops for all teachers and coaches.

Wigan Warriors community club ambassadors programme is fully committed to supporting all 21 local community clubs that are involved in the new 2022 program and any other clubs that have an interest to be involved and seek professional support with their club’s future development.

This new and exciting partnership will complement those efforts and support the growth of the grassroots game and also give young aspiring rugby players a clear pathway with Wigan Warriors. The visit was the first of many to Ireland that will engage with so many Irish rugby league enthusiasts & in return we are looking forward to welcoming Loughshinny and Ireland Rugby League to a Wigan Warriors home fixture in 2022.

Rory O’Hara of Loughshinny RL said: “Loughshinny Rugby League Club and St Brendan’s School Rugby League were delighted to host Wigan Warriors. This partnership strengthens Wigan’s connection with our Irish fans not just in Ireland but with the wider Irish Rugby League diasporas around the world particularly in Australia and New Zealand, while also providing a clear pathway for young Irish players both in Loughshinny and in Ireland as a whole to participate in Rugby League and take up all the advantages and knowledge that being an ambassador to the Wigan Warriors entails!”

In addition, Chairman of Rugby League Ireland, Jim Reynolds, said:

“I am delighted that Wigan Warriors have chosen to bring this first-in-Ireland partnership between a local Club for junior RL players and coaches directly into their outstanding Ambassador programme – their first outside of England.

Growing Junior RL is one of the major pillars of the RLI Five Year Strategic Plan, that we launched three months ago, to build and sustain our great sport in Ireland for the decades to come. Congratulations to all involved!”

    • Morgan Smithies looks ahead to the 2022 season in an interview with Wigan TV.
    • Smithies: “I’m not really a young lad anymore so I think I need to start showing that on the pitch.”
    • Watch the full interview on Wigan TV, not a subscriber? Click HERE to join today!

Morgan Smithies caught up with Wigan TV to discuss returning from the Christmas break, pre-season friendlies and the upcoming season.

“Nice little 10-day break over Christmas but it’s good to be back now with the boys. Everyone has had a nice break but everyone was very keen and eager to get back,” he said.

“I spent Christmas with my family and friends, spent some time with my friends back at home which was nice but now I’m back over in Wigan and looking forward to kicking on with my Rugby.”

The squad all returned from the Christmas break and have two pre-season fixtures on the horizon: “Yeah that’s the good thing about coming back after Christmas, you’ve got the games to look forward to, we’ve only got a few weeks worth of training and then we’re into the games which everyone is buzzing for, I can’t wait to get back out there with the lads.”

Another week boxed off! ☑#WWRL pic.twitter.com/mqLqQZe9dx

    — Wigan Warriors 🍒⚪ (@WiganWarriorsRL) January 8, 2022

Smithies is well accustomed to Matt Peet as a Coach and has enjoyed his approach so far: “From playing at Scholarship I always thought Matt would one day get Head Coach at Wigan, Matt has had a big influence on my career and I’m chuffed for him getting the Head Coach role. I think he fully deserves it and I think he’ll do well.

“I’d say there’s been a big culture change, about what we do away from the training ground, about what we do inside these four walls, just being better blokes and more importantly just back enjoying our rugby I think. It’s been really good so far.”

Smithies enters another season with the Warriors and has high hopes to improve his game: “100%, I’m 21 now and I’ve got over 50 games under my belt so I think this year I really need to kick on. I’m not really a young lad anymore so I think I need to start showing that on the pitch.

“The past two seasons have been a bit average, my first season was alright then after that it’s just been a bit average but this year I’m really looking forward to kicking on with my rugby.”

Make it Wigan in 2022 and celebrate our 150th year with a Wigan Warriors season ticket. Supporting Wigan is about more than just going to a game. It’s about something bigger, something special. 3. Wigan Warriors can confirm that youngsters Alex Sutton and Matty Nicholson have both signed for Betfred Championship side Newcastle Thunder on loan deals.

Sutton, 19, and Nicholson, 18, were both given senior squad numbers with Wigan for the first time in the off-season and have now joined Newcastle to gain first team experience.

There is a call-back option in Wigan’s favour for both players to return to the Club throughout 2022 if required.

Head of Youth, Darrell Goulding, said: “It’s a really good experience for them getting to play at a high level in the Championship and will help accelerate their development. Newcastle have a very good set up and will make the lads feel welcome. We look forward to watching them progress.”

Both players have been involved in the Warriors’ pre-season preparations ahead of the loan agreement.

