  5. England Head Coach Shaun Wane has named his 20-player squad for this weekend’s mid-season international.Wigan’s John Bateman and Liam Farrell named to take on Combined Nations All Stars.Get your tickets for the double header at the Halliwell Jones Stadium HERE. England Head Coach Shaun Wane has named a 20-strong squad for Saturday’s (18 June) mid-season international against the Combined Nations All Stars in Warrington with Wigan’s John Bateman and Liam Farrell included. The squad includes in-form forwards Michael McIlorum, the Catalans Dragons hooker whose last appearance in an England jersey was against France during the 2013 World Cup, and his Dragons colleague Mike McMeeken who last featured for England in the 2017 World Cup. There’s a call-up too for the uncapped St Helens’ second-row Joe Batchelor. Batchelor’s St Helens teammates Morgan Knowles, Jonny Lomax and Mark Percival miss out through injury, but utility back Jack Welsby is one of five Saints included and will make his international debut. Like Welsby, Warrington Wolves’ Matty Ashton is another player who has progressed through the England talent pathway to be included in the senior squad for the first time. The Warrington flyer is one of five Wolves players selected to play on home turf, with Wane drawing upon nine of the Betfred Super League’s 12 clubs in his selection. Sam Tomkins, the third Catalans Dragons player selected, will again captain the side. No NRL players were available for selection. England Head Coach Shaun Wane said: “Sam epitomises everything that a captain should be – a natural leader who’s always in the thick of the action. He’s a very smart player. “I’ve every confidence in every player selected. Some need no introduction and have earned a recall, others are new to the squad and are also in on merit. They all have the ability to perform at this level and this is their chance to show myself and England supporters what they can do.” England squad Matty Ashton (Warrington Wolves), Joe Batchelor (St Helens), John Bateman (Wigan Warriors), Mike Cooper (Warrington Wolves), Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors), Ryan Hall (Hull KR), Matty Lees (St Helens), Michael McIlorum, Mike McMeeken (both Catalans Dragons), Paul McShane (Castleford Tigers), Tommy Makinson (St Helens), Mikolaj Oledzki (Leeds Rhinos), Joe Philbin, Stefan Ratchford (both Warrington Wolves), Sam Tomkins (Catalans Dragons, Captain), Alex Walmsley (St Helens), Jake Wardle (Huddersfield Giants), Kallum Watkins (Salford Red Devils), Jack Welsby (St Helens), George Williams (Warrington Wolves) The All Stars fixture revives a Rugby League tradition which stretches back to the Other Nationalities team of the early 20th century, with the team made up of players from across the Rugby League world who are currently playing in the northern hemisphere. Coaching the All Stars this year will be Rugby League legend Ellery Hanley MBE, who goes head-to-head with his former Wigan and Leeds team-mate Shaun Wane. Earlier this Rugby League supporters in England and around the world rallied to support Tonga following the Pacific nation’s devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami in January. On Saturday both sides will wear unique, Tonga-inspired shirts for the match. Supporters can continue to raise funds for those affected by purchasing replica shirts which are on sale now. £10 from each shirt sale will be donated to a tsunami relief fund. England versus the Combined Nations All Stars is part of a double-header which also sees England Women taking on France. Tickets for the men’s and women’s double-header at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium are available to buy now from only £20 Adults and £10 Under 16s at eticketing.co.uk/rugbyleague. 6. Wigan Warriors Reserves continue unbeaten run with win over Warrington Wolves.Warriors scored seven tries as they eased to victory.FT | Wigan Warriors 40-6 Warrington Wolves. The Reserves continued their perfect start to the season with a comfortable 40-6 victory over Warrington Wolves Reserves at Robin Park Arena on a summery Saturday afternoon. Both sides fielded an array of Super League experience and started brightly, the Wolves went closest to the opening score inside five minutes as Greg Minikin raced down the wing and a superb chase from Adam Jones saw him catch the winger and prevent the try. However, the visitors did open the scoring as Daniel Brewin dived over from close range in the 24th minute with Leon Hayes converting for a 6-0 lead. The lead lasted just three minutes as Jack Bibby spied a gap in the Wolves defence and sent a grubber kick through before collecting and crossing for the try with Adam Jones converting to level at 6-6. Wigan completed the turnaround on 32 minutes as a clever passing play saw the ball find Logan Astley who powered over for a try which Jones improved for 12-6. After success on the left side from Bibby earlier on, Jones tried his luck on the far side with a grubber kick and it bounced perfectly for him to collect and touchdown for a try which he converted for a strong 18-6 lead into the half-time interval. The Wigan spree continued in the second