    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors Women were beaten narrowly by St Helens Women at Robin Park Arena.
    • Despite a second half try from Anna Davies to reduce the points difference, the Warriors fell short in a spirited display.
    • FT | Wigan Warriors Women 4-12 St Helens Women.

Wigan Warriors Women fell to a 12-4 defeat to St Helens Women in a hard-fought contest at Robin Park Arena.

Laureane Biville started at centre as she made her first appearance for the Warriors since re-signing for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Despite Anna Davies’ second half try, the Warriors fell short after Saints scored through Faye Gaskin and Phoebe Hook in the opening 40 minutes.

    Report

The Warriors were forced into defending their own try line in the opening stages, and despite keeping Saints out in the first set, the visitors worked the ball wide to Gaskin who dummied her way through a gap to score. Amy Taylor added the extras to kick Saints into a 6-0 lead after seven minutes.

Wigan responded positively to going behind, and after back-to-back penalties for dissent and offside, the Warriors pinned Saints to their try line but the visitors defended the kick to survive.

An intense battle unfolded at Robin Park Arena, and after successive big hits from Mary Coleman and Grace Banks to force the knock on, the Warriors broke forward through Biville and Beri Salihi, however, Saints were equal once more in defence.

As the weather conditions worsened, Saints advanced 20m out before quick passes from left to right created space for Hook to dive over. Taylor was accurate once more from the tee to increase the visitors’ advantage to 12-0 after 30 minutes.

Despite trailing 12-0 at the break, the Warriors restarted strongly as big tackles from Molly Jones and Victoria Molyneux was followed up with a stray pass into touch to gift Wigan possession 35m out.

The impressive start continued, and after forcing a knock on half way, a strong carry from Beville took the Warriors into dangerous territory but nothing followed as Saints regained possession on the final tackle.

The Warriors continued to apply pressure to the Saints defence, and after a strong forward carry took Wigan 10m out on the final tackle, the ball was worked swiftly out wide to Davies who powered through multiple tacklers to score. The resulting kick was narrowly wide, as the Warriors trailed 12-4 with 20 minutes remaining.

As injury stoppages and handling errors halted Wigan’s momentum, the Cherry and Whites were forced into defending their try line as Saints looked to add a third try in the closing stages.

Despite a strong last ditch tackle from the Warriors to force a knock on with minutes to go, the referee’s whistle brought the game to an end as Wigan were beaten in a valiant performance.

    • Patrick Mago said the Warriors ‘enjoyed’ a big victory over Hull KR at the DW Stadium on Friday night.
    • Mago: “Wins like that really bring us together and obviously scoring a try in front of that crowd is definitely one to remember.”
    • See the full interview with Patrick Mago on Wigan TV HERE.

Wigan forward Patrick Mago reflected as he scored his first try of 2023 in Wigan’s high-scoring win over Hull KR at the DW Stadium on Friday night.

“It was a really good game and the boys put in a good performance,” he said, “We knew they would come out strong but with a different team as well so we just wanted to focus on ourselves, put in a good performance for ourselves and we enjoyed that one.”

Mago crashed over for a try in the 66th minute to mark his first score this year: “It’s definitely not common for me but I enjoyed it. Harry spoke to me just before that and said hit me on the out and all I had to do was catch the ball and put it down so it was good.”

He added: “Wins like that really bring us together and obviously scoring a try in front of that crowd is definitely one to remember.”

Speaking on preparations earlier this week, Mago said: “At the start of the week we put a lot of focus on ourselves. We knew we wouldn’t be coming up against the same team from the other few games, we know they’re preparing for the Challenge Cup and we really just wanted to come out and put a good performance in.

Throughout the whole week we just made sure we were doing the little things right and making sure we played our best footy.”

Finally, the Warriors prop forward looks ahead to two-weeks preparation before Round 22: “We’re going to do a bit of camping and training off-site next week as well as a few days off. It’s important for the boys to freshen up our bodies and come in ready to face Hull FC the following week.”