Sutton joined Wigan’s Scholarship system having started playing Rugby League with Widnes Moorfield. He has since progressed through the Academy and featured heavily for the Warriors’ Under-19s team in 2021.

On making the move to Newcastle, Sutton said: “I’m looking forward to being at Thunder and working hard to keep getting experience. I’ve been introduced to the first team at Wigan this year and have been involved in pre-season, but I’m coming on loan to hopefully gain some experience.”

Nicholson returns to Thunder having played for the North East side in a game against Bradford Bulls in August 2021 on a short-term deal.

The second rower / loose forward started his Rugby League journey at Siddal ARLFC and went on to join Wigan’s Scholarship programme aged 14. Progressing through the Academy ranks, Nicholson was named the Warriors Under-16s Player of the Year in 2019 and has been a key player for the Under-19s side.

“Coming back on loan to Thunder will hopefully give me an opportunity to play a good standard of rugby consistently to keep trying on improving my game,” he said.

“I was here for one game last season and the boys were a good set of lads to be around. It was a big step up from playing Academy Rugby League but it was a good experience that I enjoyed and I’m hoping to be able to get more of that this season.”

England Women Head Coach Craig Richards has selected a 31-strong National Performance Squad as preparations for the Rugby League World Cup this autumn continues, with the group meeting for the first time in 2022 on Saturday 15 January at Weetwood Sports Park, Leeds.

“It’s great to have been able to add Keara Bennett to the squad after she consistently performed for Leeds throughout 2021. We had several international debutants last season and there are certainly going to be opportunities for players to break into the side before the World Cup.

“We’ve been building towards this World Cup for a number of years now, but we know how crucial our preparations over the next nine months are going to be.”

    • Brad Singleton gives an update on the pre-season schedule as the Warriors gear up for the 2022 season.
    • Singleton: “I want us to be in a position where we can go and do some good stuff, and I want to be heavily involved in that.”
    • Hear more from Brad Singleton on Wigan TV, available HERE.

Brad Singleton talks pre-season, the mood in camp, new faces and personal aims for 2022 as he caught up with Wigan TV.

Singleton said: “I think the lads have been great, we’ve all been waiting for it, ready to rip in. Obviously pre-season is a tough time, it’s enjoyable but also has it’s tough moments but with it being after Christmas you know the games are around the corner. You see others playing the Boxing Day friendly, see other people playing on Sundays and you get the itch again. The sooner it comes around, the better.”

The forward is in double figures for pre-season schedules but he admits it’s all about building the foundations: “It comes around quick, I think this is my 12th pre-season full time in Super League so it does come around quick. No matter when you start, whether it’s October, November, December, once you get that slot it comes around rapid and before you know it, it’ll be Round 10.

“For us, and for me personally it’s about hitting the ground running, nailing the friendlies – that’s not saying wiping the floor with any team, it’s about ticking the right boxes and building the right foundations for a good year.”

    Brad-Singleton4-1-1024x683.jpg

He added: “I think we’re in a good place, we can’t win anything in pre-season but I think you can lose a season in pre-season, I can definitely say that hasn’t been done. This pre-season has set some good foundations, Matt [Peet] is a very smart bloke, he’s very respected within the camp and he’s got a hold of this group. He’s driving this culture, it’s working and everyone is buying in, for me that is everything.

“We’ll have to wait and see, I’m not going to say where we’ll be at the end but we’ll hopefully be capable for the big games.“

Singleton had plenty of praise for some of the new faces in the camp, as well as those who are familiar faces: “[Patrick] Mago, [Kaide] Ellis and [Cade] Cust they’ve all been great, they’ve complimented the group. I think Mago and Ellis will bring something, there’s some physicality there, they’ll bring something good and it will compliment our pack. The end game will be long, no matter what the competition for places, it’s great to have a little bit more experience in the pack, it’ll benefit us all.

“With all the young lads or those who have got three, four, five seasons deep, it’ll be good to see how they go. They’ve got the experience now, they’ve had the hurt and stuff like that which drives you, hopefully, the end product is great.”

The forward finished by laying down his aims for 2022: “For me personally it’s about enjoying it, enjoying the ride. Obviously a few years ago I went through the stuff with Toronto and it’s just remembering and being grateful for where I am. I am doing that but also on the back of that I also want to be one of the most consistent forwards out there, that’ll be my aim. I want us to be in a position where we can go and do some good stuff, and I want to be heavily involved in that.”