half with a try on the left wing from Ben O’Keefe which he converted superbly from the touchline to extend the lead to 24-6 in the 47th minute. Warrington were soon found out on the near side with Tom Mitchell diving over in the corner after collecting a rapid offload from Alex Sutton, O’Keefe converting for 30-6 with 53 minutes played. The pacy passing of the Warriors soon paid off again as Mitchell found space on the wing to finish off a clever cross-field move and claim his second try of the afternoon, O’Keefe conversion sadly cannoned back off the post at 34-6. The best try of the afternoon proved to be the last as Kieran Tyrer intercepted a pass just inside his own half and raced down the field to cross for a stunning try, O’Keefe’s conversion sailed through the posts backed by a roar from the Warriors fans who celebrated as the referee blew the final whistle seconds later to signal a huge 40-6 win. 8. Liam Marshall wins two May player awards.Winger takes Try of the Month award whilst sharing Player of the Month award with Harry Smith. Both awards were voted by Wigan fans. Wigan Warriors winger Liam Marshall has won Try of the Month for May, whilst sharing a joint Player of the Month award with Harry Smith. Voted for by Warriors fans, Marshall takes home the two awards after a terrific month of action. The winger has had an electric month for the Warriors, starting with the Challenge Cup Semi Final against St Helens. Marshall opened the scoring with an acrobatic effort before booking Wigan’s place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a super scoring effort at Elland Road. Marshall was also on the scoresheet as Wigan lost to Hull but it was his winning try against Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup Final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which has captured the eye and earns him Try of the Month for May. The superb try in the Challenge Cup Final came courtesy of a great grubber kick through from Harry Smith. The pair have been linking up magnificently this season, with both in fine form individually too and in a first in it’s history – the Player of the Month award was tied between Liam Marshall and Harry Smith. You can see how the duo reacted to the news HERE as they were presented with their award on Wigan TV. The post Marshall shines in May awards appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. 9. The Warriors came out winners in a top of the table clash at Robin Park Leisure Centre on Sunday. After being named in the latest England squad, Declan Roberts and Adam Rigby both crossed for four tries each.FT | Wigan Warriors 64-48 Halifax Panthers. Wigan kicked off the second half of the Wheelchair Super League season in a thrilling top of the table clash against Halifax Panthers at Robin Park Leisure Centre on Sunday. It was the Away side that took an early lead with two tries by Wayne Boardman catching Wigan cold. Rob Hawkins added the extras with two successful conversions to make it 12-0 within 6 minutes. The Cherry & Whites were able to get their scoring underway when Declan Roberts was able to waltz through the defence and touchdown. This was improved with back to back tries by Adam Rigby, the first in the left corner off Martin Norris, the second in the opposite corner after a left to right passing move saw D. Roberts supply the final pass. Having missed his first attempt, D. Roberts was able to convert both tries and give Wigan a 16-12 lead. Halifax finished the first phase of the season top of the table, and with three quick fire tries they showed why. A neat cut out pass by Boardman put Nathan Holmes away down the left flank, before Rob Hawkins opened his account with a try in the same corner. Holmes then doubled his tally with a try through the middle as he crashed over to score. ‘Fax had now regained control to lead 28-16. After 20 minutes, Phil Roberts thrust new recruit Lenny Izzard into the action and it was only a matter of minutes before he was crossing the try line, D. Roberts providing the killer pass to put him in at the corner. That is what you call a successful interchange. With Wigan on the attack and unprepared to take the tackle, they started to offload the ball. The handling was slick and decisive, and with the Panthers having to scramble from left to right, it only needed one little gap for Rigby to break the line and complete his hat trick. With a successful kick, D. Roberts tied the scores at 28 apiece. The final word of the half went to the visitors as they were able to score again in the left corner, this time it was a looped pass that caught out the Wigan defence. Making it 5 from 6 conversions, Hawkins took the half time score to 34-28 in his sides favour. After a slow start to the first half, Wigan weren’t going to make the same mistake again. Looking to tie the scores for the third time in the game, D. Roberts passed to the supporting Chris Greenhalgh down the right touchline. Showing great hands, Greenhalgh did well to take in the pass and remain composed enough to evade the tackler and touchdown. Scoring his fourth of the afternoon, Rigby found itself in space in the middle of the court and was well placed