Get tickets for our next fixture in Betfred Super League at home to Hull FC on Friday 18th August (8pm K.O.) from the DW Stadium Ticket Office (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) or online HERE.

    • Jai Field spoke to Wigan TV after scoring a second half hat-trick in Wigan’s 64-6 win over Hull KR.
    • Field: “I know we scored a lot of tries but they were still competing on every play, still chasing back and making it hard for us to get over the line.”
    • FT | Wigan Warriors 64-6 Hull KR.

Jai Field said Wigan ‘reaped the rewards’ after a professional display saw them cement their second place spot in the league table with another two points.

Summarising after the full time hooter, Field said: “It was a bit high scoring but it wasn’t really the focus at all. It was a bit of a tricky game, not knowing what sort of team they were going to turn up with.

“The focus really was about our defence and turning up with a good attitude after leaking a couple of tries late last week but it is always enjoyable to score a few tries like that.”

Reflecting on the opposition, he said: “It was about focusing on ourselves. They still turned up with a good attitude and a lot of energy and they did scramble hard. I know we scored a lot of tries but they were still competing on every play, still chasing back and making it hard for us to get over the line.

“It was more about worrying about what we could control and playing what was in front of us.”

The Warriors full-back crossed for a hat-trick of tries in the space of six minutes at the DW Stadium: “I was just supporting up the middle there, our forwards laid a good platform and we got a lot of quick rucks so we were just reaping the rewards in the end.”

The Warriors now go in to a week off before facing Hull FC at the DW Stadium on Friday 18th August: “Next week is a chance to freshen up and doing the right things, spend some time with friends and family and get ourselves right for the back end of the year.”

    • Matt Peet praised his side’s professionalism following Wigan Warriors’ victory over Hull KR at the DW Stadium.
    • Peet: “It was a professional job in what was a different sort of challenge for us.”
    • FT | Wigan Warriors 64-6 Hull KR.

Matt Peet praised Wigan Warriors’ professionalism in a 64-6 victory over Hull KR at the DW Stadium.

Providing an update on Morgan Smithies and Cade Cust, Peet said: “Morgan is fine. He failed his HIA so we just had to the right the thing in following the correct protocols. Cade will need to be assessed as we don’t know what it is yet.”

Speaking on the performance, Peet said: “It was a professional job in what was a different sort of challenge for us. It was quite difficult to prepare the group, but the lads said what they wanted to get out the game and how they wanted to play it. It was a pleasing and pretty consistent performance.”

On the attacking display, Peet added: “We scored some fantastic tries and played some entertaining rugby. It wasn’t just the tries, I thought some of the pieces of play that didn’t result in tries showed how great our skill is. All that though came off the back of the effort in defence and people earning the right to play.”

😮‍💨 How about this try from Harry Smith?!

Praising Jake Wardle, who scored the Warriors’ third try of the match, Peet said: “Jake Wardle was outstanding. All of our backline played well but I think Jake goes under the radar in his technical ability as a centre. He can beat people on the inside, the outside, and I just thought his performance was excellent.”

When asked about possibly rotating his side, Peet said: “There was temptation to freshen people up and it was something that we discussed at length, but our players wanted to play and build momentum. Every time you take someone out it can add pressure so the best approach is to start strong, remain as professional as possible, and then we could take players out throughout the game.”

Speaking on Hull KR, Peet said: “I want to pay credit to Hull KR who brought a young squad to fulfil the Reserve fixture. Also the young lads that played the first team match were very spirited, and the lads they brought in on loan were committed to the cause and deserve credit as well.”

Sam Powell came back from injury to start in the Warriors Reserves 74-12 victory over Hull KR earlier in the evening, and speaking on his return, Peet said: “I’m really proud of Sam as he applied himself exactly how we knew he would. We felt it was more important that he got more minutes under his belt playing in that match, and he never once batted an eyelid.”