    • John Bateman spoke to Wigan TV on his pre-season so far, cultures and new faces.
    • Bateman: “It’s about us getting together and wanting to work as one.”
    • See the full interview with the Warriors loose forward on Wigan TV HERE.

John Bateman was full of praise for the togetherness of the squad as he reflected on a tough but enjoyable pre-season so far.

“Yeah it’s good being back around the boys,” he said, “it’s a bit different to what it was like last year and quite a few new lads, new faces – not just in the playing group but amongst the staff as well, but it’s good to be back.

“It’s been pretty tough to be fair, it’s been a lot different from what I’ve ever done before, there’s quite a lot of change. Lee Briers coming in, he’s taken quite a bit of it and he’s been really good. It’s been good with Matt, he’s brought a different element to it all but that’s been good. It’s been good but tough and it’s what we need.”

The Warriors recently took a trip to Altcar Training Camp as part of their pre-season schedule, something which Bateman relished: “It changed it up a little bit, a change of scenery and stuff was pretty good. I’ll be honest it was really tough, but it was good to spend some proper time with the lads, be around each other and get to know each other a lot better.

    SWF08940-1024x683.jpg

“Obviously it was a tough year last year with Covid restrictions so we didn’t get that time to bond. So, it was good being around the lads but there was some good tough stuff to do as well.”

The loose forward was impressed with the changes in culture around the squad: “Compared to last year, compared to where we were, the culture is more about us binding together and the fact we want to train for each other and play for each other.

”It’s not about being individuals and people wanting to do their own stuff, it’s about us getting together and wanting to work as one. That’s been big this year and I think going into the season it will be even bigger.”

    — Wigan Warriors 🍒⚪ (@WiganWarriorsRL) December 17, 2021

On the new additions to the squad, Bateman said: “I’ve obviously got to know them all, they’re my new teammates now and they’re a good set of lads. There’s quite a few different players, a lot of Aussies in there so it’s a bit of a culture change for them but it’s been good. I know how it feels going across the world to play your trade, so I’m just trying to help them out as much as I can but there are some really good players and I’m really looking forward to getting on the field with them.”

    • Zak Hardaker spoke to Wigan TV to update on his recovery and being back at Robin Park Arena.
    • Hardaker: “Everything that we didn’t have last year, we’ve gone on top of that and multiplied it by ten.”
    • Watch the full interview with Zak on Wigan TV HERE.

On his return to Robin Park Arena following surgery on a neck injury, Zak Hardaker described the training facility as having a ‘feel factor’ ahead of the 2022 Season.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said, I had a few weeks off after the England game watching the lads tear it in through Wigan TV and talking to the boys how hard it’s been, how enjoyable it’s been as well.

“It’s frustrating when you’re not in and all the boys are ripping in but it was great to have a good break and rest up after a tough year last year.”

Hardaker had dealt with some issues with a disc in his neck earlier in the season, he explains: “It was a weird one really, I did it halfway through last year, had a bulging disc in my neck and it was something and nothing – I had it for a few weeks and my left arm started not working. They sent me for a scan, it revealed that I had a bulging disc so I had a jab halfway through the year which saw me through until the end of the season really which was quite good – I was pain-free which was the main thing.”

However, the issue returned after the turn of the season: “I got picked for England, it’s always a great honour, I felt fine and then about the second week after the game I started feeling the pain that I’d had halfway through the year. I rang Jack our physio and said my left arm isn’t working properly again, I’m getting pins and needles, so I came in and they sent me for another scan which showed that the disc had come out even more.”

Road to recovery starts now. Looking forward to 2022 🍒⚪ @WiganWarriorsRL pic.twitter.com/YkDnf9D9Ak

    — Zak Hardaker (@zakhardaker1) December 11, 2021

Now that his surgery is complete, Hardaker is hoping to get back to work as soon as he can: “I’ll be in between Christmas and New Year for a couple of days there for a bit of extras, then back in fully on 3rd January so I’ll doing as much as I can and trying to get back out there with the boys as soon as possible.”

“It’s great, to me it’s the main thing really,” Hardaker said on his return to the training ground, “that’s what you miss when you’re not playing and especially when you’re injured. Being injured and being away from the group is even harder, especially when you see the boys doing the army camp last week.”

The Warriors number 3 was keen to get back after hearing of a lot of changes at the Club: “I talked to Matt Peet about it and he was really passionate and excited about year ahead, he’s involving the town, involving fans a lot more.