to put the Warriors back in charge. With D. Roberts continuing his success from the kicking tee, the score was now 40-34. Halifax were next to cross, Boardman also completing his hat-trick in an end to end game but taking the ball forward at pace, the Cherry & Whites were in again when D.Roberts scored to the left of the uprights. D.Roberts was then able to give Martin Norris the opportunity to score his first try of the game and extend Wigan’s lead to 14 points after an hour of play. Not to be outdone, the Panthers came back with two further tries to set up a grandstand finish. Hawkins was the first scorer, before Boardman took his personal tally to four, and with one of the kicks going between the posts, the Panthers were now just 4 points adrift with 10 minutes remaining. Sealing a Man of the Match performance, D. Roberts crossed twice more in the final 2 minutes, converting both tries, to take the game out of the reach of Halifax, but both teams should be proud of putting on an awesome display. The final score finished 64-48 to the Warriors. Gallery: Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Photo: John Baldwin Coach Reaction Once the dust had settled, Head Coach Phil Roberts had his say: “I was very pleased with our composure and resilience today after going a couple of scores down early on. It was an intense game that could have gone either way and was really in the balance until about the 70 minute mark. We played some superb rugby in spells and probably over-played in others, but it is reassuring to know that not only did we get the result, but that we still have improvement in us.” Wigan Warriors: Chris Greenhalgh, Martin Norris, Declan Roberts, Adam Rigby, Matt Wooloff. Interchanges: Reece Duddle, Ste Mort, Phil Roberts, Lenny Izzard, Shaun Gash. Tries: D. Roberts (4), Rigby (4), Izzard, Greenhalgh, Norris. Conversions: D. Roberts 10/11 Halifax Panthers: Wayne Boardman, Tom Martin, Tom Green, Rob Hawkins, Jordan Holt Interchanges: Nathan Holmes, Nathan Mulhall Tries: Boardman (4), Holmes (2), Hawkins (2), Martin Conversions: Hawkins 6/9 The Warriors next fixture is on 9th July when Wigan Warriors play London Roosters in the Magic Round, held at the National Basketball Centre. 10. Six young Warriors have been selected for the second of this year’s three-match Academy Origin series, at Salford on Sunday 26 June (K.O. 5pm). Jacob Douglas, Zach Eckersley, Harvie Hill, Junior Nsemba and Max Wood have all been selected in the Lancashire Squad with Wigan’s Ellis Hobson also selected for the Yorkshire squad. Paul Anderson, Head of England Pathways, has made four changes from the 21-player Lancashire squad that won the first encounter 56-34 at Widnes last month and eight to the Yorkshire squad hoping to level the series at the AJ Bell Stadium. Anderson brings in players from Super League heavyweights Hull FC, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, and Championship clubs Bradford Bulls and York City Knights. Among the newcomers is Hull FC’s powerful outside back Manoa Wacokecoke, a player with Fijian heritage who played his junior Rugby League for Cottingham Tigers. Linking up with Shane Eccles’ Lancashire squad for the first time are St Helens duo Ellis Archer and Jon Vaughan, Jamie Reddecliff of Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors’ Zach Eckersley. Head coach Eccles is a long-serving member of Wigan Warriors’ scholarship and academy systems, and will again be assisted by Warrington Wolves pair Tyrone McCarthy (Scholarship head coach) and Liam Myler (strength and conditioning). Yorkshire are coached by the Leeds Rhinos Academy coach and former England and Great Britain player Chev Walker. Working alongside Walker are Huddersfield Giants’ duo Tom Tsang and Adam Megretton. Paul Anderson, Head of England Pathways, said: “Game one was a high-scoring affair, but there were periods of real intensity – especially at the beginning. The challenge for these players is to maintain that intensity throughout. “I’ve had one-to-one reviews with every player who took the field at Widnes. There were positives in every individual performance, but players are accountable for themselves for the full 80 minutes. As part of their development, all players need to show that they have what it takes to perform at this level and understand what it takes to be an England player. “I’ve also made some changes this time, which means opportunities for other players to come in and show what they can do. As the series progresses we’ll see more cohesion and connectivity on the pitch, and a greater sense of togetherness off it thanks to residential camps in Warrington and Leeds. It’s important that our best players are exposed to the camp environment they might experience at senior level and can better understand the demands and expectations involved. “ He added: “Plus, all training sessions ahead of each Origin match will be held at Leeds Beckett University – a world class campus which reflects the ambitions of our development programme.” Lancashire 21 player squad Ellis Archer, McKenzie Buckley (both St Helens), Jack Darbyshire (Warrington Wolves), George Delaney, Kalan Devine (both St