Looking ahead to the one-week break from Super League action, Peet said: “The lads will be back in on Monday to train until Wednesday, but then they will get a long weekend after that before we are back in to prepare for Hull FC.”

    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors take victory against Hull KR.
    • Abbas Miski and Jai Field both scored hat-tricks, with a collective seven of the Warriors’ 12 tries on the night.
    • FT | Wigan Warriors 64-6 Hull KR.

The Cherry and Whites cemented their place in second place with victory against Hull KR, scoring 12 tries in the Super League fixture.

Tyler Dupree made his first start for the Warriors, as Abbas Miski and Jai Field scored hat-tricks among seven different scorers for the home side to complete a dominating win at the DW Stadium.

    Report

The best chances of the opening exchanges came the way of the Warriors, as Jai Field looked
to have been on his way from distance before play was halted for a forward pass. Shortly
after, Wigan were in once again when Liam Marshall found his way through the Rovers line,
until the ball slipped out of his hands 20 metres out.

After twelve minutes the Warriors’ patience paid off. Toby King capitalised on an opening of
space on the right-hand side, before setting up Abbas Miski who touched down in the corner.
Harry Smith added the extras from out wide to make it 6-0.

The lead was extended just over 10 minutes later, when some sublime work from Bevan
French saw the Australian weave his way through the away team from inside his own half,
before cleverley passing inside to Miski to score his second of the game.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to cross once again when Jake Wardle fooled the Robins’
defence with a brilliant dummy, diving over to the left of the posts. Smith kicked the resulting
conversion, making the score 16-0 near the half-hour mark.

The Cherry and Whites were finding their groove and showing the young away side no
mercy, with Abbas Miski scoring once again to seal a first-half hat trick. Kai Pearce-Paul did
well to break through, unselfishly assisting the winger on the right-hand side to score
successive hat tricks in Super League matches.

Toby King then joined the growing list of Warriors on the scoresheet, as Jai Field broke
through with options on either shoulder before playing in the centre to cross over. Smith was
good from the tee again, giving Wigan a 26-0 lead heading towards the break.

However, as the hooter sounded with the ball in Hull KR hands, a stabbed kick through the
middle of the home side’s defence was dived upon by Jack Walker to score, with Rowan
Milnes’ kick making it 26-6 half-time.

A quick response from the Warriors saw a spectacular team try after the break. Smith finished
off a passing move down the left hand side involving Marshall, Field and Wardle before
converting his own try in front of the South Stand.

The Warriors’ attack was relentless, with Field’s pass again finding Miski to score his fourth
of the night. It was the Lebanese winger’s 18th try in as many games, as he became the club’s
joint top scorer of the Super League season.

A first try of the year then came the way of Patrick Mago, with Smith converting the prop’s
burst through the Robins’ line. In quick succession, Marshall once again broke down the left
before passing inside for Field, making it 46-6 with 10 minutes of the game to go.

The tries were coming thick and fast for Wigan and Field in particular, who in the next five
minutes crossed twice to join Miski in completing a hat trick. With help from both flanks, he
was assisted once by Marshall on the left and then French with Smith good from the tee on
    each occasion.

Marshall then scored the 12th and final try of the night for Matt Peet’s side, with Smith again
converting to make the full-time score 64-4, in a tremendous showing at the DW Stadium for
    the Cherry and Whites.

    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors Reserves scored 13 tries to defeat Hull KR Reserves at Robin Park Arena.
    • Jacob Douglas scored a hat-trick in each half as the Warriors remain top of the table and unbeaten after 11 matches.
    • FT | Wigan Warriors Reserves 74-12 Hull KR Reserves.

Wigan Warriors Reserves produced a dominant display to defeat Hull KR Reserves 74-12 at Robin Park Arena.