“There was a lot of anticipation about who was going to become the new Coach, what we’re going to do next year and how many signings we were going to make. I could see fans were getting a bit frustrated when the news was taking a bit of time to come out but just being around the place – the fans won’t get to experience it but the feel good factor around the place is totally different to last year.

“There’s new posters up, I know it doesn’t sound a lot but with MyProtein, the gym has all changed around, the changing rooms are different, there’s lists up of what we’re having for food. Everything that we didn’t have last year, we’ve gone on top of that and multiplied it by ten really.”

🏋 Prior to our lads returning to pre-season training this week, our Matrix gym at Robin Park Arena had a reshuffle to freshen things up!

🤝 Thanks to the guys at @MatrixFitnessUK for helping us out!#WWRL pic.twitter.com/Bu7qlYCFaX

    — Wigan Warriors 🍒⚪ (@WiganWarriorsRL) November 18, 2021

He added: “As a professional outfit and a professional Rugby player, to see the Club going through to make it as professional as they can, to make it enjoyable being here, it makes you as a player want to be here, to enjoy yourself, play as well as you can for the Club – it’s been brilliant.”

Hardaker was also impressed with the new Coaching outfit: “Matt Peet has been here for a number of years, for him to be Head Coach it’s going to be different but you know the person quite well so it’s not that difficult. Lee Briers seems a good guy, he’s taken the attacking duties and Lockers is defence.

“As much as it is new, there is quite a lot of old in it but there’s new themes, the whole ethos around the town of Wigan itself has changed. That’s something I’ve noticed away from the training camp and just coming in today, seeing everyone and how they go about things, timings and schedules have all changed.”

See Zak and the rest of the Warriors back in action at the DW Stadium with a 2022 season ticket. The early bird deadline ends on Friday 31st December, don’t delay – get yours today. All information on season tickets including pricing and how to buy can be found HERE.

  12. A Christmas Eve message from our Club Chaplain, Glen Rickard…

Three little words that strike fear into the heart of many parents on Christmas Eve are, “Some assembly required”! We still have our daughter’s “toy kitchen” that we unboxed late on Christmas Eve so many years ago. I see it in our loft occasionally and it still gives me cold sweats! All those pieces, nuts, bolts and stickers. The instructions were written in ancient Egyptian (well they were to me!), and why is it that there always seems to be one (or two) pieces missing and you don’t own the power tool, or large hammer, that seems to be needed? I recall the epic struggle that went on that evening. It was almost one in the morning when I finally said to my wife “can I give you a lift love”?

Seriously, I think that every one of us (if we are honest) need a bit of fixing up. We need the kindness and help of those near to us, to reassemble the disconnected and sometimes broken bits of our world. Christmas is a good time to recognise, that for ourselves and those we love, “some assembly is required”. Assembly or reassembly means connection and relationship, preferably done with kindness – no power tools allowed!

Modern society drives us towards achieving more and more, while connection, face to face, heart to heart, is so often relegated to a post, or tweet on social media (Covid hasn’t helped!) Achievement, done in the right way, is not a bad thing but it’s no substitute for connection and relationship. I know people who have achieved well, but feel isolated and lonely. I know hardly anyone who has cultivated great friendships and devoted themselves to their family, who have had a bad life. Food for thought! So, I wish to encourage us all, this Christmas, to make an effort to connect. Connection helps develop full and satisfied lives. Connection, however, means giving your time.

Time is the greatest thing, the most valuable gift that you can give someone this Christmas. Time is the most valuable thing that we have. The only thing that you will eventually run out of is time. Take time to visit, to ring, take time to listen, to smile, to embrace. In all the tinsel, rush, noise and stress, give a loved one some of your time. Take time to connect and show how much you care. Christmas is time to give. It’s not so much about the money we spend as the life and love we give out. Connecting, with love brings healing and wholeness. It’s where true joy is felt. It’s what we were made for, need and crave. This Christmas, be someone who uses their time to connect and build relationship. Don’t forget though, that those around you carry the sticker “some assembly required”.

You, our fans are amazing! We appreciate you and the wonderful support that you have shown through 2021. You truly are “Ancient and Loyal”. Thank you. We hope that you will also take time to connect with us, next year, during the new season.

Christmas is a time when Christians believe that God sent His Son Jesus, so that through Him we can reconnect to God, the great reassembler. If you feel that “some assembly is required” in your world this Christmas, why not invite Jesus into your heart and home. He carries a complete set of reassembly instructions.

I wish you a Happy Christmas and a joyous New Year.