Helens), Aiden Doolan (Warrington Wolves), Jacob Douglas, Zach Eckersley (both Wigan Warriors), Ben Hartill, Leon Hayes (both Warrington Wolves), Sam Haynes (St Helens), Harvie Hill (Wigan Warriors), Ben Lane (St Helens), R’ichards Nsemba (Wigan Warriors), Jamie Reddecliff (Warrington Wolves), Jack Sinfield (Leeds Rhinos), Jake Thewlis, Nolan Tupea (both Warrington Wolves), Jon Vaughan, Leunbou Bardyell Wells (both St Helens), Max Wood (Wigan Warriors). Yorkshire 21 player squad Kai Armstrong (Hull FC), Bailey Arnold (Bradford Bulls), Denive Balmforth (Hull FC), Connor Barley (Hull Kingston Rovers), Alfie Edgell (Leeds Rhinos), George Flanagan Jnr (Bradford Bulls), Harrison Gilmore (Leeds Rhinos), Lucas Green (Warrington Wolves), Jake Higgins (Leeds Rhinos), Ellis Hobson (Wigan Warriors), Adam Holroyd (Warrington Wolves), Joseph Kellett (Bradford Bulls), Matt Laidlaw (Hull FC), Myles Lawford (Bradford Bulls), Riley Lumb (Leeds Rhinos), Lewis Martin, Sullivan Medford, Charlie Severs, Nick Staveley, Manoa Wacokecoke (all Hull FC), Toby Warren (York City Knights). Origin Academy has this year returned to its three-match format this summer following the enforced cancellation of the entire 2020 programme and a Covid-curtailed 2021. Academy Origin II follows Salford Red Devils home match against Wakefield Trinity, which kicks off at 3pm. The third and final encounter takes place at Wakefield on Sunday 24 July. England RL Academy is part of the RFL’s talent pathway, which also includes England Knights and the senior men’s squad. Several members of the England squad named recently be Shaun Wane are graduates of this pathway, including Leeds Rhinos’ Mikolaj Oledzki and Matty Lees of St Helens. 11. Two Warriors Women in action on first weekend of Internationals.Georgia Wilson started for England, with Carys Marsh at Interchange for Wales.England Women 32-6 Wales Women. Wigan Warriors Women’s Georgia Wilson and Carys Marsh came head-to-head on Sunday afternoon as England Women faced off against Wales Women at Pandy Park. It was a much improved performance from the Welsh outfit, having fallen to a 60-0 defeat to the same opposition this time last year, the scoreline was far more fitting in an absorbing contest in South Wales. Georgia Wilson started the game on the right wing and it was the right side that had all the early joy. England raced to a 20-0 lead on Welsh soil with a Fran Goldthorpe double, before Amy Hardcastle and Shona Hoyle also went over to extend the lead for the visitors. Carys Marsh featured off the bench for the Welsh side, who did get one back on the hour mark in response to a further England effort from Tara Jones. Leanne Burnell finished off a great move for Wales, converted by Amberley Ruck for 26-6 in England’s favour. It was a spirited effort from Wales, who continued to fight their corner and deny England opportunities but the away side did get a final effort on the board through Hollie Dodd in the dying minutes to confirm a 32-6 win for England. Next up for England Women, they face France on Saturday 18th June, in the first of the England double header live on Sky Sports. Wales welcome Italy to Pandy Park on Sunday 19th June, with the Italian side also coming off the back of a loss to Ireland. The post International Round Up appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. 12. Bevan French scored a hat-trick of tries against Salford for the second time in his Wigan career on Friday night.French: “I think they definitely came to play in the first half, and I felt like the ball was in play for a long time, everyone was pretty much out on their feet.“Watch match highlights on Wigan TV HERE. Not a subscriber? Join today from £5.99 per month. Bevan French starred in a ‘game of two halves’ performance on Friday night as Wigan ran out 30-12 winners against Salford Red Devils. French told Wigan TV after the game: “I think they definitely came to play in the first half, and I felt like the ball was in play for a long time, everyone was pretty much out on their feet. “It was good to see us turn up for the second half, we have to enjoy this week off now, it is still scary that we can play a game of two halves and sort of go from there, very happy with the win.” The full-back turned winger scored a second half hat-trick in the 30-12 win at the AJ Bell Stadium and picked up the player of the match award in the process but he thinks anyone could have got the award: “Marshy [Liam Marshall] again who is always on the scoreboard, Tommy [Thomas Leuluai] with his direction, Harry [Smith], Batty (John Bateman), and Willie [Isa] had a few assists. It is crazy, you could name everyone – they all did their job really well I was just lucky to get picked I think.” Some second half #WWRL #SLSALWIG pic.twitter.com/L32G78kjbB — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) June 10, 2022 When asked about the impressive rugby shown especially in the second half, French added: “Yeah we have sort of gelled together and it is just happening, we don’t really need to talk about where we are going, everyone just plays off the back of one another, it is a beautiful thing to be a part of. “You obviously have your generals and leaders directing your way to go but when everyone is on the same wavelength and flowing, it is crazy.” After a hectic first half of the season French comments on how crucial the week off will be: “It is good to come into the break second place on the ladder, we’ve got the [Challenge Cup] trophy as well so we have a well-earned rest now after the boys have invested a lot of energy into the first half of the season.” by Ryan Kuzio. 