Jacob Douglas scored a hat-trick in each half as the Warriors crossed 13 times to record a ninth consecutive victory.

Sam Powell returned from injury to play his first minutes since the start of June, along with Ryan Hampshire and Iain Thornley who each scored in the first half.

    Report

The Warriors started strongly, and after forcing a goal line drop out in the opening minute, play was worked patiently out wide to Nathan Lowe who set Jacob Douglas up to score in the corner. Hampshire extended the lead with a fantastic kick from the touchline with three minutes on the clock.

Wigan continued to assert pressure on the Hull KR defence, and shortly after Kavan Rothwell almost crashed over from close range, a fantastic 50m break from Jack Farrimond resulted in Powell setting up Hampshire to touch down in the corner.

Douglas then scored twice in four minutes to complete his hat-trick after 22 minutes. First Farrimond’s perfectly-weighted pass set the winger up go over in the corner, before Lowe picked Douglas out once more on the left wing to make the score 22-0.

Hull KR hit-back with two converted tries in six minutes to reduce the score to 22-12. Alex Argent-Moss first went over, before Jack Potter’s grubber kick was touched down by James Farrar on the right wing.

The Warriors extended their lead before the break when Thornley powered over beneath the sticks. Farrimond successfully added the extras to give Wigan a 28-12 advantage at the interval.

Douglas touched down his fourth try immediately after the restart following some excellent play from Zach Eckersley, and the duo repeated the move with the same outcome after 47 minutes to extend the Warriors’ lead to 40-12.

Wigan continued to dominate and two tries in four minutes took the Warriors past 50 points. First Lowe cut-back inside to power over, and then (name) used his strength to fend off a tackle and touch down while under pressure. Farrimond was successful with both kicks to make the score 52-12.

The tries kept coming at Robin Park Arena as Douglas scored his sixth with an excellent acrobatic finish on the hour, before Eckersley broke free on the wing to pass inside to Farrimond for a well-deserved try. The scrum half slotted the kick to take his points total to 20.

The Warriors scored their 13th, and final, try of the match after 71 minutes when Farrimond’s looping pass set Reagan Sumner up to touch down for an unconverted score on the right wing.

Despite a spell of late pressure on the Wigan try line from Hull KR, the visitors were unable to score any second half points as the Warriors earnt a deserving 74-12 win.

First Team Head Coach, Matt Peet, said: “All the teams trained together and enjoyed the session, it was really well organised by the Club. All our volunteer coaches, alongside professional coaches all came together to provide a good session for all those Wigan players.

“It makes you proud, we’re in the business of winning games and winning trophies but alongside that this Club has an impact on so many lives.”

Assistant Coach, Thomas Leuluai added: “It’s good to be involved. Last year it was a fantastic event and it was something that we wanted to keep doing moving forwards. Last year I was involved as a player, so here in a different role this time but everyone seems to be enjoying it and that is what’s important.”

Transition Coach, John Duffy: “It’s good to see the Club connected all the way through all the teams. It offers some good insight for us as Coaches to see what everyone is doing across the Club and it’s also a good insight for all the players to see what we do across each bit of development.”

Warriors Wheelchair player, Declan Roberts also said: “Everybody seems to be enjoying themselves and getting stuck into the collisions which is the fun and most important part. There’s been quite a few big collisions, some nice passing and some nice tries scored. It’s great to see everyone down, getting involved but also embracing the Wheelchair game too as part of this Club.”

    • Kaide Ellis looks ahead to Wigan Warriors’ Super League clash against Hull KR on Friday night.
    • Ellis: “We knocked Leigh off last weekend with an impressive win, and two more points on Friday could be crucial.”
    • Matt Peet also previewed Friday night’s fixture with Hull KR which can be read HERE.

Wigan Warriors prop forward Kaide Ellis looks ahead to Friday night’s Super League clash against Hull KR.