13. Wigan Warriors are delighted to confirm that both Liam Byrne and Ethan Havard have signed new contracts with the Club. Two rising stars in the forward line – Byrne has signed a new three-year deal, while Havard has put pen to paper for a further two years. The two prop forwards have had excellent 2022 seasons so far, having featured heavily for Matt Peet and becoming Challenge Cup winners. Byrne, 22, joined Wigan’s Academy from Cadishead Rhinos and has progressed ever since – becoming a Under-19s Grand Final winner, signing a professional contract, making his first team debut and playing 68 games for the Club. With one year remaining on his previous deal, this new contract for Byrne means he will stay at the Club at least until the end of 2025. On his new deal, Byrne said: “I’m very grateful to be extending my time at this great Club and looking forward to what the future holds for me personally and as a team.” Havard, 20, joined the Club from Wigan St Patricks ARLFC in 2016 and he soon went on to become an Academy Grand Final winner. Following his senior debut in 2019, the 6ft 3 forward has become a regular in the first team, making 51 appearances overall so far. His new deal will see him stay at Wigan at least until the end of 2024. On his signing for two more years, Havard said: “I’m really pleased and grateful to be extending my time at my hometown Club. Wigan is the perfect environment to help me develop my game and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me and the team.” On both Byrne and Havard, Head Coach Matt Peet said: “Liam has developed himself into a lead front rower which is testament to his hard work and dedication. He is a pleasure to work with and is someone we are really proud of. We look forward to seeing him develop further. “Ethan has a very professional approach to his game and has worked hard to achieve what he has so far. He is very determined to take his game to the next level which is exciting for him and the Club.” The post Byrne and Havard extend appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article
  14. Matt Peet gave his thoughts following Wigan’s win away at Salford Red Devils.Peet: “It was a game where both teams went toe to toe, but we were able to maintain it for longer.”FT | Salford Red Devils 12-30 Wigan Warriors. Matt Peet described an ‘intense game’ as Wigan put in a fantastic display to make it back-to-back Super League wins going into the International break. The Warriors led 6-0 at half time through a converted Harry Smith effort, before adding another 24-points in the second forty: “I know the obvious thing is that we broke away in the second half but I don’t think people should take their attention away from the intensity of that game in the first half. The quality of both teams, credit to Salford I thought they defended really well, they invested heavily in their defence and they forced us into errors.” He added: “There were a few things in the first half, we were quite lateral early in sets and tried to unleash some of our speed and get our offload game going without really going forward first. From the start of the second half we were a bit more direct, more patient and when we did move the ball there was a little bit more space to play.” The lads appreciate you all #WWRL #SLSALWIG pic.twitter.com/cQISP97EhA — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) June 10, 2022 Peet summarised the game: “The quality of both teams, credit to Salford I thought they defended really well, they invested heavily in their defence and they forced us into errors. It was a game where both teams went toe to toe, but we were able to maintain it for longer.” Bevan French linked up well with Jai Field on the night, with Liam Marshall also shining once more. On his standout players, Peet said: “Sky questioned me a lot about Jai and Bevan, which is fine, but I also thought there were a lot of other people who contributed to that performance. I thought Ethan Havard’s performance was outstanding. “I thought credit was due to our middle unit, both our back rowers were pretty relentless in how they performed. I think you always have to look at the middle of the field first.” The post Peet: Intense game appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article

Liam Marshall added a brace after the restart and Bevan French grabbed a hat-trick that took the game firmly away from Salford despite a late comeback from the home side in the dying minutes. Report The game started with both teams playing the percentages game by attacking conservatively and defending robustly and keeping their discipline with minimal mistakes, Wigan being the more flamboyant of the two in attack providing more offloads. Harry Smith, the man of the moment, was the danger man for Wigan and his opposite number Brodie Croft likewise for Salford. Both teams were neck and neck until Salford turned over possession in their half giving Wigan the advantage, a surgical pass from Harry Smith to Jake Bibby who fed Liam Marshall out wide who cut back inside, with all Salford eyes on Jai Field in support on the peripheral, Liam Marshall passed back inside to the supporting Harry Smith who crossed for the first try of the game on 10 minutes, converting himself to make it 6-0. Salford went close on the 22nd minute only for former Wigan flyer Joe Burgess to knock the ball dead resulting in a Wigan 20m tap. Not long after a determined Liam Farrell run got Wigan on the Salford line but they couldn’t capitalise on the field position. Wigan Warriors went into the changing rooms at half time leading by 6, with the game being tight and disciplined. The second half began with a minor scuffle and on 44 minutes Wigan attacked left on the 5th tackle with a power play, Harry Smith passed to Jai Field who gave a delayed pass to Jake Bibby who kicked the ball through with a perfectly weighted kick for Liam Marshall to scoop up and cross over the line in the corner. Harry Smith missing the conversion for 10-0. Salford got to the Wigan try line and looked to score only for a long pass from Andy Ackers to be intercepted by Thomas Leuluai who gave it to the supporting Jai Field. Field got to half way, giving it to Bevan French but he was tackled on Salford’s 40m losing the ball in the process providing the best piece of attacking play of the game so far. This proved to be a dress rehearsal for a few moments later when Bevan French caught a high kick in his own try line, turned the Salford defender inside out and then raced 50m giving the ball to Jai Field who in turn attracted a couple of chasing Salford defenders and then gave the ball back to French who crossed in the right corner on the 50 minute mark, Harry Smith converted taking the game to 16-0. Tyler Dupree broke through the Wigan defence and ran 40m getting Salford to within 20m of the Wigan line, a Kallum Watkins kick behind the defence saw Liam Marshall kick the ball dead resulting in a Wigan drop out under the sticks. Wigan dropped the ball out only for the Salford’s Ormondroyd to drop the ball in contact with the Wigan defenders. A Salford handling error on their own 25m saw them hand over possession to Wigan, the resulting scrum saw Bevan French go over in the corner for his second try of the game, Harry Smith failed to convert, but Wigan are moving up the gears taking the game to 20-0. On 59 minutes a wonderful passing move between Field, French and Isa saw Liam Marshall wrap around to the right wing and score in the corner. Shortly after with Wigan in full attacking flow, Harry Smith gave a looping pass out wide putting Willie Isa into space who gave it to Liam Marshall who broke down the right, Marshall hacked the ball back inside for the supporting Bevan French to gather and go underneath the sticks for his hat-trick try on 63 minutes, Harry Smith converted the effort to take the game to 30-0. Salford forced a goal line drop out on 72 minutes, a few blockbusting runs got Salford in a strong attacking position but couldn’t capitalise on it, turning the ball over to Wigan. Wigan then lost possession, from the Salford scrum Marc Sneyd kicked through forcing another goal line drop out. Desperate attacking saw Deon Cross gather a Ryan Brierley kick to grab a consolation try for Salford on 76 minutes, with Marc Sneyd converting before a rejuvenated Salford attacked the Wigan line and on 78 minutes with the game all but gone, Kallum Watkins gathered a Brodie Croft kick to add another. Marc Sneyd converted the late effort to take the game to 30-12 in Wigan’s favour but the comeback was too late and Wigan Warriors walked away with their 11th win of the season, taking them to second in the Betfred Super League table. 16. Wigan Warriors are delighted to announce that Liam Farrell has signed a new contract with the Club. The second rower has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal, which means Farrell will stay with the Club at least until the end of 2025. Starting off at Wigan St Patricks ARLFC, Farrell was signed by Wigan’s Scholarship system and went on to progress through the ranks to make his first team debut in 2010. That year, he ended a Super League Grand Final winner, and it was just the start of many years of success to follow. Farrell is a one-Club man who has had a glittering career so far – winning all there is to claim in the game – and is now one of the key leaders in the Wigan squad. His winning cabinet consists of one World Club Challenge, four Super League Grand Finals, three Challenge Cups, three League Leaders’ Shields, one Harry Sunderland Trophy and four Super League Dream Team appearances. So far, the 31-year-old has made 312 appearances for his hometown Club, scoring 126 tries – with his 80th minute match-winning touchdown in the Good Friday Derby against St Helens in 2011 going down as a part of Club folklore. Farrell, who had his testimonial year in the 2020 season, has also represented