Looking ahead to the fixture at the DW Stadium, Ellis said: “We are expecting a tough game as the three previous times we have played Hull KR they’ve proven to be very physical and challenging. It won’t be about who Hull KR name or don’t name, it will just be about us.”

Reflecting on last weekend’s 44-18 victory over Leigh Leopards, Ellis added: “We were happy but we weren’t fully satisfied. We played well but I thought in the back end of the game we gave away two easy tries which made it a little disappointing.”

Ellis continued: “This is an important period for us going into the break as a week off can be quite a long turnaround. We knocked Leigh off last weekend with an impressive win, and two more points on Friday could be crucial.”

Speaking on the motivation within the squad, Ellis said: “We had conversations after being knocked out the Challenge Cup. We were unlucky not to get the trip down to Wembley, but if we channel our disappointments in the right way, and use it in the right areas to get better, then it makes you hungry.”

On personal improvement, Ellis added: “The more I play, the better I’ll get. The coaching staff here are terrific and Matty himself is getting the best out of me. He’s always having conversations with me, he knows what I need to do, and he’s always pushing and challenging me which is what I need.”

Ellis, along with the rest of the Warriors First Team, took part in the one club training session on Monday night. More than 200 players from many of the club’s teams trained together at different stations, which included touch, wheelchair rugby, gym and yoga.

Commenting on the one club training session, Ellis said: “It was a great turnout and it’s great mixing with other players who you don’t already know and seeing what they can do. It was surprising seeing how many teams the club has and how many players play for Wigan, but it speaks volumes on how big the club is.

“I have a lot of admiration for the Wheelchair Team. I had a go playing and found it tough so I take my hat off to them for being able to play it so well. Overall it was just good for the club culture in making all the teams feel a part of Wigan Warriors.”

Match tickets for Friday’s clash remain on sale at the DW Stadium Ticket Office (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) or online HERE. More ticketing information can be found HERE.

    • Matt Peet looks ahead to Friday night’s Super League Round 21 clash against Hull KR.
    • Peet: “The lads are in good shape – our 13 on 13 at the minute are two very good sides.”
    • Wigan Warriors v Hull KR, DW Stadium, Friday 4 August, 8pm.

Matt Peet told the press that the Warriors are in ‘good shape’ ahead of Friday’s Super League clash against Hull KR at the DW Stadium.

Speaking on the fitness of the squad, Peet said: “There’s no new injuries. Ethan [Havard] and Sam Powell will come back into contention in the next week or two. Sam’s feeling a new lease of life and he’s looking forward to getting some rugby under his belt.

“The lads are in good shape – our 13 on 13 at the minute are two very good sides. Everyone’s eager to play and we need to build momentum as a group going into the end of the season.”

On the possibility of rotating players on Friday night, Peet said: “This might be a week where we take Liam Byrne out of the firing line. He’s been playing pretty busted for most of the season so this two-week period will be a good opportunity to rest him and get some quality work around his injury to get him stronger for the backend.”

Reflecting on the Warriors’ victory over Leigh Leopards last time out, Peet said: “It had been a challenging week so to get the win and show that reaction was important. It was a performance I was really, really proud of.”

Looking ahead to Friday’s fixture with Hull KR, Peet said: “It’s a stand-alone fixture now which I won’t compare to any other games. We can’t concern ourselves too much on what team Hull KR will play – an important two points are at stake. This will bring a different challenge because we won’t know know the personnel, so we will just concentrate on ourselves.”

Speaking on the Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to Hull KR, Peet added: “Unfortunately we can’t get that one back, so we have to move forwards. The semi-final is out of our minds now, and we have our own goals that we are building towards for the back end of the season. The best way we can make ourselves feel better is by playing the best we can.”

Tickets for Friday’s clash against Hull KR are available to purchase from the DW Stadium Ticket Office, or online HERE. Supporters who purchase a ticket for our home fixture against Hull FC on Friday 18 August at the same time, will receive this for half price.