his country – playing for England at the 2013 World Cup and making 10 appearances overall. On his new deal, Farrell said: “It was an easy decision. I approached the Club and said I’d like to stay. It was a pretty easy process. I am very happy to be here for another three years. It’s looking like it’s going to keep me as a one-Club man which I’m very happy about. “To have had the career I’ve had so far and hopefully some bright years ahead of us as well, I’m very pleased. “I have fond memories of playing in Finals and Cup Finals and I’d like to think there’s quite a few to come as well with the healthy young talent and experience we’ve got. “I wouldn’t wish for anything than being here. Being a little lad and coming in the stands with my mum and dad when I was eight or nine, going on to be a ball boy and playing in the Academy, I’m probably a typical Wigan lad who wanted to play for Wigan and have been very fortunate enough to do that. “I came in just at the right time. I was around the fringes in 2009 and Madge [Michael Maguire] liked what he saw of me and he put me in. To go on and play in the Grand Final in 2010 was unbelievable and there’s been so much success off that back of it and I feel very privileged.” Head Coach, Matt Peet, added: “Liam is enjoying another outstanding season, his consistent levels of performance are down to his relentless dedication and excellence in his preparation. He is an important leader for the Club which is a role he takes great pride in.” The post Farrell signs new deal appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article

It’s a no excuses approach.” On this week’s opposition, Salford, he said: “I think Salford at their best are a really quality team. We judge them on their two performances against us this year and both games have been as tough as any we’ve had. If you look at the last one there was time where they carved us up for fun, posted tries and they have the ability to do that if you’re off the mark. The attacking threats they’ve got, particularly through the backline, you know that if you start slow or have any inconsistencies in your defence they are a team that will expose it.” Read more from the Warriors boss ahead of Friday’s game HERE. 23. Harry Smith gave his thoughts ahead of Round 15 of Betfred Super League this Friday.Smith: “If we just keep producing what we’re doing and getting our own things right, we can hopefully get a good win.”Salford Red Devils v Wigan Warriors, Friday 10th June, 8pm K.O. Harry Smith said Wigan need to ’empty their tanks and give 100% effort’ as the Cherry & Whites head into their final Betfred Super League game before the International break. Speaking on their opponents, Salford, Smith said: “I don’t think form goes out of the window but we have spoken about every game that we’ve played against Salford in the last few years, and they have been really tough ones. “They always show up and bring the best of them, especially starting well which they’ve been doing in games recently even though they maybe haven’t been getting some of he results.” He added: “If we just keep producing what we’re doing and getting our own things right, we can hopefully get a good win.” The game will be followed by an International break, putting a halt to the Betfred Super League for two weeks. Smith explained that this gives Wigan an opportunity to put in a big performance before the break in games: “We mentioned about emptying our tanks and giving 100% effort for the full 80-minutes. If we do that it’ll hopefully back up into a good performance which can lead us to getting the result that we want. You don’t want to be thinking too far ahead, but if we can finish on a high it’ll lead nicely into the break and you can know you’ve done your job well.” 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙞𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙 The duo responsible for the winning try in the #ChallengeCupFinal jointly picked up the OpenExchange Player of the Month Award for May, both with exactly 37% of the vote! On his performances this year, he said: “I feel I’m doing things right but there’s always things you can improve on. Getting the game time that I have has given me a bit of consistency of playing in the same team. I’ve just got to keep doing my job, getting the ball to the right people at the right times. He added: ‘Hopefully things can continue to come off and we can carry on getting some wins. I’m doing alright at the minute, but I know there’s still areas of my game to work on and I’ll definitely be doing my best to improve those.” The post Smith: Empty the tanks appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. 25. The RFL and Community Integrated Care today announce a long-term extension to the sport’s pioneering Social Care Partnership – as Community Integrated Care celebrates its fifth anniversary of working in Rugby League. A Ground Breaking Partnership Community Integrated Care is one of Britain’s biggest and most successful social care charities, supporting more than 3,000 people who have learning disabilities, autism, mental health concerns, dementia and complex care needs to lead the best life possible. Since 2016, the charity has pioneered many innovative programmes with the sport of Rugby League at a local and national level that promote the health, happiness and inclusion of people who access support, and help impact paid and family carers. This work was taken to new levels in 2018, when the Rugby Football League and Super League allied with the charity to became the first governing body and top flight league with a dedicated Social Care Partner. With a shared vision of using the power of Rugby League to change lives, this collaboration has formed many innovative programmes, and helped bring significant investment, resources and skills to support the sport’s disability inclusion efforts. Changing the lives of tens of thousands of people, creating unprecedented opportunities across communities, and helping to promote a more inclusive society, this is a truly groundbreaking partnership. This success has most prominently included the creation of the world-first Community Integrated Care Learning Disability Super League and the Rugby League World Cup 2021 Inclusive Volunteering programmes. The Community Integrated Care Learning Disability Super League has given more than 300 people who have learning disabilities or autism the chance to play for the clubs that they love, enjoying a specially accessible and adapted form of Rugby League. This programme was named as the ‘Best Model of Integrated Care’ by Skills for Care, the national body for training and innovation in social care. The Inclusive Volunteering Programme has supported more than 350 people to access live-changing mentoring, support and opportunities, through projects inspired by Rugby League and the RLWC2021 and opportunities to volunteer at major games. The project has already provided more than 4,500 hours of support to participants, enabling people to fulfil their greatest dreams and grow in independence. The programme was named as the “Best Community Scheme” at the 2021 Sports Business Awards and won the Sporting Chance honour at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards. Other innovations created by the partnership have included the creation of www.What-To-Do.co.uk, a website that offers free live accessible activities every day for people who access care and support, and a major campaign to help develop the activity skills of care workers during lockdown. At a local level, Community Integrated Care works directly with many of Rugby League’s charitable foundations and clubs. With programmes including accessible sports classes for people with profound learning disabilities, education and vocational programmes, social clubs, campaigns to promote inclusion, dementia cafes, and carer wellbeing programmes, this represents a uniquely diverse commitment to social impact through sport. Future plans include a major education project to promote inclusive attitudes in young people, new community projects to support people living with dementia, and the development of new sports and social opportunities for people who have learning disabilities and autism. Proud Partners John Hughes, Director of Partnerships and Communities at Community Integrated Care, says: “Our relationship with the RFL has changed countless lives and transformed the opportunities that exist for many disabled people in our communities. This long-term extension of our partnership demonstrates the shared commitment that both our charity and the sport has in extending this impact even further in the years ahead. “The RFL, and our club, foundation and Super League partners, have been incredible partners who deserve enormous credit for their vision and belief. Together, we have delivered an impact that is entirely unique in world sport. We are very excited by the difference that we will make together in the years ahead.” Ralph Rimmer CEO of the Rugby Football League, said: “We have been proud to develop such a close partnership with Community Integrated Care in recent years leading to the development of the Learning Disability Super League, so we are absolutely delighted to have extended that partnership on a long-term basis. “There could be no better example of the positive impact of sport in general, and Rugby League in particular – and this partnership extension means an impact on hundreds more lives, in parts of the country where times are especially tough. “The sport of Rugby League will be delighted to welcome Community Integrated Care and LDSL players to our Mid-Season Internationals this month, to Super League’s Magic Weekend in Newcastle in July, and of course to the Rugby League World Cup this autumn.” Clare Balding CBE, the President of the RFL, added: “This partnership is Rugby League at its best. That is why I was so delighted when Mark Adams of Community Integrated Care was presented with an RFL’s President’s Award in late 2020 to reflect the importance of the work which had been done in the development of the Learning Disability Super League, and especially through the Covid-19 pandemic – and I am equally pleased that the partnership is to continue.” The post RFL extend Social Care Partnership appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog.
